If you've got a 1320, are thinking about MIT and the like, don't even spend a moment thinking about DeVry.

DeVry and ITT are not real colleges or universities, they're techical colleges that teach people to (maybe) work under people who graduate from big universities.

There's a reason they're offering it for free without even so much as an application from you.

There's a reason they advertise on national TV.

There's also a reason why you won't find ITT or DeVry even mentioned in the US News & World Reports (which, whether you like it or not, is the Bible of college rankings).

You could earn a decent living doing whatever you learned there, but yeah, if you are thinking about MIT, then Devry will be a MAJOR step down from that.

Considering your SAT scores, I'd say you could do better.

I don't think this is going nearly far enough:

I've met people who've gone to ITT/DeVry and all they've been able to get hired to do afterwards is assemble computers.

Any elements of the college experience you might've looked forward to would be null and void.

They say they're a University, but they're just using wordplay. In reality, they are a reasonable techincal college. There are public techincal colleges across America that are pretty solid. However, none of them are peers to a traditional college/university.

Why do schools like DeVry insist on trying to label themselves to fool others?
Simple: They're private and they FOR PROFIT. Nearly all major private universities are NOT for profit. DeVry is and will do everything within its power to get people to go, even it that means trying to fool people on a technicality.

What risks are there with DeVry?
DeVry tries to sell people on learning "real-world" skills that will let them hit the ground running -but because they only teach you a few "how-to" courses their graduates often get nailed when the programs they were taught have ceased to be the industry standard (DeVry gets sued all the time by its graduates for their inability to land jobs... I can't, off hand, think of any major school that's had that happen).

BAD IDEA, BAD IDEA, BAD IDEA.

Don't waste 3 years of your life.

Hmm, I was thinking Devry was more like Ivy Tech, if anyone has every heard of that school.

There are other schools that fall somewhere between DeVry and M.I.T. - well, basically all of them do (except maybe Harvard). I suggest you have a look at those.

Take ACT?

ACT is better for some people. But you'll also have to check which tests the schools you want to go to will accept.

Sat II yet ?

On a more related note, I've heard DeVry has tuition costs at about the $30k range?

Major scam.

Don't do it unless you'll be happy with not finding a job.

Have fun next year with SATs. I've heard they're changing the format for next year.

SAT I will now include writing. :D

And they WILL give you the worst topics ever to write on. They're bastards like that.

Believe me, don't focus too much on what schools will be offering you.

Every school is going to be sending you crap, ignore all of that and do your own research.

PS: I knew a girl who got pre-accepted and offered a full ride to MIT....

And turned them down....

God, I hated that bitch.

But I'm happy to say Stanford turned her down. :buttrock:

Those are all good. Carnegie Mellon is one of the tops in Computer Engineering, no doubt.

If you feel REALLY lucky, try Cal-Tech :p

Many of the UCs (California) have good programs in engineering: UCSD, UCLA, etc. USC also has an enormous engineering school.

Purdue is a good Engineering school in the midwest.

Seriously, go pick up a US News & World Reports College Guide (or check their shortened online rankings), it'll help you figure out where's got a good rep.

Georgia Tech is for people who drink wine coolers. UGA all the way. After 5 or 6 good UGA parties your tolerance is high enough where after funneling a 12pack , that serverely deformed girl still appears to be serverley deformed. A skill that can prevent a lifetime of mental scars.

But, if you're talking about education, I'd shoot higher the Devry.

To build on the basic thought that Abasuto mentioned:

Don't think you need to go to a school with the name "Tech", "Institute", or "Polytechnic" at the end of it. Those designations have lost a lot of their meanings: Originally, the "Tech/Poly/A&M/State" schools were geared more towards Agriculture/Engineering/etc, but now basically all major universities handle all major programs.

For undergrads, just going to a top-50 or 100 undergrad university that has an engineering program will be good enough (I'm sure there are a few exceptions, but its a generally safe bet). Grad school is where you show your stripes.

There's a lot of good info floating around in this thread. Use it!

NJIT is a pretty good engineering school with a lot of Hindu's there. I don't go to school there but one of my friends go there and has commented on that they got a big Indian populuation over there. I'm not sure about Stevens though but if your set on going to MIT, then go for it.

Hey, if you're in New Jersey you probably should consider Rutgers (New Brunswick campus), right?

Its one of the better public universities out there.

Heck, Mr. Magoo is an alum:

so is James Gandolfini.

As you know, Princeton is also in NJ. If you can get into MIT, or any of the Ivy Leagues (Princeton-Cornell-Dartmouth-Harvard-Cornell-Penn-Brown-Yale-Harvard), I say go regardless of the tuition and loans -trust me, you'll have no probs paying them back later (and your experiences there will more than pay for themselves).

Man, if I got a 1320 on my SAT...I'd say f*** DeVry. IMO it's probably a crap school. Go to a real 4-year college; you’ll be much better off!

Better yet, try to get into the best college around.

USC :D

Bobak is right though. Don't worry so much about the cost. Worry about where you want to go to, first.

I still can't get over how someone I know turned down UC Berkeley for a free ride at a Cal State.

Sure, free is good, but this is one of the times you should bite the bullet.

Plus, there is always financial aid and scholarships. Start researching now.

Hell, there's even a scholarship for being left handed.

Just gotta find them.

You fucking 'Cock :D Wrong USC, as Keyshaun Johnson says: you go (and I went) to "the real USC".
