Hey, Fatal Fury Fan #2 and I would like our fellow members to point out to us all the Texan members you guys know of. I have a list I compiled that was kinda Houston-centered but this should help. I got this list both by remembering people in Texas and searching the old forums' members' profiles for "Tx" and "Texas".
I'm gonna paste my file's contents below. Please post people that you know of that aren't on this list!

Just a note: If anyone in Houston is trying to plan a meetup, let me know and I'll help out however I can. If anyone is planning a Texas-wide meetup (but not in Houston), yet again, I'll help however I can.
I have a supergun+MVS setup I can bring anywhere, and other consoles of course.

I just thought I'd let you know, we are going to organize a New Orleans Gathering some time next month which I am hosting with the New Orleans members on this board when I show up in town some time next month. If you are willing to make it, let me know now as we are still going to set up a day for it. Preferably send me a pm and when I am in town I will get in touch with everybody who is going to show up for the best day in which everybody can make it; most likely a Saturday. Pass this along to people who may be interested from Texas. Also if you are going try to bring some gear as everybody will bring some stuff whether it be systems, games, or whatever. Laterz.

Heh, Harlingen? I'm originally from outside of Rio Hondo, you know that little tiny town outside of Rio Hondo, "La Tina"? Yep, I'm from the 2nd brick house there. =)
Is Funworld still barely alive there? Last I saw it, it was in the old Sun Valley Mall, and had like 8 games, 9 of which were broken, oh, and a pool table.
It's a small world afterall.........
I was originally from Raymondville "Gateway to the Valley"......its like the first town you pass entering the Rio Grand Valley. Living there you would need to go to Harlinge, McAllen etc if you wanted a MALL or Movies, games, etc.
I used to chill at Fun World when it was next to that theatre. They used to keep up with the latest neo games (this was back in early 90's).
good times.

Fun World, or "Lucky Spin" or whatever it's called, is still barely alive in Sun Valley Mall. Has like two pool tables and maybe 15-20 games. I was actually going there for a while to play DDRMAX2 (it was set at 2 tokens for 5 songs), but they got rid of it so now I have no reason to go there.
I used to chill at Fun World when it was next to that theatre. They used to keep up with the latest neo games (this was back in early 90's).
Hell yeah! I used to go there with my dad every Saturday back when the place was still called Atlantis, then back in 1992 it was turned into Fun World and got a shitload of extra games. That was such a fun time, especially since in the coming weeks they got those huge 50-inch screen games and 6-player X-Men. Those were truly the golden days of Fun World. Too bad as time went on they took out more and more games, added more and more pool tables, and then took out more "normal" games for redemption games... I could see how it gradually deteriorated....
yup, Funworld was THE arcade man. No broken games, several MVS cabs, the newest Street Fighter 2 hacks, Mortal Kombat hacks, everything. Jerry (owner) really had it goin on for a long time.
I doubt you'll remember seeing this, but if you ever played Killer Instinct at Funworld, or JollyTime (in brownsville) my initials were "GOD". My friend Rick, myself, and two other guys, Harvey, and Zeke were like the best KI players there for a while.
Dude I remember Zeke and Harvey! Zeke taught me how to do the Handcuffs and Magic Throw on SF2 World Warrior... good times.
I'm afraid that I never got to go to any Brownsville arcades until I was old enough to drive :P I played at #1 Fun a lot when X-Men vs. Street Fighter and Street Fighter 3: New Generation were big.
And if you guys don't remember who I was... I was the little white kid that was at Fun World pretty much every fucking Saturday. And I played everything. Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, Killer Instinct, Art of Fighting, Samurai Shodown, you name it... I'm sure I saw you guys at some point.
God damn I miss that place. I was barely ever going there at all once the place had degraded to shit, then one day I decide to stop by and I see the message posted that they had moved to Sun Valley Mall... this knot just tied up in my stomach, it was weird... I was sad to see the building I'd spent so much time in as a kid, closed down.... so many memories attached.
One of my greatest memories of Fun World was when they lowered the price on their two Mortal Kombat 1 machines to one token to continue. EVERYONE was playing, there was so much competition that day. I ended up getting a 45-game win streak, and the next week I got a 56 win streak. I was so proud of those two scores, they stayed up there until the machine left.
Miraculously, the Tilt at Valle Vista Mall is still alive, although the only people that go there regularly are MvC2 players. I remember when the place was called the Gold Mine and it was so dark, hahaha. Plus it used those fucking weird-ass tokens that were impossible to get in the slot unless you were super-precise. They were the first place in Harlingen to get Street Fighter II...

