Being a PGM owner who's interested in collecting each of the installments of the Sangoku Senki / Knights of Valour series -- and having noticed that there are a good number of other PGM owners at n-g.com -- I'm posting this thread, hoping to accomplish two things:

1) Compile a list of all the n-g.com forum members who are PGM owners (to better facilitate communication and exchange of information between us, without alot of search-functioning to find other owners)

2) Compile a list of all the installments in the Sangoku Senki / Knights of Valour series of PGM games, including alternate titles for different geographic regions (the way the games listed in the 5 language sections of IGS' website is a mite confusing, to say the least, and for my own sake I'd like to get straight on how many installments exist, which countries received releases of each, and the (general) differences between them)

For those who are unfamiliar with IGS CO., LTD. and its PGM arcade hardware, IGS (International Games System) is a Taiwanese company, with a website at www.igs.com.tw . The PGM (PolyGame Master) is a mother-board / daughter-cart system, the design of which seems VERY reminiscient of recent editions of the NEO-GEO MVS 1-slot mobos. More info on the PGM can be found here (http://www.system16.com/other/hrdw_pgm.html) (in English), and here (http://www.polygamemaster.de/) (in German).

================================================== ========

Having searched thru old threads on the PGM and its games, here's the list I've compiled of n-g.com members who either have previously owned or currently own PGMs:

I know this isn't everybody (and I know that a few of these accounts haven't been used in a while), but I think that's a substantial portion of us. If you are a PGM owner (whether your name is on the above list or not), could you please add a post to this thread, share your opinions of and experiences with the PGM system, and give us a list of the games you own (including which language each game is in)?

> NeoTurfMasta and chris1 -- you'd both previously indicated an interest in the PGM; have either of you taken the plunge yet?

> chimpmeister -- you mentioned that your friend owns a PGM with KoV; is he a member here, by chance?

> nruva and kaos -- you've both posted gameplay opinions in PGM threads; do either of you own PGM games, or do you have arcades in your area with PGM cabs?

> Alex0916 -- are you a PGM owner?

IGS has produced a series of popular side-scrolling beat'em-ups based on the legendary heroes of China's "Three Kingdoms" era (also depicted in the Sangokushi / Romance of the Three Kingdoms series, the Sangoku Musou / Dynasty Warriors series, and numerous other games). The English-language editions of this series are called "Knights of Valour." In Kanji, the title is rendered as:

三国戦記

In Japanese, the title is pronounced "Sangoku Senki." I don't speak Chinese, so I don't know what the original pronunciation of the title is. Could any of our Chinese-speaking members explain the Cantonese and Mandarin pronunciations of this title?

So far, here's what I've been able to cobble together in my attempts to list all the installments in the Sangoku Senki / Knights of Valour series:

三国戦記
Sangoku Senki
Knights of Valour (LINK (http://www.system16.com/other/hrdw_pgm_page2.html#kov))
the first game in the series

三国戦記 PLUS
Sangoku Senki PLUS
Knights of Valour PLUS (LINK (http://www.system16.com/other/hrdw_pgm_page2.html#kovp))
the first upgrade to the first game

三国戦記 風雲再起 (LINK-1 (http://203.69.115.76/www/chinese/product/sango15/title.htm)) (LINK-2 (http://203.69.115.76/www/china/product/sango15/title.htm))
Sangoku Senki SUPER HEROES
Knights of Valour SUPER HEROES (LINK (http://www.igs.com.tw/www/en/ac_sg15.html))
the second upgrade to the first game. I'm not sure why the Japanese version (this is the only KoV installment I've picked up so far) went with the English "SUPER HEROES" instead of sticking with the Chinese-language version's 4-kanji subtitle. Can someone explain the Cantonese and Mandarin pronunciations of that subtitle? In Japanese, it would be pronounced "Fuu'un Saiki"

三国戦記2 (LINK-1 (http://203.69.115.76/www/chinese/product/sango2/mai_0.htm)) (LINK-2 (http://203.69.115.76/www/chinese/product/sango2/china/mai_0.htm))
Sangoku Senki 2 (LINK (http://203.69.115.76/www/japan/product/sangoku2jp/jmai_0.htm))
Knights of Valour 2
the first true sequel in the series

