Hello everyone!

I'm going to bore you with my recent experience: I finally got a Neo Geo CD.

I have always wanted to buy one. But procrastrination extinguished my will. And then, I found one in mint, mint, mint -save for some dust- condition in a video-games shop. It looks like brand new, sold to me for an unreal $220, along with the original power adaptor, SNK gamepad -so horrible when playing fighting games, in my opinion...- and KOF 99 Evolution.

Well, I must say it is very liberating because paying no more than $20 for an original KOF 98 cd almost made me wet my pants! I already bought the 99, 98 and 97. I'm looking for some more games, since I can find them in clean state for $20, and most of the time $15.

Like every "old-generation" CD console, it takes a while to load but when it's done, wow, it's so great! Music and sound are really hot! Plus, the system itself looks very strong and solid. I didn't even know there was a memory card inside it. One of my friend who is an electro tech took a look at it and said it's in an amazing condition, in the way that it looks brand new. I called the shop and asked them for some informations about the system; they said the guy who brought the Neo to them took great care of it, hence the mint condition. Mind you, even the CD trap clicks without sighing. It's distinct "clack!" when you shut it.

Well, sorry to have bothered you with this but I'm so happy to have another great system that I thought I could share it with you.

Are there some other Neo Geo CD owners around?

Yes sir!

But not a lot, sadly...

Sound tracks - yeah, here's where the glory is, just GREAT. Do yourself a favour and check out RBFF, RBFFS, AoF3, FF3, LB (heh, a bit of ambient), ML, FFS, too.

LB2 apart, I don't really care for load times, most of them are cool anyway (at least for me).

And - click my sig... :)

Congrats on getting a Neo Geo CD system !

The CD system was the first Neo I bought . I had tons of fun with it . I did get sick of the load times and then bought an AES then MVS . I think the CD system is a good first step into the Neo . I suggest getting some shooters or Neo Turf masters , loading ain't that bad . When it comes to fighters though .........

I was considering getting a CD system, but the opportunity for an AES system arose (thank you Carlson), so I went for that instead.

Are the load times any worse than the Sega CD or Duo? If not, then I don't know what everyone complains about. If they are, then I see the point. :)

Thanks, EW. The site doesn't look very good yet, but I'm working on it. And on that CD vs. CART chart, that really eats into my spare time...

Gemant's info that there are more than 110 (!) differences between MS1 CD and cart scared me a little bit... :)

Thank you all for your replies.

I must say the CD system is exactly to my liking. I am going to purchase Last Blade II this morning, a game that, it is said, has huge loading times. We'll see!

I do not find the loading times long. They're quite reasonable, indeed. The hardware seems to be strong and solid.

And by the way, Takumaji, your site is great.

I own a Neo Geo CD and I think it's great! For someone who doesn't have the money to spend on an AES, or the space to get an MVS, the NGCD is just great.

True, like everyone else says, the load times can be a real pain, mostly when it comes to fighting games. But the only really unplayable game, in my opinion, is Last Blade 2, and the Dreamcast port is just great so it doesn't really bother me. :)

May I HIGHLY recommend Pulstar? It's one heck of a beautiful shooter made by the guys who did R-Type. Awesome on Neo CD with good load times. Be prepared to pay a bit though.

Thank you for your answer, Ducky. Well, I bought Last Blade 2 and I must say I don't mind the 2 minutes loading time. I just see a ratio: 2 mins of loading time for 45 seconds of fun... Well, I must be a masochist!

I'm going to by Pulstar if I can find it. I saw Metal Slug CD too, sold at 999 Francs, that is to say $150, roughly. I refused to buy it since it's a non-reasonable price. Sorry to launch another metal slug -related thread inside a thread, but how much did that game cotst when it came out on CD? Cetainly not $150... Or am I just dreaming this?

Anyway, I agree on the fact that load times kill the fighting games gameplay. It's not as immediate as an AES but, all in all, it's still lots of fun to play!

