Anyone seen some really old video games lurking around?

When several of us MN folks headed out to djdelly's local small town theater, they had some amazingly old games. In addition to some 80s classics like Silk Worm, they actually had Midway's Datsun 280 Zzzap in working condition: which is suspiciously close to Atari's "Night Driver" -the very first game to use "3D" effects [pylons]. Both came out in the same year, Datsun was supposed to by called "Midnight Driver", but no doubt they felt that was too close of a name -at the time all games ripped each other off. While Atari pioneered stuff, the belief at the time was not to sue copycats -rather just keep coming up with new ideas.

According to KLOV its from '76. That makes is older than most member here.

I'm tempted to try and buy it so it'll be in safe hands. I wonder if they'll sell for less than $100... [it would be comedy if I ended up talking to some old man who said "What? I paid a full $500 for that game and, dag-nabbit, I expect that much!")

Anyone else seen some of these older darlings around? (they don't need to be nearly 30 years old. Lets aim for pre-JAMMA [approximately 1985]).

Those sites are cool, but I was also curious if people saw the games still in action like the one I saw a few weeks ago at a movie theater.

While on vacation in Vegas I visited the Game Land (I think that was the name) at the M&Ms/Coca-Cola building. Lots of older Atari games in very sturdy, thick-wood cabs with molding at a quarter a play.

Here in town the bowling alley has a sit-down, 2 player Ms. Pac-Man at a quarter a play, sitting next to a stand-up Out-Run machine. The Ms. Pac-Man screen is burnt-out a little...colors are very dim, but plays like always.

clasics

I was at a hotel last year and they still had one of my all time favorites set up Atari's S.T.U.N. Runner. The video game store by my house had Gauntlet for a while and the pizza place next to it has Ms. Pac Man. Not exactly ancient by pre jamma.

A few years ago I've been to a Pizza Hut somewhere in Delaware that had 1942, the Aliens game from Konami, Operation Thunderbolt, Street Fighter II Champion Edition, Astyanax, Super C, and Mercs.

I saw a near-mint Tron cab at last year's MN arcade auction. It went for $750 if I remember right. There were lots of Neo cabs, but none of them were even in good condition as all of them needed lots of restoration work. But there was a very good: Mortal Kombat II, Street Fighter Championship Edition, Mario Bros., Metamorphic Force and TMNT (which Verbatum won and I took a circular saw to, good times, great story).

There is a very cool arcade in a small town called Oban in Scotland that's most recent cab in Outrun, and it's easily the most recent. I think I played Pheonix last time I was there, but it's been about three years...

@ a "Dairy Queen/Road Stop" inbetween SATX and Houston there's a few older cabs that still play well = Crime City Superman Commando. The cabs are a bit scuffed up and need to be washed down a bit, but the games play exceptionally well.

@ a BEST WESTERN hotel lobby off of IH-10 and Vance Jackson Road in SATX there are the following in working order = Operation Thunderbolt *Some minor monitor problems but working none the less... Ikari Warriors, Bad Dudes, Toobin'

@ Smokey's Bar-B-Q off of Fredricksburg Rd in SATX = Ms. Pacman

The oldest games I've seen still in operation are at the Sunsplash in Mesa. There's a Galaga, Mario Bros, Frogger and one other old cabinet still there. Other than that they have a handful of older fighters from the early 90s, nothing ancient.

Yep. I did some of my early technical work on those games as I used to work at that place...way back in 1988-89 ;)

I've sold most of my arcade games, but still have a few old ones that are fully working. Keep in mind that these do break down from time to time so it can be pretty time consuming hunting the parts down to get them working again.

Space Duel (1982)
Donkey Kong cocktail (1981)
Star Wars (1983)
I Robot (1984)
Return of the Jedi (1984)

I still find a few. But nowadays what you can find here are cabs of Virtua Striker 2/3.

The most old-ass game I can remember that still pops coins on it is the mighty "Pinball Action" lolz. 85 ? 86 ? Certainly one of these dates.

Yes, awesome collection. I saw a video of I-Robot and I'd really love to play it considering how rare it was.

I've played alot at PhillyClassic. One was called Varkon that was a pinball machine inside of an arcade cab, really weird. Another one was called SkyDiver that had a cool ripcord to open your parashoot. Quantom was also reall cool. It was like a drawing game, never saw it before.

I can't wait for next years PhillyClassic, they always change the lineup of games.

At Kennywood Amusement Park near Pittsburgh, PA, there is an arcade with a ton of old games (no Neo though). They have Space Invaders, Dig Dug, Donkey Kong, Asteroids, Breakout, etc. I went there last year and was very impressed. All the cabs are in nice shape too.

I almost forgot about the Millipede machine at the local Nissan dealer. I was getting my car serviced last week and got to play Millipede for an hour. The trackball wasn't perfect, but it was still playable. It's cool to see old arcade games still chugging after years of abuse :buttrock:

I went ot my friends house the other day. He has a semi large collection of arcade cabs. While I was there I played:
Tron
Dig Dug
Star Wars (Atari vector version)
Empire Strikes Back
Track and Field (this might be JAMMA)
Defender
Beserk
He also has alot of JAMMA and pinball games. The collest cabs he has are a sitdown Spy Hunter cab, and Virtual On.

Sweet! I really enjoy all of those games (save for Track and Field, which I never played).

The coolest old cab I've ever seen by far is the Ghouls N' Ghosts down at the Redondo pier. Oh, the fond memories of that game. She's pretty mint too, what a beaut'. God I wanna buy that sucker. I will, too if it's still around when I have the money to spare, and the asshole owner is around...anybody know how common these are?