Heh, i remember a little hottie working there after they got the Stuffed Animal/ Ticket Price/ Hotdog/refreshment booth thingie....lol
I dont remember her name but I DO remember that ass...... :shame:
Goldmine was the spot I first saw Streetfighter 2. The beginning of my love for fighting games. I used to play UN Squadron at Goldmine a lot.
Mr. Gattis (on Ed Carey drive - i think its gone now but not sure) was the first place I saw Fatal Fury. Raidens stage blew me away and i knew I had to have a neo.
Atlantis/Fun World basically was a testing place for my next Neo-Geo game. If i liked what I played, id get it.
When Samurai Shodown first appeared there, my friend and i took a Video camera and recorded ourselves playing it just so we can have something to watch when we got home to remember it. My Neo_Addiction got to the point I was making Tapes (yes......cassettes) of game music like Kof94, fatal fury, Samurai Shodown.........
Ahh man the good Ol dayz.

Nice to see this thread sparking this kinda stuff :). No real coincidence kinda stories here except that there was this one time where myself and Fatal Fury Fan #2 were at the Stargate (this was when I first met him) and we ran into Chris from SNK-Capcom (DILLIGAF on these boards) and we had no idea he'd be there and we were all freaked that someone from N-G showed up on the same day as the meetup and didn't even know it was happening.

hahaha, Rio Grande Valley hijacking this thread! Wooooooo!!
Hmm.. the only 'white kid' i can recall was a guy that was prolly about 5'9", and always wore a cap.. Not sure if the cap was red and white, but I think I remember that guy? might have been you.
I'm not even that tall now, so it probably wasn't me... although I did always wear a cap (not sure which one I was wearing back then though)... so probably not. Oh well.
Creasey's Bowling used to have a decent number of Neo-Geo games at one point. Hell, that was the first place I played Fatal Fury. I remember some kid trying to tell me that it was Street Fighter 3. Ahahahaha....
I never did go to Gatti's much, but I do remember when they had Fatal Fury and SF2 at least... the sticks on the SF2 were great, I think it was there that I learned how to do Zangief's SPD correctly. (boy, don't you miss the days when doing special moves was a huge deal? I felt so jubliant when I could finally consistently Dragon Punch.)
Oh, and let's not forget the fact that the Gold Mine was the first place to get a Neo-Geo too. And they had it for quite a while too, although around.... I dunno, 1996 or 1997, they got rid of all the games in the other slots and had nothing but Samurai Shodown 4 in it. It looked strange. Then a couple years later it was gone. I wish I could've gotten a chance to buy it off them or something. :( (although they probably charged too much for it...)

Yeah i think your right, Goldmine had the old-old school games on that 4 slot (baseball stars, superspy, magician lord and ninja combat!!)
I remember the owner of the pizza place in the mall always hogged it up to play Baseball stars (bastard). I remember one time I told him "dont you have some pizzas to make!?"........
thats when i discovered he owned the place cuz he replied "i own it, i dont have to make any pizzas!"

DAMN it's good to know someone is in Corpus! *I'm down there like every other month or so with my wife just because we like the city/beachside so much. And Corpus will always have my love simply because it's where I first played a NEO:GEO 2-Slot back in the summer of 1990 at Sunset Mall {might have been Padre Staples, which ever had teh TILT upstairs in it}. It was there I went to the hell again in NAM-1975 and became "The Super Spy".
*Other notable FIRSTS for gaming = IKARI III: The Rescue {Wal-Mart} Mechanized Attack {TILT}.
...ahh great memories indeed. Much love for Corpus!

It's changed a bit. This is all secondhand info as I've never been myself. He took out some candy cabs and put in some consoles. You pay at the door for a certain amount of hours (or all day) kinda like a cyber cafe. I have no idea what all's there and what's not as I haven't been since the reonvation. I'll say though that he has two dedicated 6-slots at the least (he said he wouldn't get rid of the Neo uprights). They have, to name a few, KOF 97, 98, 2K2 and 2K3, Last Blade 2, Samurai Shodown 2, 4 and 5, and some other stuff...

I don't have that much Neo stuff. Outside of the PS1 port of KOF'99, which I've pwned many times, I mostly travel to the arcades. Katy Mills mall has a SVC cabinet which I play at every once in awhile, and there's this place in Webster that has Real Bout Fatal Fury and Metal Slug 3, but that's about it. When I go to my dad's cousin's ranch place in Brady though I get to play Metal Slug 2 and Puzzle Bobble on their MVS.... Our Wal-Mart has an Atomiswave too, if that counts. I really need to get a Supergun or something. Haven't been to the Stargate yet, but I've heard good things... I'll probably go a lot once I get my liscense.

