Finally scored "Crows: The Battle Action for Sega Saturn" (very rare 2D beat em up)

As some of you n-g.com veterans may remember, I posted about my impressions on Crows back in August of 2003 after my friend loaned me the game for a week. Well, I still feel the same way about it (flawed but very decent game, rainy day title if you will, uber kick ass presentation/style, sort of a "B-movie" game) and you can do a search to bring it up.

crows1.JPG

see? I told ya the style of the game is awesome! It's like a souped up Double Dragon here, in'it?

crows16.JPG

what better to do on a saturday nite than have a bar fight with some goon clones?

crows13.JPG

our rambo-wannabe going all zangief on the cops' asses!

crows14.JPG

adding insult to injury...

I got it for just under $100, which is crazy, considering the gameplay of the game (basic, nothing special), but it's SO freaking rare and expensive, believe it or not I got a GREAT deal on it. Crows commands $120+ on a consistent basis, and I've determined that it's close to being as rare as TAROMARU is.

Anyway, it's a 7/10 title (6/10, but give it a point for allowing you to beat up innocent street sweepers and cops) and is worth it for you Saturn beat em up fans. Just.... be prepared to pay a considerable amount, and be prepared for some tough competition (as eBay is the only place you'll find it, even copies in Japan are next to none to locate...)

any ?'s on Crows, please ask me here. And no, my copy's not for trade or sell :) It took me two years, TWO YEARS! My goal was just to get it under triple figures, and I made it within a hair's reach. :loco:

Nice find, I have a friend who's a saturn collector and he managed to find this for about $80 in gamers condition...very gamers condition. :D

The game looked like it was used as a nail file or something...but it works.

The continues are default 5, with up to 9 with a code (simply tap L and R repeatedly at title screen til it jumps to 9)

HBF A.K.A Nekketsu Oyako, I think, is a notch below Crows. Very small characters in Oyako, which was disappointing. And it lacked a certain OOMPH! feeling to it, but hey, for 15 bucks who's complaining? I'd rate it 6/10.

Sequel to DL is Suikoenbu Fuunsaiki

Unfortunately, I don't think member JP ever scored Crows yet. I remember he made a wanted thread of it in everything else, but the search came up futile.

Isn't Fuunsaiki the prequel to Fighters History Dynamite?

Yea, there are some real niche titles on the Saturn. I pciked up a beat 'em up called Nekketsu Oyako. It's an interesting beat 'em up and it farily decent. Doesn't look as cool as your game though. :D

always nice to see those screens :D

I actually wanted to know if you Steve, or anyone has played the sequel to Kings the Spirits on Saturn (you can play during any of the 4 seasons?), as well as Ninja Jaja Marukun, and Ninpen Man Maru?

I have been interested in these games for literally years and wondered how they played/looked. Anyone? sorry about making this a free for all :emb:
But a fellow Saturn enthusiast needs you!

On a very last note, anyone remember seeing a Resident Evil type game that was never released in the end but was going to come out for Saturn? It looked really good too - very dark (the main character was bare foot?). I had seen it previewed on the net on a Saturn site about 7 years ago.

Dude, that game looks really cool...me wants to play...
I think this thread has inspired me to play a shitload of MAME this afternoon.
I thought I was a Saturn junkie, but you take the cake man. You've shown all kinds of crazy games I've never heard of.

BTW, hope your romantic misadventures are turning out OK Steve.

PS- I think you should round up all your threads about specific Saturn games and corral them into one power SaturnFans thread. After all, I imagine many folks here, being hardcore 2D fans and all, own one. I know I used to love mine until time, fate, and fortune conspired against my large game collection.

Agreed, I really love my Saturn and all my imports and we need one mother of all threads to rule them all.

Yeah, though more like we need a mother Saturn site like this one. Same goes for PC Engine, there aren't a major hub for either really.

Yea, I actually just bought a PC Engine to compliment my Turbo Grafx. Man the Japanese had it made over there. I love Batman on the PC Engine. I was told that the PC Engine had as many games in Japan as the NES did here in America.

I'm working on it... wait 'til Spring of next year. I don't want to put it up until all the 2D shooters and fighters are reviewed, and I imagine I'll get the last of those around Christmas. So then it'll just be uploading 300+ reviews, screens, and making links... which will definitely suck up the rest of the winter season. -_-

Wow, such a response. Lemme start with Xshort. Fuunsaiki is not the prequel to FH Dynamite, although it DOES include Mizoguchi and Yung-Mie. It's the "sequel" to Dark Legend (more of an upgrade however than a full-blown sequel IMHO)

Crows and Nekketsu are titles best found on eBay. You won't find many people offering these little niche titles up for sell say, here in the everything else forum. eBay, no matter how much you hate it, if you do at all, is your best bet.

Devil, I've been meaning to play those Ninja pen games too. Some day. I have played King the Spirits 2 (sequel to US racer High Velocity and JP namesake King the Spirits). I prefer HV but KtS2 is so cheap, it's worth a look. It's cool because you get choice of night or morning, rain or not, and even season! It's quite cool. But not as novel as the first one, which has a charm to it I can't say the same for the 2nd one, for whatever reasons. But worth a try.

Deep Fear would be the name of the game the gentleman was inquiring about. JP version runs 5-10 bucks, the PAL version is much more rare and pricey.

Loopz, haha, thanks for the comment. Quickly, my "misadventures" are going just fine thanks for asking. :) It'd be neat to see an all-encompassing Saturn thread or what have you, but I think our man JP will get the job more than adequately done when he fires up his Saturn site, which I'm very much looking forward to.

In the meantime, there's always search feature here at n-g.com There have been many interesting Saturn topics over the last couple years.

It comes in a double cd case. Mine only has 1 cd, a spine card, and the manual. Am I missing something?

Steve or jp. let us know.

You're not missing anything. It's odd. It's one CD but comes in a double case, and the reason being why is because the manual is very thick with some fancy schmany artwork, so it couldn't squeeze into a regular-sized case. I guess one could place dark legend in the double case, so you'd have one nice data east package. :p

mmmh.. it actually wasn't deep fear as it wasn't being made by Sega (I like Deep Fear alot though) - this one had the main character with no top on and bare foot (I could be wrong - it has been years). If I find anything I'll let you know. Thanks alot for the info my man :D

what does the game's cover look like? I'm assuming the name is written in Japanese, so I wouldn't recognise it if I accedently found it here.