三国戦記2 飛龍在天 (LINK (http://203.69.115.76/www/chinese/product/sg2fly/index.htm))
Sangoku Senki 2 -Hiryuu Zaiten-
Knights of Valour 2 NINE DRAGONS (LINK (http://www.igs.com.tw/www/en/ac_sg2fly.html))
the first upgrade to KoV2

三国戦記2 武将争覇
Sangoku Senki 2 BUSYOU SOUHA (LINK (http://203.69.115.76/www/chinese/product/sg2fly/japan/index.htm))
is this another upgrade to KoV2?

三国戦記2 群雄争覇 (LINK (http://203.69.115.76/www/chinese/product/sg2fly/china/index.htm))
Sangoku Senki 2 -Gun'yuu Souha-
is this another upgrade to KoV2?

新 三国戦記 七星転生
Shin Sangoku Senki -Shichisei Tensei-
Knights of Valour: The Seven Spirits
this latest installment is for Sammy's Atomiswave hardware, not PGM, but I included it here for completeness' sake

IGS' website lists 3 different subtitles for what appear to be different upgrades to KoV2. Can someone explain their Chinese pronunciations? In Japanese, they would be "Hiryuu Zaiten," "Bushou Souha" (rendered as BUSYOU SOUHA on the game's title screen) and "Gun'yuu Souha." I've seen an auction for a Japanese edition of BUSYOU SOUHA, so I know it was released in Japan under that title. I'm still trying to confirm whether or not "Hiryuu Zaiten / NINE DRAGONS" and "Gun'yuu Souha" had Japanese releases. I also need to know if "BUSYOU SOUHA" and "Gun'yuu Souha" had English-language releases -- if so, what were the English titles for them? Are Hiryuu Zaiten, Bushou Souha, and Gun'yuu Souha upgrades to the original SS2 / KoV2?

Or are Hiryuu Zaiten, Bushou Souha, and Gun'yuu Souha all the same game -- a single upgrade to SS2 / KoV2, but with 3 different secondary titles for 3 different languages? Upon closer examination, I've noticed a consistent difference in the way IGS' website URLs seem to differentiate between the Cantonese and Mandarin pages. On the frontpage (www.igs.com.tw) the 2 leftmost links go to the 2 different Chinese language pages (can someone tell me which one is Cantonese and which one is Mandarin?). The first language's KoV URLs tend to contain the word "chinese," while the second language's KoV URLs contain the word "china." This difference can be seen in the URLs for the Hiryuu Zaiten and Gun'yuu Souha pages. The Bushou Souha page, however, is only available in Japanese, even when accessed via either of the 2 Chinese sections. All this leads me to suspect that these 3 different subtitles may represent the same game (an upgrade to SS2 / KoV2), with Bushou Souha being the Japanese-language version, Hiryuu Zaiten being one of the Chinese-language versions, and Gun'yuu Souha being the other Chinese-language version. Can anyone confirm this suspicion?

The Korean-language portion of IGS' website would seem to indicate that at least some of the Sangoku Senki games have been released in Korea, but since I know nothing of the Korean language, I can't follow this up with my own research. Are there any folks here who can confirm whether or not the KoV series has been released in Korean? Have all the titles been released in Korean, or only a few -- if so, which ones? How are the titles pronounced in Korean? If you have the ability to enter Korean text in your reply, could you please include the titles written in Korean. I can't read Korean, but my computer can display Korean text and I'd like to be able to cut'n'paste the Korean titles alongside the Chinese, Japanese, and English titles for each game.

I know that xtoo_short20x posted a thread on this topic on 05/08/2004 (http://www.neo-geo.com/forums/showthread.php?t=90222), but the Hiryuu Zaiten / Bushou Souha / Gun'yuu Souha issue didn't get addressed there. Just hoping to get some clarification on this. Thanks in advance for your help!

I owned Dragon World 2 a rather craptacular Shanghai rip-off and that's it.

