I've recently been diagnosed with it  my son has it too (its heredetry and dominant) :oh_no:

basically it means that I can't eat anything with wheat in it (that includes anything with wheat flour in it), and a couple of other things such as Barley. If I do consume something containing this stuff I will get anything from a stomach ache, to full blown alergic reaction like I'm experiencing now (only happened 2 times before - got most of my body covered in a rash, a bit of fever and a couple of other unmentionables).

This can be quite a serious disease - I'm 27 going on 28 and have just found out I have this, but for most of my life and especially as of my late teens, I have constantly suffered assorted ailments related to this cursed disease.

What pisses me off is that I can no longer touch stuff I have always eaten and loved, and until I get cooking something tasty, I am limited to eating some expensive yet quite disgusting bisquits, and spagheti :blow_top:
For the next 3 years I can't touch anything containing wheat... you try it. I quit smoking a year ago and that was hard enough, this is alot more difficult (I'm by no means a big eater, but I snack alot). I'm otherwise perfectly fit and yet I'm forced to eat healthy. The irony.

Anyone else have this condition? in the US its like 1 in 150 or 250 that has it, so its rare but not unheard of (truth be told its most probably underdiagnosed - if some foods give you trouble check for the possibility).

I was in the hospital for two weeks (cuz of some really serious apendicitis) and I couldn't eat anything except Jell-O and watery soup the entire time----That was almost driving me insane, so I feel for you... :oh_no:

Sounds like an Atkins diet though...

http://www.celiac.com/

I had a blood test and had lots of the wrong kind of antibodies. Its basically an alergic reaction to wheat.
It explains why I felt so well when I was in Japan though.. And then there's always Mexican food

Dude, an all Japanese and Mexican food regimen doesn't sound terrible.
Although I would seriously bemoan the lack of Italian food with no pizza or pasta.
Good luck with your condition though man.

Very sorry to hear about that man. I myself am pretty of allergic to salt-water seafood. I ate a swordfish steak one time at a dinner, and two hours later I thought my friggin' throat was going to swell shut. Anyway, sorry to hear about this - I'm around the same age as you, and sometimes I really feel like I've totally lost that whole teenage invincibility thing. I can't even fool myself by getting drunk anymore :( .... I guess we're getting old man.

That's what I was gonna say.

The Japanese eat all fish and Rice and stuff. The rare occasion when you'll come across wheat is the fried stuff, and that stuff ain't good for you anyways so just steer clear of that.

I'd say you were a Japanese born in an American's body. There's been some major bureaucratic mess-up up there with Him.

My aunt have it, too. She worked it around easily, the main point was the change of bread types that she eats. I hope you get used soon... yes, it sucks, but could be 1000 times worse :)

Like being allergic to air or water... that would be a sucky allergy.

Good luck, Devil!

Well, I was just trying to sound optimistic... my aunt doesn't seem to suffer from it... it's just a case of getting used - but no allergy > any allergy, of course.

PS: I'm allergic to lots of things... :(

Sorry to hear about it.

You're the second person I've heard of with it. Four years ago, when I was working on the road and travelling with different co-workers, one of them had something just like it (she never told me the name, but it had the same problem of not being able to eat wheat). We would go to all these restaurants and she'd have to really specialize her order.

Of course, this was pre-Atkins-craze.

So I guess you could think of it as being on Atkins, permanently ;)

I believe they do make cookes without wheat (they're called Gluten-free, I don't know if that's what you need). I've had some, they're not a bad substitute!

I find it strange you didn't notice that before... Or it didn't affect you until now? I mean, when you were eating wheat as a teenager, you had any problem?

One university mate had this same problem, it was fun travelling with her to Greece, half her luggage was special food.

I've actually known someone that was allergic to a lot of different kinds of protein. She couldn't have meat or even peanut butter? We had a company trip to Cancun once, and she had brought along a bunch of food.

Another friend of mine is allergic to nuts (but not peanuts, thank god... You'd be surprised on how many things you can't eat because of peanuts. Most places that make food handle peanuts in some way or another so they all display a warning. :P)

Another friend is allergic to sesame seeds.

I'm not quite used to seafood, I don't get allergic reactions but lets just say that people really don't like being around me after I've had some. :P

Good luck. There are at least a few examples of non-wheat diets around so I hope you can adopt some of those.

well at home I'd eat meat and vedgetables just about every day, and that didn't vary much, and when I did feel ill, it was always put down to nerves, or digestive problems. Most people with celiac disease are diagnosed with tons of other things before they find out what they have.
Things got very bad from 18 on, when my diet changed to mostly pasta and beer (university years). But I put it down to lifestyle..

Atkins diet has yet to make any sort of impact down here (I'm sure it will soon though), but I weigh like 65 kg, so its not like I need it.

Anyway thanks all of you. The truth is that its not a big deal if you think about it, and there are worst things, I'm actually glad I 'have' something. It atleast explains alot of things.

Bobak: yep I have to eat gluten free foods. Unfortunately they mostly taste like crap :help:

Verythrax: Is your aunt Brasilian? Because I had it understood that rice is a main food source over there, even used to replace bread. Anyway, different people have different symptons. A worse case scenario would be complete malnutrition (what happens is that the cilia hairs (where de illness gets its name) in the small intestine are damaged/flatened due to the gluten content in food, and therefore causes mal nutrition), and if left untreated crap like early osteoporosis, attention deficiency disorder, emotional problems (I come from a long line of whiny mood swingers), and some other crap.

Galfordo: yup, we are closer to 30 than we are to 20 :crying: I know what you mean about the drinking and stuff... it just doesn't work anymore. Worse still, soon we won't even understand what kids are into. We'll just be old and lame noooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Yes, just like my mother :glee:

But seriously, I don't know much about her symptoms or disease background. She avoids all kinds of cookies and bread, eating only centeio bread (it's the portuguese name, maybe the spanish name is similar) and certain types of cookies... I don't remember if she have problems with rice.

But it's not big deal for her... the bread/cookies that her eat everyday are more expensive, but it's better tasting stuff that we don't eat everyday. It was just like 'choosing the best over the average' situation for her, if you know what I mean ;) - she eats very well.

I would say to you to don't think heavily about substitutes for wheat in pasta or breads, but changing your diet to other types of food (meat, vegetables, beans and so on). There's a lot of types of food, you will really suffer only if bread and pasta are the main part of your daily meals.

man.. .hope you get better DR... and with a little life style adjustment, you'll be back on top of things in no time :)

Is this a contageous (spelling?) type of disease? Heriditary only.... or how does it move on?

hey BV! :D
Its called a disease but I guess its more like a condition, and its compltly heredetry, not contageous at all.

Verythrax: the thing is that wheat is used in so much stuff you wouldn't believe (chocolate, some cheeses, hamburgers etc). Its used as a filler to make up the weight of the products (not always advertised though). That's what's so lame. I have to check that there isn't the slightest amount of wheat in anything.

If you miss pasta I recommend quinoa pasta. It's not going to bother you at all, and doesn't taste half bad. Also, your local health food store probably carries it.

Are you sure that ammounts of wheat do harm for you? In my aunt case, If the wheat presence is very low, there's no problem big problem.

And yes, the first months will suck a LOT, until you get used to it, to not forget and eat wheat by mistake, and to know the brands of the food. If you are lucky, you can avoid trouble without give up of much things, taking care just about the brands. I really wish that's the case with the variety at your area ;)
