I know Japan did receive ports of some games in the mortal kombat series, but I was wondering if the japanese actually played these games?

I would assume the series was considered a joke there, since it is US

developed, and the quality of gameplay is questionable to say the least.
Do any Japanese members know what the deal was?

They probably spit/pissed on it.

MK1 was of course a rather juvenile effort from a gameplay standpoint, but MK2 had a rather unique and engaging gameplay style. MK3 sort of fell into the trap of dial-a-combos, which aren't really my thing, but did have pretty tight gameplay otherwise.

I sort of doubt that MK was very popular in Japan, but there's no reason why it shouldn't have been, IMO.

The MK series isn't unknown to the japanese. I saw some japanese versions of some MK games. But I can't say about the popularity.

I never even saw any of them there, much less anyone playing them. While people here were playing SF2 and MK, people in Japan were playing SF2 and SNK games, which never caught on here at the level they did there. I, myself, can count the number of games I've played from the entire MK series on one hand. I'm not saying they don't have worth -- just not my bag. I played Killer Instinct a bit, though.

I hope they didn't,cause they'd probably laughed their asses to death.

Seriously, aside from the Fatality gimmick and other niche, the MK series suck....hard.

MK series = Garbage.

Most of the time that's true but there are some notable exceptions.

Wizardry is the best example i can come up with off the top of my head.

No way.

MK2 kicks ass, gameplay and all. Juggle combos galore is why.

To call MK2 garbage would be ignorant, imo.

I agree. MK1 was mostly a gimmick, and 3 was cursed with dial-a-combos - but 2 was an all around great game.

I had a few japanese friends back when MK was big. They did think it was garbage but they were also too busy hyping sega and the upcoming saturn so cheese-ball american arcade games were of no intrest to them.

Now that I look back Im suprised how much I loved the first 2 games. :oh_no:

You could probably count all the MK games on one hand anyway, not counting the spin offs like Mythologies and that one Special Forces game for the PS1, both of which supposedly suck the ass.

The only game that was a japanese version I've ever seen for sale here was "Mortal Kombat I &II" for gameboy.

Famitsu ran an article saying that some one was going to publish Dark Alliance and bring it out but it never happened.

In Akihabara all of the import game shops (importing western games) carry all the Mortal Kombat games, so there is some sort of strange cult following.

I drooled to death the first time I saw MK.

I was like WOW !! Real persons on a videogame !!!! ( youth nature :p )

Then when I saw the official cab of MKII I couldn't resist and drop some coins on it.
Nevertheless, I never passed beyond the 3rd stage !!! I suck hard at MK games.

The last really great MK was III, but II was the cherry over the cake of the series.

Kano and Rayden OWNZ.

I had the same "wow" reaction to the MK series when if first arrived,

but I wonder if the Japanese, already with violence portrayed throughout the culture, just didn't see the violence gimmick as all that interesting... which, of course, left them with the gameplay which wasn't nearly as good as the other series.

Still, I agree MK2 was much more fun as a fighter (I never played MK3).

For pure "novelty" gore with little gameplay, give me Time Killers :loco:

MKTrilogy was released for the PS over here, I bought a copy used once, and tried to get some of my Japanese friends to try and play with me.

They laughed at it, called it names, and made fun of America.

And these guys weren't even gamers.

The MK series popularity (back in the day) is enough to mock America.

Gaijin shit.

I had that same "wow" effect engulf my body when I first saw MK. 3 was the last one that caught my attention and from 4 and beyond, I believe the series shot to Hell...nah, just 4. In spite of this, MKII will be one of the few arcade games that I can honestly say it was truly a pleasure winning, losing, and watching helplessly as some guy re-froze me for what seemed like eternity while the crowd watched in awe. Don't really care if the Japanese said ick to MK, just like they probably don't care I say ick to Final Fantasy.

P.S. You would bring up Time Killers, wouldn't you? lol

I remember reading old game mags that said japan players hated MK. I don't know why the first 3 were great and still are fun. To each their own I guess.