Interesting thread.
I think the PGM is a good system, pretty fun games. Although they feel like
lost neogeo titles, which is not a bad thing. At least they're in hardcore 2D.

Anyway, I own the following:

1. English PGM Motherboard (Bought NEW)

2. Martial Masters - Full English Kit (Bought NEW)

3. Puzzle Star - Full English Kit (Bought NEW)

4. DoDonPachi II Bee Storm kit (Bought USED)

Now all three of my games play in English, but some of the flyers have
some Chinese writings on them, but mostly English...

Chris, why not make a full list of all the games available for the system?

I intend to go after a full PGM collection, but my road will be full with obstacles,
as I wished to seek full kits only, of course loose carts can do while I find
full beautiful kits.

Also include Ketsui and ESPGaluda, as they're based on the PGM hardware,
just in different PCB format, instead of cart.

Here are some pics of those kits:

Yeah, I have a PGM and a small collection (so far a puzzle game and DFront kits).

Really like the system, funny how people diss it but really rate the dedicated games from Cave.

System16 has info on the games.
There are 5 KOV games on the system, 3 variations of KOV (9D is the best) and 2 of KOV2. I remember a few threads about it on here some time ago. You should start by pulling that stuff together.

This system looks very interesting, it has what I would like to be made for the Atomiswave. Most likely I will buy one in the future.

Can somebody please tell me how much can I expect to pay for a motherboard and some loose carts?

An arcade in So. Cal, well the old Golf Land and now Camelot, has PGM games. They've had Martial Masters, KOV games, and Demon Front... probably others from time to time.

- Knights of Valour Super Heroes (for use in Hong Kong only)
- Knights of Valour 2 Nine Dragons (for use in Hong Kong only)

And yes, I'd also be very interested in any info concerning Killing Blade ...

No problem!

1: I don't speak Korean, and usually I prefer Japanese versions, but a $50 bucks, I wasn't going to complain!

2: The only difference Between the Japanese and US Demon front is the text and title screen.

3: Seven Spirits: I really dig the game, and I love the sprites-against-Poloygon Background style that they choose to use. The Combat system is a bit simplified, and there are some very nice additions like a rage meter that makes you invinceable, and lets you do "arts" (super moves) till the meter runs out. It's very solid, with branching paths and character specific levels. The music is decent, and the SFX are wonderful, with plenty of bass for the beefy hits.

One other thing: The game is BALLS HARD on default. Much harder than the PGM versions. Also, the game isn't as long as the other KOV games. That can be a good thing though: KOV was 1 Hr and 35 Min when I timed it! Also, like the other KOV games, you cannot grapple, which I wish you could. :crying:

Over-all, it's a good Beat-em-up. I still dig Demolish fist more, but it's totally worth the price!

Chris, why not make a full list of all the games available for the system?
I plan to do so. In the meantime, I wanted to start by getting things straight in my head re: the KoV series, and by identifying the PGM owners on this board.

Yeah, I have a PGM and a small collection (so far a puzzle game and DFront kits).
Which puzzle game do you have, Ill6? and which language-version(s) are your games?

There are 5 KOV games on the system, 3 variations of KOV (9D is the best) and 2 of KOV2.
So, to your knowledge, there are 3 editions of KoV1:
Knights of Valour
Knights of Valour PLUS
Knights of Valour SUPER HEROES

and 2 editions of KoV2:
Knights of Valour 2
Knights of Valour 2 NINE DRAGONS

So, that would mean that the alternate KoV2 "sub-titles" I mentioned at the start of this thread ("Bushou Souha," "Gun'yuu Souha," and "Hiryuu Zaiten") are the same game as KoV2:9D, just with different "sub-titles" for different regions of release?

@The Chief: I've added your name to the owners' list; please let us know which language-versions you own

Thought i would bump the thread and give you my opinion on KOV2 :D

Its pretty good! Not as good as Super Heroes but still damn good! The first thing i noticed is the chracters are smaller, now i don't know if they are smaller sprites or its zoomed out because there are actually more enemies.Still it looks gorgeous as ever all chracters animated very very well and some outstanding BG's remind me alot of the MM BG's which of course are like LB/LB2's BG's so its all good!

