This is a genre I have always wanted to get into, but never could for whatever reason. I was wondering what some good ones for a beginner might be. Right now I only own Starcraft, but I haven't really played it to much.

Also, my PC isn't that great, so I would prefer older games.

Age of Empires 2 the Age of Kings is pretty good.

Warcraft 2 is great, and can be found for cheap.

Warcraft 3 + TFT expansion > all, no disputes.

Ground Control 2 is a really nice new one, too.

Steer away from Command and Conquer Generals + ZH expansion at all costs.

Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2.
Age of Empires 2.
Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel.

No Warcraft 3 if your computer is older. It's pretty resource intensive even in low detail on my PC.

Warcraft 3 isnt too bad on older machines. We were running it decently on my friends 500mhz machine with a voodoo 3 graphics card. It ran alright, it was definitely playable.

Either way warcraft 3 is great. C&C: Generals is ok. I'd only pick it up to play with friends, otherwise its pretty lame.

Arrr.. WC3 lags my shit down too much. I'm on a Celeron 733mhz with integrated graphics (probably the culprit) on an Intel i810.

Well even on my friends 500mhz machine we had to turn all the graphics down and when the battles get hectic (3 players with maxed out troops) things start to slow down. But at least its playable.

Rise of Nations!!

to a lesser extent Empire Earth.

Rise of Nations should be played by all RTS fans.

WC3 and starcraft are great and all...
but the BEST RTS game EVER is Myth II: Soul Blighter (by none other than Bungie).

Brilliant story, briliant control, brilliant sound/atmosphere/presentation, just plain awesome game. And there are a ton of mods, including complete new campaigns.

Its old, so it will run great on nearly any computer still being used today, but the graphics are quite decent. And bloody too.

Myth: The Fallen Lords is very good as well, but II is better.
Myth III is decent, but it wasnt developed by Bungie, and thus falls short of the first 2.

I cant say enough good things about this game. it'll be cheap too, so get it!

Well, in terms of online experience, SC and WC3 will definitely give you the best experience.

Nearly all other RTS out there (with the exception of AOF-style games that have the same units for each team) are horribly unbalanced.

starcraft :D but you already own that :annoyed:

warcraft 2 bnet edition!

Those are my favorites. I used to like the command and conquer series. Red Alert 2 was pretty cool... as was red alert 1, BUT.... I am not as fond of them anymore.

if you want to play some SC on bnet, let me know... I have a few people that still play.

TA is badass... and the mod community is still alive and well for that game.
I think it's probably the most modded and edited RTS out there.
People have made thousands of custom units for it.

Too bad TA2 got scrapped = /

Total Annihilation

My Dad has been playing it (and the expansion) since it came out... and he still plays it to this day. Playing through the game on Hard is nothing to him, and the Krogoth Encounter is a cakewalk... and yet he keeps playing...

Only problem I have with TA is that the sound doesn't work correctly = /
WinXP + DirectX problem, I think.
I have to turn off hardware accelerated sound just to make it "listenable".

Warcraft 3 no doubt...It only takes a 400mhz Pentium II with 128mb of ram plus an 8mb graphics card:) to run it...

Try the game in:

800x600x16 Resolution or even lower
Put all video options too low
switch off ambient sounds
switch off enviromental effects
disable 3-D Positional Audio

Total Annihilation is def the bomb, as B Jerky said. TA and Starcraft are really where RTS started its popularity. I also recommend:

Age of Empires:Age of Kings
Age of Mythology:Titans (add-on) Get teh non-Titans patch for this one
Empire Earth + The Art of Conquest(add-on)
Ground Control (brand new and offers Coop Campaigns)
Command and Conquer: Red Alert 2 + Yuris Revenge(add-on)
Dungeon Keeper 1 & 2
Earth 2150 and Moon 2150

Those outta keep ya busy for a while. Enjoy and good luck.
