if the MVS/AES memory cards are standard PCMCIA type J cards (is that right ?)

then wouln't it be possible to replace on with a PCMCIA adapter that takes say a compact flash card (or Smartmedia or MMC )

Adapters can be had for about £10-£15 and 32 MB memory cards are under £10 for the most popular memory formats.

anyone tried this ?

The only cards that will run directly from the reader are PCMCIA type 2. afaik
Flash cards will not work, unless there is some interface, which is possible.
Other PCMCIA cards may not fit in the slot. I think they are 3.5mm.