Again multiple routes are with us and some are super sneaky this time, very hard to find and certain ones can be only opened in certain times its very tricky but all adds to longevity of the game. Items are galore as always with many armours, weapons, throwables and magic availible again, from the old bomb and spike ball to new stuff like healing herbs and Morale boosters.

Control is tight as ever with every charcter playing very different, the only thing i don't really like is the Special move system which this time is done by selecting it in your Item menu and pressing D to activate, although they can be done with commands like KOVSH it just dose'nt feel as easy and combos don't flow well for me at all. This seems to have been fixed in 9D which is the only one i have found a FAQ for, infact alot seems to have changed between 2 and 9D but then again alot happened between KOV and SH.

All in all i am happy with it, very happy actually! The one thing that does annoy me is i bought the Chinese version and tbh i would love the english version but then again i did get a good price and PGM games aint the easiest to get!

So yes its worth picking up but if i had the choice i would have definately picked up 9D instead it looks like its what SH was to the original KOV.

Hehe... I must have turned up in the REALLY old searches, but I still have my board. I have an English Martial Masters cart, English Bee Storm, and a KOVSH in some Asian language that I've been putting off getting rid of forever.

I'd really like a quality KOV release like either 9D or Gladiator, but I hate the prices on them and contacting IGS regarding direct sales is a nightmare.

There is no such thing as Oriental legends or Killing Blade in English version cartridge. This is fact. Killing blade to me reminds me of ninja masters and fatal fury special ...mixed all up graphx wise, gameplay is martial masters and kabuki klash stirred up. It is actually a pretty good game, but seems very dated. Also the original Oriental Legends differs quite a bit from its sequel OL Super. If you like either one you will enjoy the other also, theres alot more difference between them than lets say ms2 and msx. I need Key locations in demon front! If someone has any.

But I just bought a whole pgm collection consisiting of almost every game (no gladiator though :(). However, Killing Blade is in it!!!

I haven't played any yet, as I am still waiting on a supergun. I was promised one ages ago, but am still waiting for it..... and I can't wait to play those games...

I just love the look of them. And the whole thing being like the NEO will make me love it even more!!! I am also planning on building a consolised version with 4 joystick ports (somehow bulding the 4 player cable in...sure its possible). Of course I will need help to build this...by the master supergoose :D

Anyways, I will let you all know once I get the supergun and the games. I will let you know about killing blade!! I have no idea what to expect as I have never seen any of it. Its so hard to get info on those games on the net.

Martial Masters on the other hand looks awesome!! I love that SFAlpha look!! Prolly as close to having an arcade as I will ever get (excluding my consolised 4 slot :D).

Anyways, we should keep this thread alive. right....enough for now ;)

I played Martial Masters at the weekend in Casino arcade in London.

It was pretty good - although I am a novice at fighting games so its hard for me to say definitivley. The graphics were nice and the characters quite zany, there seemed to be a slight Guilty Gear influence in some of the characters like Scorpian and Monkey Boy.

Liked Drunken Master.

If you have any doubles by the way once you get your collection be sure to drop me a line!

Yea I have...
PGM MOBO
KOV
Martial Masters
Demon Front

I also have the 4 player cable to link it to another cab.

I want more games but nobody wants to come off them, and I don't blame them.

Just picked up a PGM board with KOV and Demon Front. Nice stuff!

I have a question though - which dip setting enables free play, if any? I was searching for it, but couldn't find anything definite.

They've been sitting here for a month now and I still don't have a supergun.

All in the name of providing you guys with info on Killing Blade etc of course :D

OK, I just received the PGM mobo with Demon Front and the KoV cart should be here next week. However I'm having trouble with the sound, let's see if any of you PGM owners that don't visit the Tech forum (http://www.neo-geo.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1283655) can help me:

I used it with my usual supergun. Graphics were OK, but I couldn't listen anything. All the boards I have tried in that supergun has worked OK so far, with the exception of the MGCD, which didn't have sound, either (but it had it in a cab I tried it into). My supergun has a mono/stereo switch but it didn't work either way. I have sound connected in the DIP switches too.

