You can find Giant Robo up for sale over at Rightstuf.

There are 2 versions:

DVD only
and
DVD With a Model

The price for the DVD only is MSRP $24.95 and the special one is $74.99 MSRP. :eek:

I ordered... the $74.95 one. It's Giant Robo, so the model's gotta be cool, right?

It's set to be put on 4 discs total, which includes the show, PLUS the Gin-rei specials.

Anyone else buying this series?

Giant Robo is the best anime, ever! Is this just the first disc or the whole series?

I might get it, because I said I would 7 or so years ago when I actually wanted it. No model, though. Media Blasters has nuts for including a $50 extra LE type thing. I'm curious what kind of business they'll end up doing with that.

I'd rather see a U.F.O. ROBOT GRENDIZER complete box set myself, but I liked Giant Robo enough I'll give it another go.

Like I said in my first post, it's a 4 disc collection, though I didn't specify that this is the FIRST DISC only.

Sure they have balls throwing in a $50 extra and who is the market for it? Dumb asses like me, that's who.

Hate to tell you, but that probably won't happen.

I asked at ADV's panel at Otakon if they thought about picking up Mazinger Z TV. The answer was 'Ah, Mazinger Z... or better known as Tranzor Z in the US. That's where the problem lies. The show has already been licensed and getting the license for a DVD release is near impossible. We may have a way around that now with the Anime Network...'

Well, UFO Robot Grendizer, if I remember correctly, was aired in the Force Five block (never saw it myself). This would likely put Grendizer in the same position as Mazinger in terms of a legit US release... highly fucking unlikely.

Ugggh... well it looks like it's back to foraging through the GDVD market then. This is the shit I'm talking about you know. Fuckin' companies who won't go the extra mile to secure the rights to something just because the average fuck off won't buy it, but then the same companies all merge together to put down the GDVDs out there generally projecting from Hong Kong. Let's see now, the films that need to be brought stateside "Complete" on DVD.

Fang of the Sun DOUGRAM {75 Episode 1981 TV series}
Space Pirate Captain Harlock {42 Episode 1978 TV series}
Queen Milliennia {??? Episode 1980 TV series}
U.F.O. ROBOT GRENDIZER {1978 TV series ran three seasons}
Legends of the Galactic Heroes {Movies, OVAs "ALL OF IT!"}
A.T. VOTOMS: "Roots of Ambition" {60 Minute OVA}
A.T. VOTOMS: "Unknown Red Shoulder" {60 Minute OVA}
A.T. VOTOMS: "Battle of Heterogeneious Species" {60 Minute OVA}
A.T. VOTOMS: "The Heretic Saint" {1994 5-Part OVA Conclusion to '83 TV series}
Panzer World Galient {What Dunbine stole from this series}
Machine Walker XABUNGLE
HOKUTO NO KEN {The Complete mothefuckin' series all 185 eps or whatever!}

...but do we see these titles and more. NOPE! It just pisses me off having to settle for GDVD, or having to watch some fansub on the computer in a file that I cannot throw into my DVD player providing I can find something at all. **It's this stress and dissapointment that more or less forced me out of the Japanimation fandom.

The problem isn't that ADV isn't willing to go the extra mile, it's that it's extremely difficult for them to figure out who owns the rights to the shows in the US.

The way the ADV reps put it, they actually stated 'we'd love to release it, as we are all giant robot fans, but with the license being tied up by another company, it's not always possible' or something like that anyway.

The way it sounded, it sounded like the 70s Super Robot stuff is something they hope to pursue, once the Anime Channel comes into it's own a little more, and assuming they have ways around the licensing dilemma.

what sucks is the companies that do own the US rights of some of these shows aren't even doing ANYTHING with these old shows.

Then we'd end up not getting the 92 episode Mazinger Z, we'd end up getting Tranzor Z clocking in at ~62-66 episodes, complete with name changes and censorship! No thanks. I'd rather it be done right than done half assed. Now if someone wanted to out out Mazinger Z, but also include Tranzor Z, that's fine by me.

Don't forget that Tranzor Z spliced together scenes of both Mazinger Z and Great Mazinger into the same episodes for absolutely no reason, which made it even more of a mess. I have to admit, I like some of the corny dialogue in that show, though.

While I'd really love to have the original Star Warrior BISMARK TV series on DVD with Eng Subs in Japanese language, I hear you... because it's a damn shame World Productions won't release Sabre Rider & The Star Sheriffs on DVD, and that someone won't release Thunderbirds 2086, which while I know was Techno Voyager in Japan, it was obviously a rip off of Gerry Anderson's THUNDERBIRDS that sadly is being bastardized with Bill Paxton as we speak. Yes, there are a number of shows I'd like to see that some companies already have the rights to.

Oh fuck me. Well, I had a faint hope of possibly seeing at least Great Mazinger make it to US DVD, but since the fucks who had Mazinger Z obviously also had Great, as they wouldn't be using footage from it otherwise, I think that hope has been shit all over.

Oh well, subless R2s, here I come! (Actually, I already have the subless R2s of the first Mazinger Z box, with box 2 coming this month... hoping Dash no Chris/Hoteiya LV can source the Great box... then Grendizer, here I come!)
