I know we have quite a few dog lovers on the site so I thought I’d see if I could get some feedback. One of my dogs has some sort of intestinal worms, my guess is ring worms or tape worms. She has passed a few in her stool (one I’ve collected for the vet in the morning). I know these types of worms are very contagious, so my main concern is, should I be worried about my other dog. He doesn’t have any of the symptoms like she does, i.e. diarrhea, loss of appetite, etc, but she didn’t really start getting sick until this weekend. And finally… what should I look to spend on treatment… the vet here is good, but I sometimes feel I am being over charged… I am just looking to see what some of you may have paid.

Oh and she is on Heartguard, I thought that was supposed to prevent a lot of these worms (I know she is heart worm free, but I thought ring worms and etc were also covered under Heartguard). Anyone know if there is a better preventative for her to be on?

Thanks all,

-Nick

My parent's dog had poopy worms at one point. He's also on Heartguard. I think all that does is protect them from heart worms, not any other worm. None of the other worms will kill a dog like heart worms can (of course, they can still die from intestinal worms, but not as easily, plus I think once they have heartworms all you can do is control them, not get rid of them like you can poopy worms).

What did they pay? Not sure, but I don't think it was a 'whole lot.'

Most of the time worms come from your dogs doing something stupid, like drinking out of stagnant water outside or something. That's how our dog got teh worms.

I would collect a sample from the other dog as well and have them test for the worms there. Maybe get 2 sets of medication, one for each, just in case? If the other dog doesn't have worms, I doubt giving them the worm medication will cause any harm.

The only way a dog can give another dog worms is if they eat their poop (spanky loves poop) My weimerainer had worms and the vet gave him some chalk looking stuff then I had to go back in 2 weeks for another dose . I slack on taking the dogs to the vet but not with worms . After they get treated they will crap ramen noodes for a couple days . Unless they eat crap they don't really spread it .

edit heart worm is spread my mosquito and is different than poop worms

Take a sample of her stool to the Vet ASAP.

Also clean up any of the other messes she does so it doesn't get eaten by any other animals, which is how it can be spread to other animals.

And I believe Heartguard is for Heartworm Disease, Roundworms, and Hookworms only... so it wouldn't have any effect on Tape or Ring worms.

Thanks everyone, yeah she is going to the vet in the morning, I've got a worm to bring in, but she is pooping chocolate milk at this point... so it is futile to try and collect some. If I can get Watson to poop tonight I'll bring that in as well so it can be tested. The drinking stagnent water thing really got to me. We've had a lot of rain recently, and a lot of standing water... I bet that's what happened. Anyway, I feel bad for her, she's pooping moose every couple hours... going to get her on meds in the morning. Thanks again for all the feedback.

my stupid family got 5 cats now and those little fuckers always get worms in their shit. guess who has to get the medicince gee i wonder. btw the stuff you can get at the stores does shit for worms. one time they got this bottle that was like $15 and it only had 4 pills in it. so i force the pills in their fucking mouth and ok no worms for like 2 months. oh shit here come the worms again after 2 months so this time they get these cheap pills like 20 pills for $5 oh great so i have to force like 10 pills down this fat ass cat we have that is kind of small but he weighs 20 pounds of lard in him! fat ass cat! so i give all these pills down the throat of these stupid cats and it seemed to reduce the worms now i just have to see if they go away again.

5 cats and none go outside they are locked in the house i wonder how they get worms. maybe from eating flies? sometimes they leave meat to thaw out in the sink all day and sometimes a cat will take a bite of the raw meat but they eat only like 1 bite out of it will this give them worms?

damn sometimes the worms are so bad the whole couch turns white because dead worms fall out of all their asses sometimes live worms too. this pisses me off so much that i just spray them with water out of a spray gun into their face and mouth and eye.

fillthy little urchin cats.

Uh, well in the old days on farms they would mix gunpowder into the dog's food to take care of any worms....

Something that works on a similar principle (diotomaceous earth) can be used in the same way....and that might be the the white powder Fats is talking about...then again it might not be....check into it...

Hope your dog gets better.