I also tried it with a VHSgun made by supergoose79, and this time the sound worked, but quite weak (had to turn the mobo volume to maximum, and still increase the volume level of my speakers). In adition, it doesn't seem "right" to me, I don't know how to explain it, either the PGM sound sucks or there's something wrong.

Has anybody experienced this? Any help? Thanks.

EDIT: I "do" get sound from the first supergun too, but so weak that I have to tune the volume to the max, so the sound can be barely heard as there's a big interference noise too.

I love the PGM!! KOV games are shit hot. But I dunno which is which...I need someone to host a picture of all my games and then maybe you guys can help me figure out which is which game.
Killing Blade is cool. Reminds me of Breakers for the Geo. Combos etc are great! Looks dated tho but plays great! Martial Masters is sweet!! And I love my final fight style games. So lots of play time for me this week. I shall then post more once I know more.

Oh, demon front also rocks. My bro even figured out how to play Majong...just so he can see the naked ladies...some sort of strip majong :D

Anyways, I shall post more soon

I recently Picked up a PGM and DEMON FRONT....
The first time I hooked it up to my Candy cab I basically ran through the game playing a two player game with a friend.
He had to leave but upon seeing this game on screen decided to check it out first...So we played it to the end.
I honesty had the volume up too high and didn't know(stupid me) that the adjustment was in the side of the motherboard.
So my focus was on that high volume(worrying the speaker was going to blow) instead of getting into the game...But we finished it and for what that was worth it Rocked!!..My friend loves it...

I'd say in game length it's about the same as the Metal Slugs and IMO resembles Metal Slug.

Demon Front is a great game that I'd recommend....and I love the compact design of the PGM motherboard.

Demon front all the way through is almost an hours worth of time, especially if you try to get ALL the body parts to fight the true last boss. Plus it's fun to mix and match certian organs to see what kind of bosses you can fight at the end! So far, I have found 4 variations besides the true last boss.

You need to locate and un-lock the bodie parts thoughout the levels. You first need to find the key, then the body part which will be locked in a glass case, then you will un-lock the body part. The boss variations depend on which parts you find and un-lock. It's not enough to just find them.

Right folks, as I hardly ever have time to do this stuff, I have decided to list all the games that I will sell just now here. Prices are in pounds sterling as that is what I am after. Paypal is the way to go. Prices are final and include shipping!! So the price you see is what you need to paypal me.
Some games are on hold for some members that have PM'd me. Unfortunately I didn't have time to PM everyone back...sorry. So I keep em on hold with the price listed. If you like it, then PM me and we sort it out.
Hope thats ok. So here goes:

Brand New PGM motherboard with instructions (only used once for testing!!) £130
Bee Storm (english with marquee, poster and cab sticker) £105
Martial Masters (english with cab moves sticker, dip sheet, two mini posters) £90
Oriental Legends (jap) £65
Oriental Legends Super (jap) £80
Killing Blade (jap) £110
Photo Y 2 K (jap) £55
Demon front (English) £95
Dragon World Pretty Chance (english) £65
KOV (english) £65
KOV (jap with cba move sticker, dip sheet, 2 mini posters) £70
KOV 2 (jap) £90
KOV Plus (jap) £75
KOV 9 Dragons (jap with 3 move cab stickers, dip sheet and very big cardboard poster) £120

KOV 9 Dragons is that. However, it might be a different KOV..I can't make it out. It says 'BUSYOU SOUHA' in the title. I reckon its the last one as it has the most moves and characters. But please lMK if this referes to a different KOV.
With 'move cab stickers' I refer to the long thin stickers that are also very common with MVS kits. The long stickers that go on the cab...know what I mean ??
Sorry there is no pix, but I do not have a camera. I will have one hopefully by X-mas. But trust me, I am a good guy and will happily help to resolve anything!!