Actually, I agree with FFF2, I would love to find out where and how you guys got cabs. I'm in the process of finding one now, and I'm having a hell of a time finding a good price.
I found a decent Candy 29inch cab, (with Stree Fighter EX2) for $350, but its in California, so the shipping might be like $200.. thats kinda expensive.
Anyone here getting rid of one? :)

What days is it on, and can you buy a ticket for the event at the door? I'm tied up until Sunday, but if it's going on on Sunday, it's probable I might show up. Of course who's going to be there... don't make any sense to go {and I generally avoid Cons} if there's no real reason too, as most have freckin' draconian laws about this and that, no fan subs etc, etc.... while pasty faggots and others run around in Cosplay just continuing the misconception that everyone into Japanimation is a nutcase.

Also, while college is in session I'm located in Richardson (near Dallas). My friend Todd has been to The Anime Store, but I haven't. I wanna play the beatmania IIDX 8th style they have there! (8th is such a fun style anyway)
oh the anime store is closed down. the owner just has an online store now called atsui-anime.com.

Well, next weekend is Anime Matsuri in Houston and the Texas Showdown is going on in the con. Who's going?

I've never heard of those events. Are they like anime conventions?
Maury V.
04-23-2007, 10:12 AM
Yeah, Anime Matsuri is a convention that's being held in Houston this upcoming weekend (April 27th - 29th). It's going to be at the George R. Brown Convention center and it's going to be HUGE! As for the Texas Showdown, that's an annual tournament that is also held in Houston. What's different about it this year is that it's taking place the same time Anime Matsuri is being held so I'm looking forward to this.

So Maury do you go to AM
I was thinking about heading out there for one day just to see how it turned out But never got around to it. I heard the Showdown was OK but did not see how many people where playing in it. but the rest had some issues. I think they were more concerned about turing a profit then having a convention :)

Oh my gaa, this con has SO many problems! The showdown was garbage, plain and simple. You had teams of three playing against one another; there was no one on one for some reason. In the finals, Guilty Gear XX Accent Core, Tekken 5: DR, and Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike was played. The Japanese killed us 3-0 and it was embarrassing to look at. To give us the benefit of the doubt, we're used to playing on the pad instead of the stick which was probably our weakness. The Japanese play these games on the sticks almost every damn day while we're pad people.
As for the convention, it was more of a profit thing. Security were being a bunch of bitches (even to the guests), people had to wait in line for 3 hours to get their passes, and it was just unorganized. I still had fun out there meeting new people and doing things but other than that, it was meh. I give it a 3 out of 5. I'll have more of this on my show later this week.

to bad,
That is what I read. You know I talked with Chris (owned stargate) several times when he popped up at Oni-Con about the reason I do the Gaming. how if i just did a plain gaming convention I would not get the turn out to afford the venue. I think he must have got together with john (owner of PZ) and pitched the idea to do anime matsuri. Problem is they did this trying to make it a big Gaming convention but relaying on the anime fan base to pay for the Venue. Of course in doing this they did not give enough for the anime fans to do since they are mostly gamers. a lot of the hard core gamers dislike anime fans so they did not show up for a tournaments. Also the fact they could not get EVO South. So they ended up putting on a not so good event for both. The had the equipment to do a great gaming show.
Of coure I am an odd one since I am a gaming/anime fan I guess. I like heading the gaming room at our con.
It is going to be even harder for them next year. Even with the people that came for the torunaments they lost money on paying the pots since from what I hear the only had at most 32 teams for each tournament. That is if they pay out the prizes.
Anyway though since this is a Texas thread. I hope you can make it out Oct 19-21 for Oni-con. if you want I will staff you and you can help with my room setup and get a free weekend pass. My job is requiring more out of me and this may end up being the last one I can really work on hard core. However this year I got a full room and have some great announcements coming. Please don't visit the website though, it looks like CaCa right now until we get the new one up and running ;)

Bruno! Thanks for the offer but truth be told, I dunno if I'll be able to take on that. Thing is, if I do go to Oni-con, I might have to help out my friend with his store and I may show up on Saturday (i'll most likely have to work that Friday). I thank you for the offer, I really appreciate it, that I do! We'll have to see how things go for me in the long run, assuming school and/or work doesn't keep me behind.
Truthfully for Anime Matsuri itself, after talking to my friends about it this week, I have to give the convention itself a 2 out of 5 simply because of horrid planning, horrid security, and just a bad mix of gaming with Japanese animation. Hell, the guests and artists didn't even like the convention! The guys running it didn't feed their guests! The Japanese guests that were in the finals had a horrible time simply because of all the Japanophiles that were surrounding them. Saturday was REAL BAD for them because while they were practicing for the finals, the geeks were surrounding them and asking them all sorts of questions and such and just annoying the hell out of them. I met up with one of the finalists (who is an excellent Heihachi player) and he was cool as hell! I just felt sorry that he had to deal with so much hell from the ignorant (and downright stupid) Americans.
Speaking of the Japanophiles, they were cheering for Japan during the finals which didn't help any of the American players. I interviewed one of the players and he said that he couldn't play well because of the constant Japan cheering. Me and a few others were cheering for the U.S. but it wasn't enough.
My last convention may be Anime Fest in Fort Worth Labor day weekend but we'll see how things go from here on out.
Peace and love!

anyway there is also a superauction in Dallas this weekend I am heading out to, they rarely have candies but sometimes the do pop up.

