Those who are in the Tri-state area or close to it, listen up:

I found out that the Kinokuniya Bookstore in the Mitsuwa Japanese supermarket complex is having a Customer Appreciation sale when I went to the summer festival today. In truth, I think it is because the plaza is undergoing renovation, it is after all nearly 2 decades young and in need of some vitality breathed into the complex, so they had apparently been having a sale since yesterday. I'm sure people have already went through the bookstore and snatched a lot of good stuff, because the All About SNK Illustrations or the Poster artbooks were no longer there when I was there today, but there's still lots of incredible stuff. Kinokuniya is one of the largest bookstore chains in Japan, and it is most likely the largest overseas. It even has a small CD section, as you probably know Japanese CDs are notoriously expensive, but the 50% discount will probably bring it within your purse's reach.

All books, mangas, and magazines, even the Playboys are 50% off (with very few exceptions)
All Stationeries are 50% off (If you need Japanese writing pads or ink or pens or Calligraphy brushes, now is the time to stock up)
All CDs are 50% off (again, with very few exceptions)
And something is 10% off, I forget what it was, may have been the DVDs and videos there.

I believe the sale will end on August 2, it is in progress right now according to the circular I received.

Here is the address of Kinokuniya in Edgewater, NJ:

Mitsuwa Marketplace
595 River Road
Edgewater, NJ 07020
Tel: (201)941-7580
Hours: 10AM - 8 PM

If you are getting there from NYC, you can take the Shuttle Bus located at the Port Authority South Terminal Gate #51, it only costs 2 dollars each way, and the ride takes roughly 30 minutes. The buses come every half an hour, the first bus is 8:15AM and the last Bus leaving from NY is 6:45 PM. The last bus leaving from NJ to return to NYC is 8:15PM, so be sure not to miss your last bus to get back to the city.

I didn't know they were having a sale there. Damn, I better get my ass over there and see what kind of stuff they have. Will they still have the sale on the 2nd or will it end after the sale?

Yeah, definitely get over there, because we had one of those at the Kinokuniya in the Mitsuwa Plaza here in L.A., and when the sale was over, the bookstore closed for good. Boo, man, boo.

Major gay.

Their selection at Comic-Con this year was horrible compared to last year when I foolishly passed up on blowing $70 on a Xenogears Perfect Works.

Now that you mention this, I realize I'm confusing Asahiya bookstore with Kinokuniya. Kinokuniya would have been less of a loss; they've kind of figured out there's a bit of money to be made gouging the american animation/comics/games fans. Kind of the successors to Books Nippon. Definitely better than nothing, though.

Asahiya bookstore opened a store in NYC just sometime early this year. Their selection is nice, by no means pale to Kinokuniya.

UPDATE: I called Kinokuniya, and they are in fact moving, not exactly closing, but that explains the 50% off sale. The person I spoke to on the phone said the location for the Kinokuniya is not yet determined, but the store will be open until this Tuesday it appears.

Is this a second Asahiya? Because there's been an Asahiya bookstore in NYC for at least 10-12 years, if not longer. I used to buy books and magazines at the Asahiya near Grand Central from 1993 or so onwards.

There's also an Asahiya in Torrance. The one in Little Tokyo closed, and there was another small shop there that closed recently. Both were very good stores, but then again I don't buy that much stuff, either.

Would anyone in the area be able to check if they have a copy of the new Mazinger Angels book 1? I'd pay you for it and shipping if you'd pick it up for me (if they have it).

Yeah, that's the one I go to now, but the downtown one had that arcade...KOF2000-'02, SS5, LB, SVC. It was nice to play a couple games if I visited the bookstore. Waaaay back in the day, the Torrance Yaohan plaza (now Mitsuwa) had a 4-slot, but that thing's many years gone. The last game I remember seeing on it was World Heroes 2 Jet.