Thats all for now. There is plenty more games coming, but for now this is it. I know the prices are high, but not really that bad if you consider no paypal charges and shipping is included. Plus, you can hardly find those games anywhere else and I paid a cow for them myself.
So hope that is all good, and look forward to hear from you guys ;)

Aaaargh! I can't believe I've managed to miss this thread considering how long I've had my PGM stuff for. I absolutely love my Polygame master, gutsy hardware, polished aesthetics on the MoBo and hey...it’s got bright red carts!!! :buttrock:

Its just so gad damn manly!

I currently have (and adore!)

Demon Front
The Gladiator
KOV - Super Heroes

Oh, and since someone mentioned earlier that some recent Cave shooters use the same hardware. I have “ESPGALUDA”!!!! My god that game rocks! If you haven't ever played this and love a good shmup than do yourself a favour and get your hands on it...NOW!

I get a huge kick out of the Knight of Valour series and plan to grab the rest of them as soon as I'm able. Maybe “DoDonpachi II - Bee Storm” too, but I've heard mixed impressions of this title and as I'm a Cave purist and have the predecessor “DoDonpachi" I'm erring on the side of caution. Anyone care to put my mind at ease by telling me it freakin rocks? Well either that or just confirm that it’s not as good as the previous Cave produced game and it’s an impostor to the series... :p

Anyway, cheers to all the PGM fans out there, rock on! :loco:

i guess this post goes here just as much as anywhere else.

i am trying to run my pgm through a supergun and then run the s-video to a pc capture card to record videos. i have successfully recorded several videos with the same supergun (with a neo mv-1fz mobo) and the color comes out fine. same thing if i hook up a console like the xbox. but when i hook up the pgm, there is no color on the captured video at all.

these clips are very small, just to get an idea what i'm talking about (grab xvid codec if you can't see the vids):

http://kafuin.net/downloads/xbox.avi
http://kafuin.net/downloads/pgm.avi

any idea what is different about the signal outputted by the pgm that causes this?

I was seriously looking into getting a PGM MoBo to consolize. I'm interested in Demon Front, DoDonpachi: Bee Storm, both Knights of Valours and The Gladiator.

I'd also like to find out if Oriental Legend 1 & 2 are any good and if Killing Blade is another Scrolling Beat 'em Up, or a 1on1 fighter?

It's just a shame that the three shmups I'd really like (DDP: Dai-Ou-Jou, Espgaluda & Ketsui) are PGM Single Boards.

Hello to everybody,

I am just working on a complete walkthrough for the game "Knights of Valour 2 - 9 Dragons". Since I have only the original korean version I do not understand the story of that game, which on the other hand would like to include in my handout. So, maybe someone can understand chinese and could help me in translating some stages in the game or maybe someone has a english version and could provide me a link via PM.

Anyway, I uploaded the screenshots to this place :

Unfortunatly, even in english version, the first lines of the story (when your character riding an horse) are not translated.

For the rest of the game, I suggest you to follow this video (http://v.youku.com/v_show/id_XMTM5MjQ1MjQ=.html):

It's the wholegame with Diaochan. It's only the first Knights of Valour 2 (not the nine dragons) but I can confirm that, for scenes that are common to both games, history is the same.

Here is what your waiting for: a complete walkthrough with ZaoYun in an English kov nine dragons (http://v.youku.com/v_show/id_XMTM4MzE0MzY=.html)

(note that the player choose to fight CaoCao, so you will not have the Sun Quan story because one must choose one or the other necessarily)

I think it exists as both (I have the cart). Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

Yeah most games exist in both formats. All of the Cave/PGM games are on unified PCBs.

I've always wanted a PGM, but I've found the cost to be prohibitive for a thrifty Neo collector like me.

It does exist as both. There are 2 different known cart revisions (1.02 and 1.05), as well as the PCB version (1.1). I previously had a PCB and a 1.05 cart, and I couldn't tell the difference between the 2. Bug fixes posibly, but I kept the cart due to space issues. Much easier to keep a cart around than a board.

Aside from Demon Front, I have Knights of Valour and 1 MB here. Demon Front definitely gets more play out of the 2. I will pick up more games over time for it, though I have had it for several months now. Games don't pop up often enough for it.
