World Heroes 2 was my very first AES game back when it was released. 2 weeks later we bought an additional joystick so that my brother and I could enjoy some 2P greatness. fond memories.

Fuuma:

jump B ..... keep tabbing A ..... far B ..... (enemy gets dizzy).....
jump B ..... keep tabbing A ..... far B ..... (enemy is dead)

World Heroes 2 is the only I've ever owned (and still own) and put real time into. I've never played more than a handful of games of Jet at the local Japanese market, and I never even got to try Perfect, so I should remove myself from voting.

But I won't.

I vote for...World Heroes 2, the last instalment with the infamous Death Match Mode that made my roommate almost throw one of the old-style sticks, and the introduction of my favorite World Hero: Ryoko (who never got added to that poll, dang it). Yatta ne (as she spins).

I've played them all now and I can safely say that Perfect is the best of the series, obviously enough. The backgrounds are reused are bear no relation to the characters which really stinks, plus I reckon they're badly designed anyway. WH2 beats pefect in this area.

Everthings else in Perfect is sweet, the character selection, the animation, the mechanics etc. The last boss is as bad as ever but WH bosses have always been shit. It looks like Neo Dio was designed by a retard.

Janne and Dragon are my favourate characters and look better than ever in WHP.

Four points:

Firstly: I have the sinking feeling that anyone who would respond to a WH thread has already responded (except for Takumaji and Steve). :crying:

Secondly: Due to renewed interest in the series, I checked our FAQ section... and found we don't have any FAQs on any games in the WH series. Not one. WTF? At least we have a movelist for GanGan, but still...

Thirdly: after reluctantly going to gamefaqs.com for info on World Heroes Perfect, I was surprised to learn a few things about the game. I'd known it was a 3 punches/3 kicks game, but had no idea it had guard crushing moves, air blocks you can counter after, blocking-> f+A counters like in FF, and other stuff... WH2 was fun to goof around on with friends, but this sounds almost like a legitimate fighter... Can anyone comment on the gameplay of Perfect as it compares to others? Thanks.

Lastly: Dio's character design always looked to me like Baoh (a japanese comic character from the creator of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Araki; one of my favorite artists), right down to that hole in the middle of his forehead, extending hair, and blades that pop from his arms. So I always liked that design.

I demand that an additional choice be made available:

The last World Heroes game I played made me impotent.

But seriously, I just can't get into this series no matter how hard I try. I just feel like I'm wasting time when I could be playing Sam Sho 2 or something.

I remember playing WH2 a few times at an arcade. At the time I thought it sucked. But seeing how it's a dirt cheap cart. I might pick it up sometime soon.

Thanks, my friend!

You know me guys, I hardly let a chance pass to talk about WH, and be it just to remind you that the Neo has more to offer than KoF, Samsho and Garou...

My fave WH games are WH2 and 2Jet, but like Southtownkid, I voted for WH2 because I also madly love the Death Matches. Most ppl rate WH and its sequels as Street Fighter rip offs, and indeed there's a similarity between the two - they're both 2D fighting games... other than that, the engines differ in almost every aspect.

The first WH - I'll have to admit that there's a bit of nostalgia kicking in here, but I still play the game every other week or so. It's one of the few Neo games that you can still play at two old-school downtown arcades 'round here, and if you ask the owner why there's no KoF, Slug or Garou but a rotten old ADK fighter, he will tell you that the games still get him money after all these years, that's why he wouldn't even think of removing them... ...heh, sure thing, I guess I'm responsible for more than 20% of his WH earnings so I've told him to fukn ask me before kicking them out! :)

WH1 and 2 are "pure" games. All the games have to offer is right there under your hands, there's no hidden stuff, overly fancy endings or anything, just some sort of chopped engine that is very simple yet interesting enough to make it strangely addictive. There are features like the tap/hold button system that I really like, and some of the characters are kinda cool.

