Now I understand the hype  Started playing it around 10pm and just now turned it off ( it's 7am now ). Can't believe this game has been out for 10 years and tonight is the first time I've ever played it. Hands down the best fighting game I've ever played ( so far ).

I do have one gripe about it though. The music on Earthquake's stage. I prefered his music in SS1 ALOT more. Anyone else share this feeling ? Although I say the entire sound/BG theme of nicotine's stage alone more than makes up for that.

I second that...disssecting this game as you explore every nuance of gameplay is something that can eat up a TON of time, and you'll enjoy every minute of it...

I personally cannot get enough of it. I've had SS2 on my AES for almost a year, and I've played it just about every day. I recentley picked it up on Neo Geo CD as well (I'm a sucker for Arranged Soundtracks) and I have to say it's simpley beautiful. S-Video really does make a diffrence. Gaming perfection is SS2.

I remember someone here saying that SS2 was SNK's finest hour - and after playing it for about a year and half straight now, I must concur. Such a tight, solid engine, but still with so much room for variety and creativity - GMR wasn't kidding when the called this a top 5 fighter of all time.

Shit, I'm just getting into, IMO, obscure characters like Charlotte, Sieger, Nicotine, and Jubei. But the time you put in will well worth be the experience you get out of SS2.

Too bad it was only #3. I can't beleive VF4 beat it. What a bunch of crap. Even SF3 doesn't cut it as far as I stand.

VF4 and SF3 are both great games, but I'm with you. SF3 is a wonderful game from a technical standpoint, but then so is SS2, and SS2 murders it in the style department (particularly the backgrounds). Of course SS2 is a bit simpler, but I think that's a good thing - there's certainly no shortage of depth to the gameplay.

As far as VF4 goes, I don't really have the experience with it to make a general statement. But from what I've played, it just doesn't have the same tightness of response that games like SS2 have. To be fair, no 3d games do, IMO.

can someone here shed some light on SS2's gameplay? because I've never figured out how to play it.

I hear it has a deep gameplay engine and all, but all I do while playing is [jump A+B] to [standing/crouching A+B].

I used to play the game a lot with my brother. that was a long time ago. we liked the game mainly for it's style, but we never found the gameplay any special.

First of all, timing is very important, much more so than in other games. To be a good SS2 player, you have to be very patient and learn the effective distance and speed for all of your character's moves. Personally, I think SS2 has a really great combo engine that holds up wonderfully even after ten years. At certain points during attacking moves, you'll encounter a little bit of slowdown, allowing you to put together a nice combo without having to flip your fingers back and forth at light speed. That's not to say that the combos are easy, but with practice you can pull them off pretty consistently.

Also, I think SS2 was one of the first fighting games to have the "parry" move that you see being used so effectively in the Street Fighter 3 series. Blocking immediately before an opponent strikes will knock his/her weapon back and stun them momentarily, allowing you to get a free shot.

Anyway, just give it some time, explore the gameplay system, and be creative. I can see how it may come off as being simplistic at first, but believe me, there's plenty to love about this game. Just spend some time with it and you will be rewarded. ;)

thanks dude.

I noticed while playing, that you can dock if you tab down twice. also, if you press B+C, you will hop backward. are these moves any helpful? and are there any basic moves beside these?

uh and it will be helpful if you give me an example of a combo for Genjuro or Houhmaru.

haoh combos, dont know if they all work been a long time since i played this.

crossover j+AB, cB, df/hcf/rdp+BC ( very nice killer combo lots of damage)

j+AB, cAB, either dp+AB or dp+C or qcb+A

genjuro

jou can get sick damage if your jumping AB hits twice and folow it up with standing AB. at least 50% and stun.

from close he got cAB, sAB or cAB forgot.

also j+AB, sB, Super or dp+AB or qcb+S or qcf+S.

the thing is learn your enemies animation frames to execute moves on time during slowdowns and shit otherwise you slice right through them without hitting them ( damn i reall y hated this in SS2).

you got a lot more combos but it is easier to use AB at right time to get same amount damage as combo, perhaps even more. up close is where the light and medium buttons become important for combos and for poking use from distance.

Samsho 2 is an awesome Game, even if it´s old around 10 Years now...

If you´re really like that Game that much, save some money and buy yourself the 4th Part! It´s the highlight of the whole Series, believe me... ;)

I must be the only one who don't think SamSho 2 is the end all.
I thnk it's A pretty good game, But in the end it really does not do much for me.
I'd honestly rather play 3 (or if my friends have their way 4) over any of them. :mr_t:

You're not alone. 3 and 4 have a better control scheme, with 3 slash attacks and 1 kick. Simpler and more to the spirit of the Samurai's.

And the added damage of SS3 makes the timing and blocking even more important. I love the fact that a match can be over in 3 blows.
