Branson Breaks English Channel Record
Mon Jun 14,10:34 AM ET

LONDON - Dressed in a dinner jacket and bow tie, British tycoon Richard Branson on Monday broke a French-held record for crossing the English Channel between Britain and France on an amphibious vessel.

The Virgin Group chief completed the 22-mile crossing on his shiny black Gibbs Aquada amphibious craft in 1 hour, 40 minutes, 6 seconds, well below the record of six hours held by two Frenchmen.

Branson said he hoped his victory would help to ease the nation's anguish after England lost 2-1 to France in overtime in the Euro2004 soccer tournament in Portugal on Sunday night.

"Maybe it is not as important as football but it feels important right now," Branson said.

The entrepreneur, who set a trans-Atlantic speedboat record in 1986, was attempting his latest feat to celebrate the 20th anniversary of his Virgin Atlantic airline.

Crowds gathered around the harbor at Dover in southeast England to watch Branson leave aboard his craft, which looks like a sports car, but transforms into a "speedboat" with the touch of a button. Ferry passengers gathered on deck to cheer him as he passed.

After arriving at Calais, in northern France, Branson needed a little help to raise the vehicle onto wooden ramps on the beach, but it was not long before he was greeting the crowds who had gathered to mark his achievement.

The crossing was monitored by an official from the Guinness Book of Records, although it made no statement about the event.

The Gibbs Aquada, which sells for $115,000, can reach speeds of 100 mph on land and 30 mph on water.

The record had been held since the 1960s when two Frenchmen made the crossing in 6 hours in an "Amphicar" amphibious craft. They beat the record of 7 hours, 33 minutes held by Englishman Ben Carlin.

I watched this video at work...it sucks, because they have to push the car
out of the water, and then flip the "car mode" button...I was hoping for
some crazy ass transforming. :(

They also played the James Bond theme while celebrating. :)

My grandfather had the kind they made in the 50s and 60s that were amphibious.

Didnt have to push those out of the water, the wheels didnt fold up into the car. They just dont make them like they used to.

Bobak, you've been posting the weirdest shit lately (confederate widow and this) and I gotta thank you! :buttrock:
Just watching that would have been a cool sight to see. I can't believe it only took approximately 100 minutes!

Here's a stupid question:
What would you rather have, an aquacar or an aerocar? :smirk:

Nesagwa: I remember seeing repeats of those old ads and flyers for that car. That's pretty cool. Does he still have it, or is it in the family still?

I'd paint it black and add a few of the 60s Batman logos and go drive it around on a lake. It'd look just like the Adam West/Burt Ward Batmobile. Oh yeah!

The possibilities of that are maybe even greater than that Bond one that the Virgin exec used, although it's slow as hell. At least the new one has some nice power behind it.
Still...

That site you posted had it for around $40,000 US.
That's not that unreasonable for something that's obviously a collector's item. If you had the cash, would you pick one up?
Have any old family photos of it in use?

Sorry for prying and pestering, but this is pretty interesting stuff!

Exactly! The article notes that the Branson expidition had trouble with the specific French dock -otherwise the car is supposed to have no problems with boat ramps.

Well, the video I saw coming straight off the ABC feed had them
getting out...pushing the fucking thing in the water...driving across the
channel, getting out at the loading ramp and pushing it up the ramp.

Yay.
