Exactly HOW do you play as Iori and Kyo in MVS99?

Okay, this has come up, and lord knows I've looked. I went to Neo Encyclopedia (what a great website), to see just how to play as these guys. I need it spelled out for me.

It says that you must play as random characters using one of the following... then it rattles off a list of people. Then it says that again, but with a different list, to get Iori. So one to get Kyo and the other, Iori. Beat the game and you get a K and then an I on the title screen or something like that.

Now, do I have to use "random select" and hope that these characters come up? Do I just pick them myself? Must I beat the game on a certain level? Can someone spell out just how to get the K and I to show? I've got the codes after that, but I don't understand how to get those to come up.

I'm starting to like KOF99. I've hated it for years, finding it way too stiff in play control. I still find it stiff, but it's growing on me. Anyhow, little help? And again, this is for the MVS version. Thanks.

Well, I have the K.I on the title screen, but the codes don't seem to work. Hold start on the random box and then do the codes? Don't work. Help!

Perhaps there's an error in the codes you have. Kao Megura's (R.I.P.) KoF99 FAQ says:

[...]

- Once you return to the title screen, you'll notice that a <k> mark
has appeared at the bttom center of the screen if you fulfilled Kyo's
requirement (or an <i> mark for Iori, or a <k.i> mark if you fulfilled
both requirements).

- Anyways, once you have the appropriate mark, start a new game, and
move to the Roulette. Hold Start, then enter the following code:

For Kyo: Press left, right, up, left, down, right.
For Iori: Press right, left, up, right, down, left.

- The corresponding character will become playable the moment you press
in the last direction (the little sun or moon box will simply change
to the portrait of Kyo or Iori with no fanfare or anything).

I can't help you with the MVS issue, but just wondering what KOF's you're use to playing where 99 feels stiff. I just got it for AES 2 days ago and I'm loving it. The smooth controls were one of the first things I noticed while playing it.

Just about any of them. I've been playing KOF since 95, I've owned every single one on AES up to 2k2, and I've got about half them at the moment on MVS. I've played them a ton, and 99 just feels stiff compared. For instance, 97 is way too loose, to me. Too many shortcuts to do moves. 99 you have to be very strict on the moves, and combos don't seem to flow as well when you use things such as jabs and light kicks. Compare light punches in 98 to 99. Heavy D can do about 7 hits with a light kick. You can't really get anything like that off in 99. Also, the strikers take a looong time to come out compared to say, 2K where you can use them while attacking and what not. In 99, you have to hold still. They're pretty useless compared to 2k.

That's what I mean. However, I'm getting used to the heavy feel. That's the best way I can describe it: the characters feel weighty. Not slugish, but just heavy.
