Well, I'm not much of a speller to begin with, but forgive me if I used the wrong lose. Anyway, after realizing that a lot of people are waiting for tons of RPG's and FPS to be released, I started thinking.... If these titles suck so much, why don't peopel realize this?

I started remember the good old days of 2d platforms, and 2d fighters. Those were great times back in the days. But now the se 3d world of simulations that lack the essence of a videogame (fun), are now focused more on addicting gamers. I mean seriously, the gameplay for an RPG or a FPS is not about fun, it's about time consuming.

I guess until there's another genra growing for now we'll have to suffer by coexisting with gamers who are suckers for these genras.

I see a growing interest in strategy games, who knows maybe it'll be a genra demanded by gamers on the future, what do you guys think?

An observation I would make is that RPGs lose their place in your console when you get a full time job and a girlfriend. There just aren't enough hours in the day.

RPGs will probably hold their place in the affections of people with enough time to devote to them for some time yet. I think FPS are the contemporary equivalent of the classic arcade game, you can have a quick blast, not touch it for a month and pick it back up without missing out anything.

Ergo, I play arcade games and FPS cause it's all there is time for.

Correct, when you're out of time.

I used to love the snes rpgs when I was little and there's still about 10 which I didn't play back then and are now available in translated form (like FF5 for instance)

I would love to play them, but I simply don't have the time to spend 60 hours on it anymore.

I have a Short Attention Span, and the last RPG I finished was Chrono Cross and was a few years ago

I played Xenogears after that and couldn't finish it

now, I'll probably never play another

Besides, all RPGs have been shit since Final Fantasy VII was released

The only ones I've ever liked are: Earthbound, Final Fantasy III US (VI JPN), and the greatest ever: Chrono Trigger

You are quite right there m8.RPG's used to be about finding things out as you go along, piecing together parts of the storyline from people that you met or with artifacts that you found.

But now its just ghey bullshit.Look at FF VII on the psx......get off train and get set upon by some dickheads.........Why?Well you don't know and its just randomn battle after random battle to get you to level up.What the fuck is that shit all about? Then its time for a cutscene to tell you what you have to do next and who you are going to meet and what their part in the story is.......then you go off and do it and then its the next cutscene.......ad finitum until you get the end credits.

Is it because nowadays people are too illiterate or just too stupid to be able to work out stuff on their own and need to be told everything what to do in a game?Or does every game have to come down to a pokemon style leveling up system before you can fight a stronger opponent?I prefered it when you would find an item that would increase your characters strength or ability not just have to fight tedious battle after battle with some weedy gimp just so that your characters EXP can go up and notch.

RPG's nowadays are just tiresome and tedious.

Did you ever play Grandia II or Skies of Arcadia? Both are excellent titles.

And I pretty much concur with the above, once your time becomes limited, finishing RPG's is not easy. I'll still make time to work my way through some, such as the new Star Ocean game.

There are a lot of good RPG titles out there.
Yes, they are good.
The problem is that I don't have time to spend any game requiring 10+ hours.

Same to action/shooting/strategy games.

all the people I know who are into rpgs talk to me like I'm stupid
when I say I like shit like lunar and grandia since it's short, sweet and you
don't take a fucking eighth of you life playing it.
guess the fuck what. I don't have the time to play the next final snooze game.
and I haven't since maybe 3 years ago though my attention span
for this genre probably died out about 6 years ago

Looking over this thread and thinking about the "TIME" one must indeed invest in the RPG genre, I guess this means Japanese ppl are more or less lame and have no lives then. RPGs are the biggest selling thing and make or break a system... but what I don't understand is how if they have all that schooling, cram school and conformity to the system. Where in GOD's name does the average Japanese kid get the time to buy all these RPGs and beat them? If Americans don't have the time for them and we fuck off at more or less everything, where does a zero product faliure rate country high on "WA" find the time to beat all the games out there?

I used to enjoy a good RPG ... but I just don't have the huge blocks of time anymore that I need when I play them. I can enjoy a nice shooter or fighter for thirty minutes, turn it off, and be content with it. If I play an RPG for only 30 minutes it feels like a total waste of time. Also, chopping up the story into twenty 30-minute blocks just totally fucks up the experience for me.

I usually only play RPGs an hour to an hour and a half at a time.

Like Dragon Force, toward the middle of the game, one turn can last about an hour, so I'll play through one week and then save and quit.

Or with KOTOR the other RPG I'm playing, I'll play for like an hour, do a few missions or fight a few enemies or explore and then save and quit. It doesn't mean I hate the games it's just that I can't sit there for such a long time anymore playing these kinds of games.

rant

Well out the 2 dozen or so for the PS2 only about 4 are worth owning that are available in english. Plus now most are made tedious due to loooooong crappy cinemas, 10+ year old recycled plots and generic characters. Pick up the classics and play them for an hour or so at a time.
All the MMPORPGs are truly nothing but leveling up marathons. That is the opposite of the spirit of RPGs. You are supposed to feel like you accomplished something or were caught up in the story with the characters. Not that you need 214 more Exp. points to level up. Also if they are going to require that you spend all your free time playing you should be able to do it solo and not have to pay $$ per month.

Star Ocean 3 should be worth the wait, and the last 2 games from Atlus have been outstanding.

Exactly.

I don't have the time or the patience of a slow-paced RPG spanning dozens of hours. The time investment far outweighs the interest I have in them anymore. Chrono Cross really soured my liking for RPGs anyway. After that the only good RPG I played was Suikoden.

Although it should be said that for some BIZARRE reason I'm really interested in Final Fantasy XII, even more so by the fact that its a "sequel" to FFT.

First I've heard of XII being a sequel to Tactics, pretty fuckin cool. Restores a bit of hope actually, could be the first FF game I'll play all the way through since VII.

I agree, about Chrono Cross that is. I was such a big fan of CT, and wanted a sequel for years. Then when one finally came out, I was totally disapointed. To this day I haven't played it for more than 6 hours.

Well, it takes place in Ivalice, beyond that I don't know what connection it has to Tactics.

That and its supposedly going to further move away from rigid turn-based battles. Anything to speed up an RPG is a-ok in my book. Some of my best gaming moments are RPGs, I just have zero time to play them.

I didn't even finish Xenosaga, and I LIKED that game.

I don't know if it's actually a sequel, but it is set in the same world as FFT and FFTA, and I think Vagrant Story.

Tales of Symphonia comes out for Gamecube in July. I'm not a big RPG player, but it looks cool. Especially the animation.

It's not. At all
It's just made by same director
I expect a very deep combat system but nothing else
carachters and all look even more irritating then those from FFX

Holy god...I had not seen that trailer. I suppose the age-old question must be asked once again, why the fuck does Square insist on making the main character increasingly more faggoty with each game? I had higher hopes for this one, something along the lines of FFT style character design...since it's in Ivalice and all. But no, of course not. Do the Japs just eat this metrosexual shit up or what???I guess I didn't notice anything awful about it other than the main character though. We'll see.

Can't agree that FF7 was the last good RPG. That statement is so ridiculous.

The last good RPG I played was this year. Arc: Twilight of the Spirits, not many games hold my attention span anymore, the ones that do, I rate very high.

Great storyline, dealing with the age-old topic of racial segregation. It wasn't necessary to level up the characters to godly positions, you just had to form a strategy against bosses. I like voices during battles, it's a welcome change.

I prefer the old classic 2d RPGs because it just gives a nogalisitc feel. Especially Chrono Trigger, and many others like Phantasy Star and Shining Force. The RPGs these days have too much BS with them.
