I still own a lot of consoles and console games and have recently been thinking about getting rid of the majority of them due to the lack of play they get. I guess I'd have to say I'm pretty much arcade only and have been that way for the last couple of years.
It all started with an AES system and it was just going to be for a couple of the older games, that didn't quite happen though. As soon as I got the AES in my hands I knew there was no turning back. When I wanted to step upto some of the newer, high dollar games I decided it was time to get a Neo cab, mainly for Metal Slug and some MVS only games but after getting the cab I really didn't acquire many more homecarts. I stuck to collecting MVS carts/kits for a while but had an interest to branch off and get some classic JAMMA games.
Soon I ended up with a Super Gun and some JAMMA boards, next came CPS2, Taito F-3, IGS PGM... I'm now upto four cabs(3 Neo Geo, 1 Capcom Impress) a couple of superguns and what I consider to be a pretty nice collection of arcade games. I must say though, I would never have gotten into CPS2 if it wasn't for Razoola and his suicide free fixes, who wants to have a collection of games they know will die without a new battery every 5 or so years. I just recently got back half my collection of games from Raz and will be sending out the other half in a month or so, I'd highly reccomend anyone with CPS2 boards that hasn't already made them suicide free to do so.
The way I look at it I'll be playing these for the rest of my life and a lot of them probably won't be as easy to come by in the future. Theres just something about 2-D arcade games that does it for me that the new consoles lack, maybe its because I view 2-D games as a work of art, not only to the eyes but to the ears. I enjoy much of the music in SNK and Capcom games aswell as other classics, especially 2-D shooters(Battle Garegga, Batrider...). Or maybe it's because I remember the magic of stepping into an arcade as a child. Either way they provide me a way to relax and forget about the problems of the world, something everyone needs even if video games aren't the chosen outlet.
