As near as myself and a few others in the company can tell, they launched this one to make up for shortcomings on their fiscal quarter outlook that fell way short of what they were expecting. I had heard that they based the quarter on potential releases like Gran Turismo 4 and Halo 2 but both of those games (as well as a few other prominent titles) were delayed for a goodly amount of time.
In order to recoup their outlook losses, on top of making that money back on the backs of their employees by slashing our discount AGAIN, they've decided to hold a fire sale. The margin of profit on pre-owned games is WAY higher than it is on new and even if they sold 2 games for $45 each and gave a $45 for free as part of the deal, they still clear $40 or so profit depending on what titles sold.
There is some good to the sale though...for less than $20, a co-worker of mine was able to snap up 3 movies she's been wanting for a while now that would have cost her $35+ if she went to Suncoast or even Best Buy. They're used and for some reason movie DVD cases aren't fond of our price stickers but the discs were minty fresh.
They ran this sale a few months back and I picked up Black Stone, Shadow Hearts, and KOF '00/'01 for about $60....broke down to about $20 a title so I was happy.
If you're gonna take advantage of this sale, then I strongly suggest before leaving the store you check each and every item you have to make sure the discs/carts/accessories are is as minty fresh as possible. Oh and if you're getting $60 or more worth of used stuff, go ahead and get the Gamestop card. I know, I know...I'm NOT trying to play company man here but it's basically no extra cost to you to do it 'cuz there's a coupon in the latest Game Informer that stacks with the 10% off you get at the time of purchase that negates the sign up cost. If for nothing else you can peruse the silly ass Game Informer while you're taking a shit and leave your good magazines like Play in your room away from the bathroom.
