Lethal Homebrew Kills 13 Iranians, Blinds Five


TEHRAN (Reuters) - Toxic moonshine killed 13 Iranians and blinded five others in the southern city of Shiraz, state media reported on Saturday.

The official news agency in Iran, where alcohol is banned, said 60 people were taken to hospital after knocking back the deadly homebrew and 20 were still in a critical condition.

State television showed the victims stretched out on hospital beds and rigged up to drips.

A television broadcast reminded viewers alcohol has been outlawed since the 1979 Islamic revolution but it is, however, widely available in Iran, where it is smuggled across the nation's borders.

Doesn't isopropyl alcohol cause you to go blind? I'm guessing that if the physical conditions under which the alcohol is made aren't quite right, then you'll get some contamination of the ethyl alcohol with isopropyl, since their chemical structures aren't that different. D-lite is the organic chemist, maybe he can tell us :).

The sad irony is that Shiraz was the wine center of Iran.

Anytime you go and buy wine at a store or restaurant, you'll see "Shiraz" as a type of red. It was all grown in the Shiraz area until 1979, thankfully some people grabbed vines and planted them in Australia, California, and a few other places with a similar climate.

Now they're just getting stupid. We seriously need to export some "covert" rednecks to go teach'em how to do it right. (by covert I suggest giving them a tan, some false teeth, and maybe a lesson in cloths/hygene) :D

Praise Allah, alcohol was illegalized by the illuminated followers of Mohammad (PBUH). These sad victims in their deteriorated world would probably get into drunk driving accidents to end their suffering if alcohol was legalized, possibly killing other innocent people who might just rather be dead.

Instead, now they can just fry out their own brains on cheap homemade crap.

which there's a lot of regardless. People make good moonshine in Iran all the time.

Maybe if America was led by Allah and the teachings of Islam, our people would all know how to distill alcohol as well...
