I've been thinking about making this thread for quite a while, but now with the release of Final Tuned, it seems like a necessity.

I know that there are a ton of VF4 players here, so it seems fitting that there be one comprehensive thread about VF4: Evolution and Final Tuned. There have been a lot of VF4 discussions on the forums, but all the information in these posts is spread throughout dozens of threads. Why not have a consolidated place for VF4 fans, similar to the shmups thread?

So, people: post news, competition results, character strategies, or just simply homages to this absolutely brilliant fighter.

For starters, what characters do various people play? Primarily in the arcades or primarily at home?

Basic links for VF news:

I love VF4evo, but I am not too good at the game, and I definitely suck at talking about the intricate strategies involved.

I hope Final Tuned gets a port on xbox/ps2.

I absolutely hated the VF series until VF4 came out, and I'm loving it more with each new version (Evolution, Final Tuned).

For me, VF was always a game or so behind Tekken in terms of graphics and gameplay (although you could argue that the gameplay in VF was just as good if not better, I personally couldn't stand the long floating jumps). So for me VF2 was on par with Tekken, VF3 was still only at the level of Tekken 2 etc.

But with VF4 the series has caught up with, if not surpassed Namco's flagship title.

And one of the reasons why I now prefer VF is because it's so realistic. No fireballs, robots, poison breath, or demons. Instead we have actually martial artists duking it out using actual techniques (although, as Jake noted, Tae Kwon Do is mysteriously absent, and Kung Fu is a tad overrepresented)

I am mostly a Kage user, and I always prefer real competitors instead of the "Quest" mode.

I named my Kage "Fudomaru~" as a tribute to the lonely shinobi from Gowcaizer

I also enjoy playing with Akira and Jacky.

That's a good point, any chance we'll see an Xbox port of this version?

Aoi 4 life.

If you want, I can post the movie sites I posted in the Longest Thread, where Mushiki and I often got into brutal arguments over it. Sometimes.

These are the new skills for each character in FT. If you live in Japan, you probably don't care as you've seen them anyway.

http://www.popy.tv/popy/page033.html

Amusement Stage POPY's FT movies are at the top. I learned how to play Aoi by watching Kaede play, he plays her much more like a grappler, instead of the poke and run kind of Aoi you see so often.

second link from the top, these movies are big for being 1 on 1, but they are good quality. The Wolf player there need work though :/

Game & Amusement Bee Bee's movies

that's all that I have bookmarked for now. But those that can only play VF4 on their PS2's should be happy with this, as it's likely the closest you'll get to the competiitve spirit of the arcade :/

so how about those Red Counters, huh?!

Don't get your hopes up too high. Virtua Fighter is big in Japan. PS2 is more popular than XBOX there. So Sega will continue to release VF on PS2 IMO. As for the topic I use Jacky, since I suck at the game.

This is Blasphemy!
MAYBE (big maybe) VF1 was behind tekken 1, but after VF2, it was all over for tekken. The characters, gameplay, and movement were just better.

vf4 is great, wish i had time to play it more.

I hope it comes out on the Xbox, but I think you're right. The PS2 is big in Japan; VF4 is big in Japan. It's all but obvious that it will stay on PS2.

And, Akira owns all.

I'm strictly a Lion player. I'm not all that good, though I can hold my own in a lot of US arcades. When I was back in Japan briefly last winter, I got completely tooled in the couple of arcades I stopped into, but I sort of expected that. Evo on the PS2 made me improve my skills, and while it's no substitute for real VS play, the AI in the port is pretty astonishing compared to most fighting series.

I've always been into Virtua Fighter, but VF4 made me take improving a bit more seriously. I've been with the series from the original VF onwards - I was in Japan when VF2 was still played regularly in the arcades, and loved it. I wasn't particularly into 3, but 4 rekindled the love. I'd concur with most here that if Final Tuned is ported, it'll probably be PS2 exclusive.

It is an absolute CRYING SHAME that VF4E or FT will never appear on the Box.
If VF was playable on Live, my God...that would own so damn hard.
Not to mention the fact that the game could look as good as the Naomi 2 arcade ver.

Just one more reason to cry in your beer. :crying:

Its not just the power of the system its running on, the arcade monitor runs at high rez (31khz) & thus doubles the frame rate, which is why is looks so much better on the arcade!

Mainly I'm a Jeff player but i've been working with Goh and Aoi. I seem to like the "underdog" characters (if you can call them that) than the popular poster boys(girls) of the series *coughAkira,Jacky,Sarah,Paicough*. Still, I have plenty of respect for Akira players as he takes more skill to use.

I've recently started quest mode with Goh (named Go-Goh!). Only 3rd dan so far but it still amazes me that I can play this game so intensely and it only cost $20 and it's fairly old. I'd kill to have some human competition to see how badly I suck, heck I even bought the game for a friend so she could learn the game, but alas, she pretty much ignores it. I'm considering buying ANOTHER copy of this game for a backup, and I REALLY need to find a decent stick.

I don't think it's not impossible that Virtua Fighter will be on the Xbox, considering that the VF spinoff game is coming to the Game Cube.

Great thread!

I didn't seriously get into VF4 until the playstation 2 release of it. Before I had bought VF3rb on dreamcast and found it impossible to get into.

On VF Evo I play Lau. He's got a TON of juggles and high/low mind games.

Tsukaesugi and me played hours a couple days ago, it was the most fun I've had with versus fighting in a LONG time. It's so satisfiying.

Well I'm trying to get into learning more characters. I'm trying to get into Wolf, but he's really difficult, you really gotta have a solid strategy with him cause he's so slow. But SO fun to play.

For final tuned they changed laus df+pk move to a stun instead of an air juggle  but i think it's even more powerful now... can't wait to spend some quality time with it.

I love VF.

I have been playing it since the first one hit the arcade due to the realism.

Lau has been my charicter through the series and I have also picked up Wolf and Kage.

Yes VF4 on LIVE would be amazing.
