I started messing around with my sisters old PC . I want to use it for music and such. All it had was phone jacks so I bought a $10.00 ethernet adapter thing type ass. Well every time I try to use the internet the stupid thing tries to dial out and says "no dial tone" Well no shit no dial tone I have it hooked up to my router . How can I get this thing to understand that there is an ethernet connection and not a dial up connection?

You configured the IP address and such to network it with the PC that connects to the modem/or the modem itself?

???? I guess not?

I'm assuming that you have other PC that have a direct internet access (computer A). This older comp (comp B) is conected to the other via ethernet. That's it?

Are you using a hub or direct connecting the 2 computers?

EDIT: forget it. I re-read your post :emb:

Try to copy the other PC's network/connection configuration, with a different IP address.

I edited my post. See Start menu > Settings > Network connection. Use the same configs from the other computer, just change the IP address, if you plan to use the 2 computers simulataneously accessing the internet.

so where do I get the IP adress from?
The old comp has window 98 and my eveyday PC has XP

98: Start Menu > control panel > network > ip protocol

XP: Start Menu > settings > network settings > local connection (or something similar) > properties > ip protocol

Just keep the ip address in same range (10.0.0.3 - 10.0.0.4 and so on)

Your ISP charges for this kind of support (by phone)? It's pretty easy to explain by phone.

you've probably set an IP or setup DHCP on the dialup adaptor, delete it

then, you'll have an ethernet adaptor only

Good news I got it to work!
Bad news I was leaning back in my chair and it broke :emb:
I installed ad aware and spy bot and removed like a billion files .

When i shut it down it says that something is running and cannot shut down ?
I'll play with it some more later when I replace my chair.
Its got something wrong with it . I hope its a cheap fix since my sister was going to throw it away . So far $10.00 invested and internet works . I want to make this thing a rom/music/porn machine .
