Madden 2005 by far the better game. How can I say that? Well I've put in over 1000 hours of play time in Madden 2005 since I was a tester at EA Tiburon. Don't believe me? In the credits look for Evan Nikolich. Still don't believe me? This is the same Evan Nikolich who finished 2nd in the recent FAQ contest. ESPN is a solid football game and is a great catch for $20, but gameplay wise Madden 2005 just owns it in every category.

The hit stick is the biggest new feature, but if you go deeper there are a ton of new defensive audibles, you are able to go into the down with one defense and then adjust on the fly to how you see fit. Really think they are gonna run, call coverage audible, then playmaker to a blitz to blitz your secondary. Feeling that the QB might bootleg on you, select that MLB and hit right on the playmaker to put him into a spy, There are a ton of options a defense.

Also on defense, the secondary is much approved. If the safeties are in a zone, they will come over the top to help out the CBs that are in man. There is the new JESUS SWAT as we called it a work where the CBs get mad ups, which counters the JETPACKING recievers :p

On offense, we've added the new formation shift. This allows to change formations on the fly. Feel like your TE got killer speed, but you're in a Big I formation, formation shift to an I Twins to get that TE outside to play the slot reciever.

The gameplay in Madden 2005 is so deep that even after a 1000 hours of play I am finding new ways to do stuff. Trust me folks, Madden 2005 is the better buy this year. ESPN kicked our asses with VIP and Presentation, Madden 2005 is the deepest and the most realistic football game there is.

All this sums up...

How does it compare to ESPN 2k5?

Yeah, I bought it.

IMO ESPN owns it. The hit stick is good, but the new maximum tackling system in ESPN is much better. It also really gives the running game in ESPN an edge, as I feel like I am in much more control of the play. This on top of the quarterback evade system, maximum passing, and full position control much like a good version of last years play maker controls really has left my Madden very lonely. I am also a very big fan of the Franchise in this years ESPN. I love all of the micromanagement. It really draws me into the game. I thought last years Madden might have slightly edged out the ESPN series, but this year it is no contest for me. ESPN is a much more cohesive and tight game than Madden this year. All that and it is only $20.

Football games would be a lot better if they didn't suck.

With that said, ESPN > Madden.

Hockey > Football.

ESPN: Best looking football game ever on Xbox.

The announcing is pretty fair on both. I am a sportcenter baby, so I perfer the ESPN talent, and Chris Berman just rocks...

WHAT?! Have you actually PLAYED Madden? Madden 2005 is SO much tighter than ESPN. ESPN gameplay is so shoddy.

ESPN NFL2k5 > Madden.

Don't forget, Visual Concepts were the REAL Madden developers in the first place.
Their love for the game just oozes out of every pore.

One of the things that's a major hang-up for me with the Madden series is the god-awful character models. They all look like squatty fucking fat 3D models of the ancient 16-bit Madden sprites. I'm sorry, but to represent the game realistically, you need the very distinct, different body types....from the tall, lean receivers to the thick-as a brick halfbacks to the big thundering herds of linemen. The faces in Madden 2005 still look like fucking zombies.

EA Trax can suck my balls too.

$50 for any sports game with such minor-ass improvements is a fucking rip-off.
Madden is just a hollow-fucking brand that stopped improving years ago.

Visual Concepts > EA. Especially in hoops.

hahahahahahahahahahhahahaahahahaahahahahaaaa

funny post man.

edit: anyone who thinks espn is better is on crack or recovering from being a crack addict.

you know why espn is only 20 bucks? because it's not even a finished game. if you get a clipping penalty on a 20 yard run, it becomes a 35 yard penalty from the original line of scrimmage!? nice work on that one.

almost every espn game i've played no matter what the sport, has some stupid ass glitches like that.

espn wins in presentation and that's about it.

and yea loopz, thank god for custom soundtracks on madden...

Madden fanboy much? I couldn't disagree with you more. Like I said before last years Madden was better than ESPN, but this year the improvements to the running, catching, and tackling make ESPN a much more enjoyable experience. Madden just seems like a chore to play, whereas I can't wait to get home so I can go check out how my guys stats have increased after the training regimen I've put them on. ESPN>Madden IMO.

Well yeah I guess I am a fanboy, but I've invested alot of time in Madden and I've invested time in to ESPN and Madden by far the superior game when it comes to gameplay. Presentation wise, we dropped the ball on that one. Still as a memeber of the Madden team, I am quite proud with what kind of game we produced.

You say things so matter of factly. I don't see how you think for a second that Madden plays better then ESPN, and several people agree with me. So, how is it a fact that Madden plays better? You should probably state that it plays better to you, which could be caused by the fact that you've played Madden so long that feels natural to you. Also, as a beta tester, and the fact that you state that "we" put out a good game I don't think that your opinion is really fair in this thread, as you have a vested interest in Madden...

This is the videogame nerd equivalent of the scene from Clerks where the Chewlies gum rep hangs out at the counter and warns strangers about the dangers of smoking, and hands 'em a pack of Chewlies gum instead.

It must be a bitch cranking out a new Madden every year, having to update the rosters and shit.

Seriously, those games could be released as el cheapo expansions every year for $20. But I guess the masses are easily duped, and since Madden '04 sold upwards of 5 million copies last year, the market is there. There's a lot of dumb folks.

What makes them dumb? The fact that they're buying a game they like, even if it is not much more than updated rosters? (and for xbox, it's a huge upgrade considering you can play on live now)

I'm cool with ya loopz, but what a stupid post. The espn fanboys are just as retarded as the madden ones.

butta, here's what I think makes 'em dumb (and you're obviously an exception to this)...

Most folks will simply dip into their pocket and shell out $50 for this shit, no questions asked. The Madden brand name is so ingrained that people won't even give a solid alternative like NFL2K5 at less than half a price even so much as a look. And that's DUMB.

If you've tried both, and honestly consider M'05 the superior game, then by all means, go out and spend $50 on the game you want and enjoy it.

Yes, you can make the case that every year, any company that puts out a sports title is obviously pimping a product with very little that's new...and this is why I respect how ESPN/Sega is going so low on price this year...they are challenging the price structure of these games, which is something that someone has needed to do for a very long time.

Loopz, I like the Clerks reference, but your are showing much of an ignorant shit you are. Just roster updates?! Madden 2005 was completely overhauled. New textures, new animations, new plays, significantly improved AI on the All-Pro and All-Madden levels, a realistic run game, a more realistic passing game, the array of defensive audibles, the new formantion shifts and hot routes on offensive, the hit stick, and oh I almost forgot it cause its so minor: roster updates.

There was alot more work put into Madden this year than you think. ESPN is loaded with bugs and exploits and DOES NOT play like real football. Of course Loopz have you ever actually played the fine game of football? Do you know what it is like? Probably not. Just stick to your arm chair quarterback status and play ESPN for its glitz and glamour VIP mode and garbage. Fans who understand how football is suppose to be played will go to Madden.

One last tid bit.

ESPN 2k4 sales: 350,000 units
Madden 2004 sales: 5,000,000 units

I think these sales numbers will probably repeat again. Mainly because Madden 2005 is the superior product.

Gee. Someone who works for EA plugging an EA game. Yes, I trust you.

Matt

PS: paying $20 for updated rosters > paying $50 for updated rosters.