Just take Rasputin for example - yep, his rose-totin' russian-gay-dance fighting style looks ridiculous next to most other SNK or even ADK fighter characters, but his design really is something special and unique. I remember that when WH2Jet came out, the first thing most ppl wanted to know was wether Ras got some new and funny supers...

There's more, tho; for ex. you can do some really nifty stuff with Fuuma - you won't find a lot of combo faqs that go into detail about his strange "combos" and tricks, and don't ever try to find a vid, you'll browse yer ass off... because it looks so blunt and simplistic, nobody cared about writing a faq except for some move lists or a short explanation of the game basics, yet there's more than just tap-tap-hold, the game has some quirks that make it what it is, a non-serious fun fighter. And that's cool in my book.

My fave charas are Brocken, who was the first WH chara I chose, then Fuuma, Cap. Kidd and Dragon.

WH2Jet I like mainly for the dashing, it sort of breathed new life into the WH formula because gameplay was much faster now. The team battle thing also was cool, and I remember that I immediately fell in love with the Berlin stage, I always thought that Oberstleutnant Brocken should have a decent home!

Needless to say that I also like WHP to some extend... well, it's a great game, but when it came out, I was slightly disappointed about the new gameplay elements and the lack of some of the older ones. For most gamers, WHP is the only WH game worth mentioning because ADK, with the help of some SNK lads, worked hard in pushing the series a few steps forward in terms of engine depth and playability, but for me, the absence of some dear old WH oddities like the Death Matches or certain trick combos made me shun WHP for quite a while after my first game tests, months later I gave it another chance and eventually learned to like it, but I can't help myself, the old WH's are still my true love.

That's like saying you shouldn't watch a mindless action movie ever in your life, because you could be using the time to watch Godfather 2 yet again. Take a break once in a while...

@Takumaji: Sorry to hear you didn't have more to say about WHPerfect... I've been playing WH2 again a lot the last couple weeks, and after reading a FAQ along with Kaz and Steve's reviews (I know Steve is not exactly unbiased when it comes to WH), and a bunch of screenshots, I decided to buy the MVS from Neo Bomber Man. I don't know why I've been so much in the mode of this series lately, but I can't wait for it to arrive. How far do Perfect's tweaks take it towards being a more serious fighter? Are they mostly cosmetic, or do they add to the gameplay?

Don't get me wrong, taken for itself, WHP is a really cool game that I hold in high regard, but there are so many WH-typical things missing that for me, it's not a real WH game anymore... prolly that's why ppl prefer WHP over the prequels.

I had similar thoughts when SNK released Slug 3. I immediately loved the graphical detail and the great music and artwork, but after a while I wasn't so euphoric anymore... I badly missed the WW2 parody Slug feeling of Slug 1 and 2, which are my fave games of the series. That doesn't mean I don't like Slug 3, but for different reasons than 1 or 2.

There are some great WHP faqs out there but only a handful covering the other WH games. Years ago a friend of mine mailed me a translation of a french WH2 faq, and that's the only doc I have about it except for random bits of info I've cut&pasted from bbs threads and stuff like that.

I actually thought about doing a writeup on these games but this project has no priority because of low public demand... :)

About the WHP engine, the flow of the game is much more controllable for ppl used to Garou or KoF engines, the commands have been streamlined (dp instead of f,db,df for an uppercut, etc.). WHP has a Samsho-style button layout with three punch and kick strenghts and up to four different taunts per chara.

DMs have been added, and a special attack type with individual moves for each chara done by pressing (f/b/d+)ABC, this is the coolest addition to WHP imo.

However, you will see the biggest differences in actual gameplay, some ppl say it plays less stiff and it's easier to pull off specials. There's also the d+BC fake dizzy mode of WH2Jet and the clashes if your opp. hits you with a move of the same trype/strength as yours.

