I'm new to making inserts, but am trying to model after the classic-shock style that NeoCverA uses. This insert was made with only 2 posters and a couple of screen shots, so I'm thinking it needs more detailed imagery from other sources possible.

I'm not thrilled with the content on the back. The background feels right, but the content on top of it just feels out of place like there's this gaping whole in the middle you should look at for some reason...

Any comments or criticism? :help:

Your definately off to a great start! Just the fact that there is yet another designer out there brings a brighter light to this entire Shock-Box Insert scene.

Hell, why not try swapping art (back goes to front and Front goes to back) - that would definately be different than whats out there. The front you chose is the same as the original.

the move stickers on the back are bit much to digest i think too. Just a lot of info going on there. (thats just me).

Welcome to the block.

I like the art he chose for the first version - with Ken and Terry. Just to see what else is out there, check it out.

Good start.
As for my thoughts:

Front: Try using different art, like NeoCverA mentioned, and also try making the logo bigger. Maybe try moving it to a corner or something, depending on the art you chose. Pick art that really pulls the theme of the game out into the open.

Spine: There seems to be a slight gap between where the back panel and top Neo Geo Advanced Entertainment System logo are. Perhaps it's just my eyes playing a trick on me, though.

Back: The move lists, while a noble idea, detract from the overall style. It is a bit too much, and because there are so many, I wonder how they will look when printed. I like the layout of the back and suggest this: Two colums of screens (left and right or top and bottom) and text about the game in between. Keep the Not a Match! Struggle! and everything below To Crush or be crushed...

Good start, though, and I hope to see you continue this! :buttrock:

One of my design professor told me that perfection isn't achieve by vision, but through revision. I've called him Yoda ever since then :tickled:

Took your crits to thought and came up with a modified design. It'll take a lot of time and revisions before I'm truly happy with this cover, but I think it's getting closer.

I kept the move stickers in there just because it's one of my biggest gripes with fighters. When you're learning a game it helps to have easy access to the move sheets, which aren't always readily available. If they were on the back of the box I'd get more use out of them. Oh well, it makes this design way too cluttered.

In my opinion, I still feel that the front logo should be resized a bit larger.

With the back layout redone, the move lists actually don't bother me that much now, but do you have two graphics on the back page? It looks like two are laid upon one another, and it is a bit hard on the eyes.
My two cents? Stick with the Ryuo battle one.

Very nice, though.
Potential, this one has. :tickled:

Yup, front logo definitely needs to be bigger.... WAY bigger!

I agree with your crits on the back, it's too messy and distracting. What you said about organizing the screenshots into columns gave me an idea on how to integrate the move sheet with the screent shots for something that's a little more readable and congruent.

This is probably my last revision for the night. And to think that in only a few hours I get to be coding instead of making digital art :help: :crying:

Slick, slick, slick.
Very nice idea to rearrange the back that way, and I like it a lot.

From a layout standpoint, generally copious amounts of centring isn't recommended but I feel it fits the flow on the back, so here is my final suggestion:
Try centring the "The long awaited..." sentence, and use left justification for the copyright information.

Again, great work!

The cover art came from one of the pages in the AES manual (I guess it's a good thing that SVC is the one AES game I haven't been able find a buyer for yet!)

Over the next week I'll probably try a few more variations with the back. It's getting a lot better, but still needs to more clarity and fine tuning.

How do people usually give copyright and intellectual credits on their covers? I have the generic SNK copyright info (which is unfortunately on the layer below the background, thus blocked out. D'oh!) but what's the best way to credit forum members and art sources without turning this into credits for a movie?

This feels pretty close to good for me... Just changed around a few small details but didn't alter the design much. I printed it out last night and put it in a shockbox, so in a week or two I'll probably revisit the design to see if there's anything to change.

Any more ideas on things to revise?

I really do like it as well.
A small piece of me was hoping for a centred "The long awaited..." sentence, but I'm picky like that.

Nice work, and keep us posted on any other changes or when you have uploaded it!

Nice work, again, and thanks for the upload.
Be sure to send it to guys like Kazuya, Big Bear, NeoCverA and others to that it can be hosted, if you haven't already.

edit: Sorry, forgot you had originally posted the link a long time ago. Thanks for posting it again for dumb people like me. :D

Actually I forgot to upload the PDF of rev5 to my web space, so thanks for reminding me :loco:

I have no problems with anyone who would like to host this file on their site as well (as long as they reference me as the author). Once I redo my portfolio web site I'm hoping to have a section dedicated to classic gaming, so all of the files will be available there.

Once one or two more inserts get finalized I'll turn on HTTP directory searcing for that directory so people can browse through and pick what the like.

Thanks again for all the critiques and help everybody! :buttrock:

I think the first and third covers are really nice - I'm not really into the blue cross-hatch stuff all that much though. Anyway, great work! It's always nice to see new talent surfacing to support the shockbox MVS scene! :multi_co:
