I am working on a portfolio for a 3d animation school. They don't have any portfolio requirements though, their course states that student should have strong photoshop skills. I just finished my first year of design, and I haven't got to much photoshop stuff done except this stuff

Photoshop people, harsh critiques please! My Interview is next week!

I would say that the top picture is the only one that shows any photoshop skills. Being able to use a filter is not a skill.

**edit** I missed the third picture- I think htat one show some skill too. **end edit**

When I look at portfolios for the game company I work at, I look for good painting technique and use of general tools. I also look for fundamental skills like drawing, composition, use of color and light, etc...

3-D animation usually requires strong texturing skills- that is, the ability to make an image that simulates a real life material, which is then applied to your 3-D image.

If I was the school then I would probably be looking for illustrations and game-style textures.

Hope this helps.

The girl on the far right is excellent and the one next to that is good. I like the hair on the first girl and the strong colours on the second one. Not sure about the second one itself though but im not an expert.

Suragu:

WHich game company do you work for? What's the best way to break into the game industry. I am trying to come up with a portfolio and taking 3D animation classes.

Do you have any advice for those such as myself and ParryHor?

ParryHor: The first pic of the girl looked really good. I think the last one was interesting too but I think that filter kinda makes it look gimmicky. I think it would be cooler not to use that filter...IMHO.

Very nice overall though.

Actually none of those except the last one uses filters. The last one was a drawing in pencil that was colored in pencil as well. I threw it in there because my portfolio is a little thin  . I just finished my first year in design, and most of the stuff I did in class was not the stuff I'd put in the portfolio (typography, layout, logo design, etc.). I'm really not interested in animation, I'm leaning more towards character design, and thats what I'm looking to excel at rendering, texture mapping....
I really need to get myself a tablet though, painting with mouse is aggravating :very_ang:

Good lord... you did all that w/o a tablet. I use a wacom tablet...the smaller one. Doesn't cost that much. You should look into getting one.

I was a design student awhile back, but like you I did all that typography, page layout, webdesign stuff and very little animation.

I'm planning to go back to school to learn some 3d apps. I'd rather work on modelling rather than animation though. I like building things, but I'm not a good animator but who knows, maybe i could learn to love it.

What school do you plan on going to?

I'm in Canada so we don't have many options, I'm going to DevStudios here in Edmonton. I only know of the Vancouver Film School and Sheridan College in Ontario that teach 3d exclusively. There are several designs schools here that do teach 3d animation, but they're too general. Dev is 8-10hrs a day for 8 months plus internship.

I'm going to take a Graphics Design course too... I just got accepted, but chances of finding a gaming job is quite intimidating though... It seems hard... I'm in Canada too... Vancouver.... I'm attending British Columbia Institute Of Technology... They have good co-ops and have ties with EA stationed here in Vancouver... But I know getting a job there won't be easy... *determined*