Another detail I don't dig is the tick/block damage which has been introduced in WH2Jet but they made it worse in WHP, some DMs simply tick too much and this made ppl throw them out left and right - tick damage is okay in fighters focussing on specials and DM combos like the KoF series, but IMO they shouldn't have added this to a once strings-dominated WH.

Then there's the missing tap/hold system and counter-throws. God knows why they have been taken out (they're not in 2Jet as well)... guess when ADK were about to un-fuck the cheesy throws of WH1 and 2 for the new WH2Jet and WHP, they cut out a lil' too much.

Anyway, good to see there still are ppl who are into these games.... the WH series is no KoF or Samsho, but IMO it deserves to be played because it's fun, plain and simple.

No reversible throws in Jet or Perfect...? That was one of my favorite features, along with Death Match, in WH2. Can you still reverse projectiles like a ping pong match? I guess I was hoping for WH2 a bit speeded up, with air blocks, block->f+A counters, dashing and DMs, rather than a whole new game. Hopefully, it still retains the series' atmosphere.

The way you describe Perfect's changes causing it to be prefered by more people, but making it seem like less of a WH game, mirrors my feelings toward Mark of the Wolves...

If you ever do decide to do some FAQs (or translate the translated French FAQ), I know there will be at least a few people waiting for them. I don't think the World Heroes games have been underrated to the level FF3 has, but they've definitely been a bit overlooked.

I see what you're saying, but the difference is that mindless aciton movies make me laugh, while playing World Heroes only pisses me off. :(

World Heroes is an acquired taste, I think. It's a quirky (if uninspired) fighting game with strange characters and questionable balance. But it WAS a Neo Geo staple back when it was first released, and EVERY arcade had it. The nostalgia value is high for the people that played it back then, but for those that didn't...well, there's not much substance.

Since I am one of those people that grew up with the games in the arcades, and now that I own all four of them, I can say that Perfect is the best one. Simply because they did away with that HORRENDOUS control scheme that had you holding the A or B buttons down for a fierce attack...ugh.

I just wish that Neo Dio didn't come out halfway through your fight with Zeus and take him out. Every time I see that scene, I can't help but think,"Bullshit, Zeus would CREAM Neo Dio!"

World Heroes Perfect has some ugly recycled sprites and annoying music, but it's still one of the best fighting games on the Neogeo.

If you like good fighting games, it has a whole bunch of great gameplay to offer. That's not even counting the humor and the crazy characters, which are hilarious.

This is like asking "what's your favorite type of cancer".

I picked Perfect because it has the six levels of strength for moves, like SF or SS. They all suck, but Perfect sucks the least, IMHO.

Lord knows I hate jumping the band wagon, but I agree its gotta be WH2. I am challenging this with WH2J though. I had some matches with a friend that brings this dead close.

I remember playing WH1 and WH2 while working at Babbages. We got to take home games to try out, and for me being the ONLY NEO owner the store ever had it was a divine treat to try out AES homecarts.

Anyway I remember WH1 really sucking, with lame artwork and wierd looking characters in costumes.

WH2 however... I actually contemplated on buying back then. Deathmatch while I don't remember how it played, is a cool alternative. And the one big thing I remember about the game is the BGM on the level that belongs to that Aztec/African dude with the huge mask... I really dig that music... the fidelity of it was really good.

Me thinks I should track down WH2... Damn these threads always do this.

I didn't vote though, b/c I never played WHJ and WHP.

I almost voted in the last one for teh lol.

I liked the WH1, the sequels have lost the magic, and I wasn't able to be a killa like I was at WH1. It was a SF2 killer for me that time, since I didn't stand a chance against anyone at SF2 that time :(

And the cab wasn't crowded like SF2 was.

World Heroes 2 remains the best overall package of the bunch. Perfect is simply too un-WH-like. I have said it enough times in plenty of threads. What I can't stand most is how small the characters are and how light all their hits seem with the totally shitty SFX. Just like in KOF '95. The light-sounding hits do nothing compared to those slapping Fierce punches in Hyper Fighting for example. 2's dedicated backgrounds, awesome music, deathmatches and slow, heavy-hitting gameplay along with extremely yet unoffensively coloured everything really do a lot to polish the game up.

