I've never used, nor will I ever use, a sniping service. I will admit to sniping a couple of auctions, but for the most part I always bid what I'm willing to pay. If the auction goes higher than that, then so be it, I wasn't meant to have it... THAT time around. Funny thing about just about everything you see up for auction is that eventually, you'll see it again. If you don't see it again it's likely because you stopped looking for it, which, since you lost the auction anyway, you've saved yourself some money.
The craziest auction I've ever taken part in was the Yahoo JPN auction for
this. It's a limited edition Sakura Taisen (Wars) live stage musical. I sent
Masato I think ~18,000 Yen total, for an auction price of 15,000 Yen and his 3,000 Yen service fee. I had him bid in the last 10 minutes. Funny thing about Yahoo JPN auctions is that if someone bids in the last 10 minutes, no matter when they bid, it automatically bumps the timer back up to 10 minutes. Well, when Masato put my bid in, it was on 7 bids. You can see it finished at 20 bids. Since Masato is just a dude buying stuff and not an automated service like Rinkya, I had about 6-7 emails back and forth during what went from the last 10 minutes of the auction to a little over 40 minutes. I was the high bidder, but damn I paid out the ass for it. My highest bid would have been 19,750 Yen. At 20,000 Yen Masato's service fee goes up to 4500 Yen instead of 3000.
I actually wish eBay would implement the time bump feature where if someone bids within the last 5-10 minutes, the time gets bumped back up to the 5-10 minute mark. This would negate all of the sniping services and would give a fair chance to people who want an item but always get outbid at the last 2 seconds of an auction. But whatever. I haven't tried to get anything off of eBay in quite some time.
