It's open to interpretation if any of them are actually connected (as is everything in the series), unless you ask Verbatum, in which case everything is set in stone. Nominally, 1 and 3 are supposed to be connected. 2 is a better game though, in my opinion.

Silent Hill 1&3 are definitely connected. Silent Hill 2 is it's own story, although I hear it is vaguely connected to SH4.

It's correct that verbatum will probably be the best to ask...

But I personally consider myself something of a Silent Hill Freak as well...

I have played all the Silent Hills (1-4) , and completed them all on normal to hard,(and have seen all the endings) with the exception of Silent Hill 1 (PSX) which I am about 50% through.

The biggest unifiying factor across all the games...
Aside from the city "Silent Hill" itself (of course), even though Silent Hill 4 really doesn't even technically go into the town Silent Hill, it takes place in a nearby town, Ashfield...

The biggest unifying Factor would be, the cult. Starting with SH1, there is talk of a Silent Hill Religious cult (A form of Satanism it seems...or other devil worship), and the key character Alessa, who's picture is shown for the first time as a child in SH1, and is more eleaborated on in SH3... Because she is supposed to give birth to this cults "god" which is in fact... the devil... of sorts....

The cult is really not mentioned in SH2, although it is a bit in SH4 with the Wishhouse childrens orphanage, and of course the Cults Symbol, which differs in SH1, is on SH3's savegame menu, and is the portals in SH4...

Another unifying factor in the Silent Hill Series would be, The Hospital, every game has a section taking place either in Silent Hill Hospital, or in SH4's case, a similar hospital...

The thing of it is, I kind of consider the cult a red herring. The hospital is more significant.

Alessa = Cheryl = Heather

Henry Mason was just a 'short term father' if i remember correctly.

Oh yeah, and the hospital theme is there simply because alessa was trapped in a hospital room for a long time. The visions that you encounter in every SH game are just what alessa see's. thats why there are stretchers in parts of the game that really don't fit into the scene to well.

Silent Hill is a very strange series, in that it leaves a LOT to the imagination, and that's what makes it so good.

Interesting point... I've never thought of it that way... care to elaborate? I'm assuming, your thinking of how Alessa was trapped in the hospital as a child, shown in SH1, remembered in SH3...

And Yes Alessa = Cheryl = Heather... and her 3 souls... but I did not want to Spoil it to much.. as Alessa is mentioned in Sh1, and when you start playing SH3... you do not know the character is in fact Alessa... she is at first... Heather

and yes, the Hospital is key across all of the games. And one of the biggest and most effective scare tactics, across all the games, is to place, Stretchers, Gurneys, and wheelchairs where they SHOULD not be...

also Birth, and babies... are used throughout the games... for some very effective disturbing imagery...

I disagree with this wholeheartedly... SH, differs from game to game... and nightmares, and although Alessa is absolely KEY... she does not MAKE Silent Hill.. to a certain exten the main character does... it's their worst fears etc... in SH2 the main character was feeling forlorne about his sickly wife, and longed for her more healthy days... and some say this is why the enemies, have that "sexy" feminine grotesque look to them... (The leg monsters anyone...)

You have only scratched the surface...

Henry Mason... Raped angela(SH2). when she was small.. ( and She is in fact the person who killed him) there is a cutscene alluding to this, and the enemy "DoorMan"... if inspected closely, resmbles a large body preying on someone on a bed...

Yes, all of the Silent Hill Hill games have the cult as an element tying them together, as well as the concept of "Silent Hill is what you take wth you". Remeber, Silent Hill is much more than Allessas dreams and nightmares: Silent Hill is made unique for each visitor, made reponsable by the innocent dead burined and killed during teh civil war, and "Vitale" has the job of truning the "pipes of reality" within that persons sins. Still, story-wise: 1, the Play novel, and 3 are connected. Whil 2 and 4 are stand-alone games, 4 has some connection with 2.

One thing about the "Doorman": The door man is part of Angela's world: She was raped and beaten numurous times by her father, and as a teenage girl, killed her father by cutting out his genitals with a knife.

The "Doorman" is a manifistation of her father raping her, which is the main reason why she lashes out so strongly at it.

Man, I love talking Silent Hill, but there is soo much to say, and I must be going!

SH2 is considered the best in the series and you seriously need to play it if you are interested in the Silent Hill Series... probably the best thing from Sh2 is one of the best designed enemies/bosses ever... Pyramid Head.... absolutely Brilliant....

but if you want some more on the whole cult angle, and along the lines of SH1.... get Sh3....

Als Sh4 will be out in the US this fall.... the import is fantastic though...AND in English...

The room in which you first fight against the Doorman is simply amazing, it has the most terrible phallic symbols ever shown in a game.

Get both games. SH2 is a Greatest Hits title, and SH3 can be found for $30 or even sometimes $20 bucks.

Absolutely... and it is somewhat gratifying when Angela really beats the hell out of it, once it has already been killed...

Pyramid Head is the spirit of Silent Hill, you should play Silent Hill 2, soon.

I don't quite understand why you are calling Angela "Alessa".

Are you saying that the character from SH2 is actually Alessa?

Hmmm... it's complex Heather = Cheryl = Alessa, if I remember correctly...

To be honest, the 3 souls angle/multiple people in one body part in Silent Hill 3 was the most confusing to me, and Verbatum could elaborate on this in much more detail... Although I will say.. in Silent Hill 3, there is a fantastic scene where a phone rings and someone wished you a "happy birthday" even though it is not... that you know of....

but according to "the cult" 'Alessa" is her "true" name. And i'm only referring to Silent Hill 3's main character...Angela from Silent Hill 2 I believe is the crazy chick with the knife, that you meet in the cemetery and is of no direct relation to "Alessa" from Silent Hill 3

So Henry Rapes Heather? How did that get discovered?

Not the detective that she goes around with... her surrogate/foster father raped her... and there is a cutscene/enemy/boss that elaborates on this...

I knew all that. I just thought you were saying Angela from SH2 was somehow related to Alessa/Cheryl/Heather.

*Spoilers for SH3*

Apparently the three "souls" can exist apart from each other. Remember when Alessa tries to kill Heather to prevent the God from being born?

To be honest the more that I think about it... I have gotten the Angela/Alessa Storylines confused... With such similar names, and similar plot points... it is understandable...

in retrospect, I remember Angela from Sh2, and her reaction once Doorman (Her incarnation of her rapist father) he was beaten, she hurled a TV at him, and kicks his body repeatedly, if I recall...

now Alessa (or Heather) from Sh3... there is a scene where she walks into her apartment to find her surrogate/foster father slain sitting on his recliner, with blood streaming down his pelvic area (if I recall correctly)... and I thought there was some connections, that this man had abused Alessa(Heather) as well, and she is in fact the one who slayed him, for retribution... but perhaps I was wrong, and this man was a good man, who only cared for her, He did rescue her from the cult afterall...

Verbatum, when you have some time, please clarify these two disturbing plot points..

On this one point, at least, I am in complete agreement.