The only thing that really bothered me was always having to face the new Heroes as your first 6 opponents. It really gets a bit annoying after a while.

I broke my first controller on Dio and even cracked my system. Not good memories, though the game on the whole even today is still quite an awesome little fighter.

Dang it, man, at least wait until the WHP cart you sold me arrives before you say this...! Just kidding ;) , I'm sure I'll like it anyway.

Heh, arriving just a scotch late at this party. JUST A LITTLE BIT. =D

Ahhh, the WH series.

Like Tak, my first ever character too was Brocken! Ahhhh the memories.

I voted for Perfect....

WH
I played it for the first time at some speciality game rental shop in California called GAME HUNTER. It was a small ass store with a kicking 16-bit rental selection, and in the entrance way, stood 1 or 2 arcades. After this, I played WH religiously at the local Chuck E. Cheeses and US Video (a very big mom and pop shop... usually mom and pop video stores are small as fuck but this was seriously... the equivalent size of a small Blockbuster) I grew up with the World Heroes. While WH is the least impressive of the series, its nostalgia factor is truly very cool for me.

WH2
Man I played this every time my dad took me to Safeway. Sometimes I dragged my dad to Safeway just so I could play it. The intro was kick ass! Captain Kidd was a seriously SICK character. I liked how most fighting sequels back then introduced 2 or 4 new characters in a sequel, while WH2 introduced SIX. Not 4. Not 2. But 6. That was majorly cool. WH2 ruled in terms of backgrounds and music (as someone mentioned, MUDMAN's stage in WH2 is one of the best of all time... SO ATMOSPHERIC) Man I remember drooling over WH vs. SF character "dream matches" in my head while I was at friends' houses. I was seriously hooked on to this game. And imagine my innocent surprise when I first saw the cabinet for WH2. I had NO clue there would be a part 2. One of the happiest days of my gaming life.

WH2Jet
Played this loads at local Golfland. I never could get past Captain Kidd. My best friend Nelson loved WH series as well. I still remember I loved WH soooo much, that I "turned" on my best friend. One GameFan issue printed a moves list for WH2JET and I refused to share it with Nelson because I wanted to be able to beat him in the game. HAHA. Jack and Ryofu were somewhat forgettable, but I remember EGM bitching about them being overpowered. (EGM awarded WH2Jet game of the month in ish #60... 10 years and 2 months ago... daaaaaamn)

WHP
Unfortunately I fell outta arcades in 1995, so I missed out on playing this. The only version of WHP I have played would be for the Saturn and my God did I ever play the shit outta the Saturn conversion, which some say is as good if not better than the arcade itself! The Saturn six face button layout works like GANGBUSTERS for WHP's new 6 button gameplay, a la Street Fighter. I agree the spirit is changed somewhat... I dun really feel "WH" to its purest when I play WHP, but for fast gameplay and whatnot, Perfect is easily the best of the series. I love Dio's redesign... especially in his golden hue. The HERO power bar (basically a super move bar) added "today" feel to the series, and the Desperation moves did as well. And the combo of a Desperation-HERO super is quite frankly... UBER AWESOME. If they only had individual backgrounds and death match as an option, WHP would be the end-all be-all WH game. Son Gohan was the only character added for a playable count of 19, the most in any WH game. Such an odd count... they should have introduced new characters... or at least stick Neo Geegus in there for the hell of it and bring the fighter count to an even 20.

Shame WH went gentle into that good night... seems like it was a different lifetime that I was a little kid giddily playing the latest World Heroes game in some rental shop, cheese aroma-filled arena, or my old best friend's house.

I even wrote a proposed WH3 review/speculation "fan story" on THIS VERY website. I still hold out small hope the Heroes will be revived some day... but if not... its OK. They served their time well by me. :)
