RBFF is probably the best playing of the three... doesn't look great, but the breakable corners make for a different game. Even if you are losing you can setup a trap, break the walls and then lure people into the areas. I love it when this backfires and you setup up a big combo only to have the computer line shift... hehe, and you go flying off the edge... karma. Love the game, great purchase.

RBS is my favourite out of the four games (including FF3). I especially like playing with Terry. he has some neat combos. I also like the BGs in that game, though I think there should some more of them.

but RBS is all about its gameplay. highly recommended.

good title to get your hands on kernow!

the combo system is fairly easy to get into and the ending sequences with Geese are memorable...

and like many have said, the addition of the "Out of Bounds" makes for some very interesting situations, sometimes in your favor and sometimes not...
;)

and SNK put some effort to insert humor into those Out of Bounds scenarios which can be real entertaining to watch for...LWK has one of the funnier examples posted on his site:

The ring outs are so well done, from the different subway cars you can push people into... the different water animations (I love it when you both ring out and are left swimming in the water... very classy), the different people in the elevators... then there is the 2nd to last stage... GOD DAMN. So much love went into that! I don't want to ruin the surprise, but knock over the light fixture on the right side before the last round and watch what happens on the following round. Love it. Those little touches make this game special, not to mention the play is rock solid.

RB1 is my favorite RB game. I own all 3 of them, but after spending many hours with the series, I think part one is the best.

It's like a nice mix between old school feeling and newer style combo-ing. Beside that it has quite a lot of detail and nice snk touches like rdifferent ringouts for different characters.

Lovely game, might take you a while to REALLY get into.

If you're looking for some cheap Real Bout... RB Special is on the Sega Saturn.

RB1 is pretty good... but outdated by the last two.

A cool thing about RB1 is you get to see Blue Mary's bare boobies. :D

All 3 games have their points...my favorite fluctuates between RB1 and RB2. RB1 is in no way dated by the other two games. It's just a slightly different engine. In fact, if it had the rest of RB2's roster, I think it might be my clear favorite. 3 planes may be a bit ambitious, but it works better here than in FF3. Aesthetically, RBFF is by far the best of the Real Bouts, IMO. Much of the character sprites and music from FF3, which is a good thing. Great backgrounds, as others have mentioned. Best endings of the series (if you care about such things), particularly Terry and Andy's. I remember yelling along with Terry the first time I played, so many years ago. All around, one of the best fighters ever made on the Neo.

Good to hear that you like the game.

Start with the custom string combos for every chara, I've posted the list in the other RBFF thread. If you leave out the last command of those combos, you can continue into many specials and even supers. As mentioned before, RBFF is very string-combo dependend but overall timing is quite relaxed except for a few Geese combos 'n stuff.

There also are some very cool line sway combos, they mostly go like this: 2/3-hit string -> attack that knocks opp. to other plane -> s/cD (takes opp. back to your plane) -> special or super. Looks very nice, specially if you do it with Yama and finish your opp. with one of his cool DMs... badass.

Also check out Marc O'Neill's (FLEA) RBFF faq, it's on Gamefaqs and definitely one of the best I've found for the game so far.

This game is great - I am loving its presentation

getting into it has been a bit hard for me anyway, but I ripped up today with geese, I love the combo system.

And I saw the subway train bit.. wow, wouldn't see that on a KOF stage!

I can see why theres only 4 (5) stages

but .. masterpiece.. won't be putting this down in a hurry :)

I love the gangsta geese cutscenes on one player mode too, man .. this certainly is my favourite fatal fury at present. it has the hwan brothers and motw music too!

man..

uhm

WTF? (you all know this I guess :( but)

I was playing on the bridge stage as geese, and caused a ringout on the right hand side, using my power charge thing, anyway, I ended up breaking the side and both of us falling out, yet I had more momentum and carried on going into the other 'bit of bridge' at the further right, I thought I'd just fall down after hitting it, but NO.. I broke through that too, and jumped over the water basically breaking two bits of bridge and landing on dry ground with the spectators

I was fucking amazed, and in love.

I'm sure I'll end up playing rb2 sometime, but no plane switch? hmm I'm getting used to it too!

are the backgrounds still destroyable?

bgs destroyable = no
plane switching = yes on most stages
pain in the ass one hit ring outs after the edges have been destroyed in the 2nd/3rd round = no :)

good game though. sokaku has like 10 moves.

I just think there's more Garou in rbff than rb2... I've been playing them a lot lately, and tho I have more fun with rb2 than I used to (thanks to your rb2 thread, beelze), I still come back to rbff.

Both are great in their own way.

I like how RBFF has the MOTW music , or vice versa obviously, and the hwan brothers are even in it.

plus, geese is the most gangsta motherfucker boss ever made, especially in this game when you see him getting groomed and drinking coffee/smoking a cigar at the end,

class all the way through.

having trouble using yamazaki well though - shame he's one of my fave chars :(

guard break / fast move thing (:spock: stoned hah) is good too

@beelze, I meant "Garou" as in "Fatal Fury", I'm used to call the series "Garou series", not talking about MotW in particular here, I think there are more Fatal Fury elements in rbff than in MotW... just to clear things up. You're right, MotW can be a lil' blunt at times. It's not that the engine itself would be bad, but many players don't even bother with advanced stuff like Feints or JD. I've heard of tournament-level MotW players who very rarely use JD, only if it leads to a safe counter, while in rbff, you simply have to learn strings, line sway attacks and how to defend against them, combos and counters, otherwise you can't even beat the CPU on lvl 4, let alone a seasoned rbff player.

The MotW engine should have been a more stringent, specially the damage of some normals or strings should have been cut down in order to increase the importance of some of the finer things in its engine.

@kern, yeah, it's quick, needs very fast reaction specially if you want to counter with an H power move or on wakeup. Btw, try some of Geese's S/P power combos, 3-hit string into special into line sway, followed by sD into Raging Storm... classic...

My fave characters are Andy, Geese, Duck and Joe, with some Terry and Franco Bash thrown in when I'm in the mood. Duck and Andy are my main guys, tho.

About Yama, one or two of his moves take slightly more time to come out, and the range of his snake tamers is different, as well as his overall speed and some move commands (f,db,f instead of dp for his Judging Dagger, etc.). Don't play him too KoF-ish/aggressive at first and try to land his custom string if you're having trouble dishing out enough damage, it's sA -> sC -> sC -> f+C, simple and effective.

He seems to be stronger than in other games if you keep your opps. at mid-range (2 chara lengths) and apply some hit-and-run, followed by a Sadomaso trap, etc.

One more thing about his snake tamers, they are no safe and easy anti-airs as in KoF because you have to add in another uf stick move for that, you'd better off with his db+A uppercut here. Btw., the snake tamers can be cancelled while charging them by tapping A, some of those awfully difficult snake tamer cancel combos work in RBFF as well.