I guess I should post this here. Planet Zero in Houston is considering getting a beatmania IIDX 15: DJ TROOPERS cabinet. Check out the thread here: http://www.mashharder.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2415
If you'd play it, then please register there and say you would. This will be one of two beatmania IIDX cabinets in all of Texas (the other being the 8th Style in San Antonio), and this is the newest one.

Hmm... I seem to remember an arcade in the Irving Mall in Irving that had some beatmania arcade machine for sale at least up to two or three years ago. They were asking something like $20,000 if I remember right. I don't remember what beatmania it was either.
I don't know if the arcade still exists, but it did at least up until last year I know for a fact. I know this because one of my former room mate's sister's boyfriend who used to visit was/is a huge 2d fighters fan and knew the guy who runs the place.
I will try to recall, as best as possible from memory, what they had. They had at least ten 4-slot Japanese candy cab style Neo Geo machines all with different games, the newest import ddr machine at the time, at least two HUGE awesome looking and sounding sit down projection arcades running some 2-d fighters that I can't seem to recall, and various other machines. When I went with my friends there were a bunch of guys playing one of the projection arcades. It was an awesome experience to see such a lively arcade in 2005 although I don't know about it now.
Oh and you can add me to the list DanAdamKOF. Kind of pointless though as you already know me....

Welcome, I think you'll find there are quite a few dedicated Neo and arcade game fans here.
Our arcade unfortunately closed down recently, but we've relocated the important games to Tek Republik, a LAN center which is on the corner of Burnet and North Loop. I have a 4-slot Neo there (American style/P360s) with Bust-A-Move, Magical Drop 3, Crossed Swords, and KOF2K2. If things go as planned, I should be getting a 2nd Neo cab as well. I'll at least be adding KOF98, Garou, and Twinkle Star Sprites.

Neither did I, we're going to see them again in Vegas because their tour will be there when we are on vacation. The opening band was ok, but I thought the song about his mother's mashed potatoes was terrible. It killed me. I wasn't in the pit though, I'm more for hanging back and just dancing a jig if the feeling takes me. It was certainly the most diverse concert crowd I've ever seen.

I'm the proprietor of the arcade machines only. I currently have a co-location agreement with the owner of Tek Republik to operate the machines there. I'm in the process of looking for a venue for an arcade only, where we'll be able to have more control over the environment along with a lot more games.

Well, I know it wasn't Swiss Land but you were definately leaving Corpus or something.
Switzerland is the most beautiful place I've ever been. I can't wait to go back again one day.
I played some A2 while I was there, seemed fine. Well, til some guy went against me and totally killed me with this awesome insane custom combo. Man, all I wanted to do was scrub against the CPU!
98 is broken?! That ain't right. That needs to be fixed.
hahaha thats always my fear when i go up there.
you must beware of the capcom freaks that go there :p
well it was the last time i was up there and i know, it isn't right! :crying:

I know! My first time at Planet Zero was during Oni-con last year and I was just minding my business on Third Strike when this guy came on and beat the shit out of me with Yun. I just wanted to play and he got he furious when he not only interrupted me but embarrassed me with his game play. It irritates me when losers like him take the fun out of playing the game and taking it way too far with knowing EVERY parry.

HEY HOUSTON MEMBERS.
I'll be at Planet Zero tonight, 10pm-closing. Look for me, I'll be wearing dark blue shorts and a white T-shirt with a hand of cards on the back. Hopefully they'll let me set up beatmania IIDX like I did before...
I might go Saturday night too.

I'm going to be in Houston for Anime Matsuri. Look for me and my cameraman if you're going! :mr_t:
Edit: Oh yeah, Matsuri is this weekend (March 21st - 23rd) and i'll be playing the HELL out of the games. Hopefully the Showdown Championships will be better than last year because those otaku annoyed the HELL out of me!

Here comes yet another anime con for me to work! A-kon is making it's 19th return to the metroplex May 30th-June 1st. I don't know what my work schedule will be like, assuming I get the job. As usual, i'll be walking around with a camera filming the show so look for me if you get the chance.
