You have an HP. Most HP's run with some amount of shared video ram. This lowers the amout of ram displayed by windows.

OK I installed the 512x2 in my PC and now I have a spare 256 stick of ram . I have an old compaq that I've been playing with and got running I thought to myself I should stick this spare ram in there . Well the compaq does not power up anymore even when I put the old ram back in . More important would the ram stick still be good or did I break that too . I'm not really worried about the garbage PC I'm more concerened if the ram stick should still be OK to stick in my sisters PC (a newer E machine)?

Depends on how old your compaq is. Your HP is a 2.5Ghz P4 which means it has a 533Mhz FSB so you're using PC2700 RAM. If the compaq didn't have DDR memory and you stuck a DDR DIMM in there then that would be bad. I'd be surprized if it fried the mobo, as that would be highly unlikely, but I guess it could happen.

Will the machine even POST with the old RAM re-installed?

The old PC turns on you can hear the harddrive boot up and nothing happens blank screen . Again its a garbage PC I got running for porn surfing the net . I'm more worried that I pooped out the ram stick.

edit: will not work even with old ram

The short answer is that your computer is using a motherboard with an embedded GPU. So it's co-opting some of the system ram for exclusive use by the graphics chipset because it doesn't have any dedicated video ram like a proper PCI or AGP video card would.

so you went up to fry's today?

what kinda ram did you get? kingston?
They had a 512 x2 pack of kingston for 120.00. DDR ram I guess . To order ram its like a deli counter you wait for someone to take your order then you get a ticket and stuff. I think I"m going back to check out video cards , I wanted to get the ram done before I started to check out cards .
R.I.P compaq :emb:

eh, don't worry about it too much. Part of the RAM is outsourced to other parts of the OS so the only Available RAM is 0.99 GB.