Yeah, I know what you mean. Specially if you loose a round and want to continue... LB2 loads the after-fight stance, the continue screen, then the level again... etc.

I don't mind most load times, just because I know that I'm playing a great game on a medium which costs only 10% of the cart price. I think that alone is reason enough to wait a couple of secs, isn't it. Let's not call it load times, let's call it... ...CD meditation! :)

Regarding your MS questions, AFAIK MS1 retailed for about $50 in 1996. The reason why the MS games are quite expensive even on CD are, again, the ultra-high prices of their cart counterparts. If a gamer who owns a Neo AES and CD console wants to get MS1, he would get the CD version in most cases, since the original MS1 cart often goes for $1500 (if you're lucky) and up (not counting conversions). Compared to this huge price tag, $150 for a MS1 CD seems reasonable for most of them.

Just be patient and ask around for MS1 CD, don't buy it at a shop but from another Neo player, there are always some who want to switch over to MVS/AES and sell some of their CD games.

Hey!

Well, I just bought a Last Blade CD, japanese version, a few hours ago. I got it for $20. Good condition, no scratches on the CD, it's all fine. I'm trying to buy Galaxy Fight as well, just as a goof! But eventhough it's a little slugish, I like GFight.

I'm pretty new in the NGCD family. I got a Neogeo CD-Z with 2 "newstyle" sticks. Last blade, Real bout Special, Real Bout 2, KOF 97, KOF 98 and Samurai showdown for about 200$ a month ago.

I've been playing alot, mostly the Real Bout games. The music are truly excellent. It's cool with the original mode and blue marys blues in RBFF Special.

As much as I love my CD consoles, I never really liked the new style boards. It's just not the same playing-wise than the old stuff. I tend to sit on my couch with my legs crossed while playing games, and in this position, the new style keeps falling off while pulling off moves which need more "stick work".

The only games I like to play with the new style are MS1..3. Or Raguy, ML, whatever, but no fighter.

The plugs of the new style are also better.

Yes, but new styles sticks are so weaker than the traditional SNK joysticks... Just my humble opinion.

And yes, AtariGuy, I agree with you.

I like Galaxy Fight, too. I honestly don't see why everyone seems to have a problem with this game. It's fun, and a nice change of pace from the neo geo norm.

I also like 3 Count Bout, another game which seems very under-rated.

I asked most of the Neo Geo gamers I know why they hate Galaxy Fight and they said it looks silly and feels sluggish... Oh well. I find this game funny and entertaining. Isn't it the purpose of a game? To entertain?... Very well...

Galaxy Fight is a nice game. IMO the coolest feature is that there are no corners/borders, it just keeps scrolling. Some ppl hate this, but I love it. It's fast, it's fun, and the artwork looks great.

GF also suffered from very bad ports. The PSX version of the game is really awful.

Ppl only seem to play SS4, MS3, the newer KoFs, LB2 and MotW these days... too bad.

For example, Aggressors of Dark Kombat/GanGan is another overseen Neo gem. It's so much fun brawling with another player. Double Dragon is also very cool and cheap as hell on CD, as are the World Heroes games. WH1, 2 and Jet kept me busy for YEARS, they're SO nice and addictive once you get the hang of it.

3 Count Bout... well... I don't particularly hate it, but IMO it's too mixed-up. It's neither a real wrestling game, nor a fighter. It's good fun for 2P tho, I mostly play it in this mode with some friends of mine. The biggest gripe I have with the game is the constant need for excessive stick whaggling/button mashing after you have been beaten to the ground.

Oh, and to your CD-Rom Drive Data:

1.5x Toshiba CD reader, max. data transfer 500k/sec.

Never heard of a 1,5 speed. The NeoGeo CD did not contain one either, but a normal single speed drive (150 Kbyte/sec).

The CDZ Version simply contained a double speeder (300 Kbyte/sec) like the 32-Bit systems (PS, Saturn) contained.
