what is it about the Guilty Gear Series that rubs me/you the wrong way?

I mean the graphics are lovely (movement is a bit stiff and unnatural), and I am a graphics whore. It just doesn't work for me and I am fighting games whore. Some of the character designs are amazing, and others are amongst the worse I've ever seen (Axl is a complete joke). I want to like it but I can't. My mind is open. What's the problem here?

i never really really sat down with any of the games.

but i just dont feel em.

more effort put into it would probably help.

but i cant stand the controls in ggx. i have no problems with any other fighter (specifically on my dc) and i can barely ever pull off a quarter cricle, letalone a double qcf.

but i dont bash the game. i need to play reload.

I never really cared for the whole Rock Band Angle... Axel Rose Character Ripoffs etc...

Although, The Character design, albeit some ripoff(ing) is good (i.e. Bridget), the hi-res sprites are beautiful, there's fantastic levels, and the gameplay is tight.

I have yet to play my PS2 Copy with a Joystick though... The New Hori Stick is coming soon though...

Had a friend over the other day that I still had some "Game Grudges" to Vs. against. I put Guilty Gear XX into the PS2 per his request and it seems Bridget may be a huge turn off for several people. So for now my answer remains simple.

Bridget.

Other than that, it's a great game series. At least, what I've gotten to play of it.

You can't hate the game for Bridget when it has I-NO. She makes up for ALL the character design faults. (not that I think there are any)

There really is nothing wrong with the game, gameplay wise. The only people who dislike it are the ones who can't get past the aesthetics to see the game's real genius.

You really have to be into the poke poke-> huge combo/juggle gameplay to be into it. The game rewards you for aggressive combo play.

The Guilty Gear X characters a little boring, but the XX characters, I-No, Slayer and Zappa are SO cool. They are kinda anime, but a little bit cheesy goth, I think it really works.

Been playing GG Isuka non-stop. Really really fun game once you get used to the wacky controls.

Yeah, that's kind of the whole idea. But the same goes for most fighting games.

but a little bit cheesy goth
Please tell me you didn't say that. :/

Don't get me wrong. I don't hate the game for Bridget. I think it's a brilliant design. It's just the idea of a boy brought up as a girl is a big turn-off for most.

Me, I think it's one of the best games I've seen come out in a while. Then, I am rather starved for 2D goodness in a land of Turkey Hunter and yearly EA sports games.

Maybe it just doesn't click with you. Sort of like how many people never get into the Vs. games.

Personally, my problems with the first one were numerous. Some of the L3 moves were way too powerful (Each character had a move that could be powered up to three levels)--for instance, Kliff's L3 Houkou Gaeshi took away about 65-70% of your total health (all of one bar and almost half of the other). The fatalities were kind of cheap (then again, I sort of find 1-hit kills to be a bit gimmicky--see also Killers, Time). Actually, upon further consideration, Kliff was too powerful in general--he was probably the smallest unit in the game, and he had an insanely powerful heavy slash (and the aforementioned L3 Houkou Gaeshi).

Other than that, it was a decent fighter (at least as far as I was concerned).

Smoke some good weed and drink the cheapest whiskey you can find and you will definately love it.

Seriously though, it's all about personal preference. I personally think it's ok .. however the fighting system is uncomparable to the neo and capcom classics

A lot of fighting games have characters that are easily recognizable archetypes:

Karate: Ryu, Ken, Ryo Sakazaki, Akira
Hero: Terry Bogard, Alex
All American: Guile, Terry Bogard, Ken, Rungo
Ninja: Hanzo, Galford, Kage, Eiji, Ibuki
Strong & Sexy: Mai, Chun-Li, Sara
Military: Guile, Charlie, John Crawley
Badass: Geese, Heihachi, Goh
Monster: Blanka
etc.

...or regional archetypes:

Thai: Sagat, Adon, Shura, Brad Burns, Joe Higashi
Indian: Dhalsim, Purum
China: Chun-Li, Pai Chan, Lau Chan
Brazil: Eddy, Sean
etc.

