My friend who's a manager at a local EBGames told me he heard a rumor that they'd cut out the digital-out port from the new batch of GameCubes, rendering them unable to support component or progressive scan out. We opened one of the new Metroid Prime bundles, and sure as shit...GONE. This blows big time, those games look so much better with component cables and progressive scan enabled. Granted, anyone who cares that much about having one and playing it with those means probably already has one, but it's a real shame that Nintendo is being so fucking cheap. Bastards!

This has been the case for a while now, and lead to another GC price drop

Kind of a stupid move, but honestly probably not that many people will even notice. It does piss me off though.

Kinda one of those things that if people are into it enought they know they'll have to look for an early GCN otherwise people won't notice and it cuts cost...Oh well my gamecube is a launch one, but I don't have any tv that supports it.

i doubt the bulk of gamecube owners will notice (12 year olds). still a stupid move by nintendo and it just shows how behind the times they are on technology.

Well, the average gamer probably doesn't have an HDTV let alone the knowledge of what Component Output can do. S-Video has been more then enough for me. I notice a decent amount of improvement over Composite but S-Video over Component, that's debatable. Progressive is nice but not oh my god, I need to buy a $1,000 tv, 60 Component Cables to reallyt play my game. Maybe in a few years I may upgrade to an HD, but for now, I'm content.

I bought one of those Metroid Prime Bundles about a week ago. Cuz the box looked kewl, of course.

It's a platinum GC they give you too. Yes, the component output is gone.

Now, I want my original Platinum GC with the output.

You're lucky; I heard it was never connected up at all on the PAL 1's

did you know they made a modem for it they don't even use?
O wait, they're using it for the PSO expansion that came out a year ago in japan.
nintendo's been behind the technology curve ever since the gc came out
and some may argue they haven't innovated the handheld market with their
stagnant "we don't have to change because we're nintendo" philosophy.
I'm hoping this psp deal is putting a fire in their pants but that pretty much
puts another nail in the coffin I think.
the reality of things is, you can't fight with huge corporations now.
nintendo's big, but they can't compete with companies like microsoft that
can afford to throw money at the market until they feel they have a good share
or against sony who basically owns the lion's share of the industry.
enjoy them while they're still around.
people will be missing them like alot of people are missing SEGA.
the ghost SEGA is now isn't an inkling of what they used to be.
