I think that leiji's best manga has to be captain herlock
gun frontier comes second though

Hands down, galaxy express 999, nothing else can touch it, for one every one of Matsumotos other charatcers are in the GE999 universe, it's the fucking star trek of manga, I actually think it's one of the best mangas of all time, period, it's also still running to this day!

I think you mean Space Battleship Yamato, or Star Blazers here in the US.

I've always been partial to Galaxy Express 999, mainly because I grew up with it. It's still one of my favorite mangas and animes around.

As far as mangas go I'd have to say I like Pilot 262 that he did in the late 60's early 70's that has a different version of Captain Harlock flying around in WWII in the Germany Airforce's Me-262. *Matsumoto himself went back to this manga he did early on and rewrote it a bit and changed the character to Leinders, and that is what became the 1st short in the 1999 OVA THE COCKPIT entitled: "Stratospheric Currents", and the plane became the much more rare supped up version of the FW-190 which was the TA-152. ---I simply love the minimalism he used in this early manga {translated to English by a friend}.