Instead of archetypes, Guilty Gear has a bunch of messed up lunatics running around Roman Cancelling each other in drag.

It's like a bunch of Anime Characters, Metrosexuals, Superheroes, Goths, Street Fighters, S&M Enthusiasts, and Harajuku Cosplayers decided to drop acid and then trade bits and pieces of each others clothing.

And even the name Guilty Gear is strange. I mean, what the hell is a 'Guilty Gear' anyway? Why would a gear be guilty, and what would it be guilty of? Why does the announcer say 'Heaven or Hell' at the beginning of the match, and what exactly is it about the cancels that makes them 'Roman'?

Guilty Gear is a good series and I like it, but I can see why it's hard for people to relate to it.

It's interesting, I don't usually comment on the "(insert game 1 here) VS (insert game 2 here)" because typically they devolve into mindless flamefests. I also tend to give everything a fair try if enough people recommend it.

That said, I've tried again and again, but I just can't get interested in the GG series. I've played most all of them, except Isuka, and they just don't click with me - I don't really enjoy the style of play, I don't particularly like the character design, and somehow the whole package just feels very stiff, plastic, and lifeless to me.

I definitely recognize that there's an extremely high level of competitive play possible in the series (watching the GG series matches at Tougeki/Super Battle Opera will silence any naysayers on that point), and I like the fact that the popularity of the series makes a good case for the continued relevance and presence of 2D games, but personally, I've just given up on the series. I'll probably give Isuka a try at some point, but there's just something about the mechanics and the feel of GG that keeps me at arm's length.

You should go read about the plot if you want to know what "Guilty Gear" means. It makes perfect sense. Although I would think you'd know that.

I have no clue why they are called Roman Cancels. Maybe just because it sounds cool? Though Dust and Sweep attacks make sense.

edit: people need to stop fast respounding me.

A Guilty Gear is a Coswell Cog gone bad.

Shina Ringo?

I LOVE Shina Ringo! Have a couple of her DVDs! Sooooo cute!!!!! Always been into goth girls, even though they are shallow and annoying.

Bridget is awsome. There needs to be more transvestite characters in videogames!

I meant the poke poke-> huge combo as just another way of saying it's more like MvC2 than SFIII.

I-No is a horrible character design (although obviously not as bad as Bridget), Slayer and Faust are the only ones that I can think of that are truly badass.

I-no must be you're favorite character then huh?

I really like Bridget's design too. I don't see why so many people dislike him. Maybe because they find him sexy, but don't want to admit it?

And the way he sways those hips in his idle animation! <3

edit: this is the second time...

gear = drugs in england. guilty gear must be the paranoid feeling you get when you smoke pot sometimes. thus guilty gear.
makes perfect sense really.

by the way - I think your right in your analisis. Its very japanese orientated with alot of internal connotations. I guess I like my games a bit more toned down/less ridiculous.

Just can't get into the story..really,although I must admit that some of the character designs are pretty cool.

Also,I can't stand the graphic effects in the GGX series. All the flashes and dust particles just doesn't make any sense to me...too distracting.

Now Loading- Yeah dude, I-No is the only character I seriously play with! So cool. She's what got me into GGXX when it was released in the arcade, from then I've been a fan.

It's the style I hate...the mixing pot of cool and corny bullshit that rubs me the wrong way.

This bad ass looking guy beats your ass and to finish you off, he turns you into a pool ball and breaks the rack? WTF is that all about?

I don't mind corney fighters, but it's the cool charecters with bullshit corny stuff that offsets the style and annoys the hell out of me.

It's like the terminator beating someone to death with a bag of teddy bears...it's just seems stupid to me.

yes. its dumb. and I can't get over Axl's weird little sway. some of these characters should eat more meat.
Darkstalkers had the weirdness down to perfection, never overdoing it (too much anyway), getting just the right balance. Guilty Gear is like lush mugen.

I agree completely.

Not everyone can actually enjoy Guilty Gear games, but us who are able to enjoy it... simply love it.

and that's the bottom line. maybe if I wore my girlfiend's g-string whilst playing I'd feel more at home.
