Help me to play Football Frenzy

OK so I picked up FF for £5 just the other day. I don't have that many Neo games that are not fighting ones so I thought I'd sit down with this. I'm having problems in that I don't really understand how American Football works. I'm having difficulties with what I should be doing. I know that the idea is to score a touchdown, but I don't understand downs and all of the different plays such as passplay and runplay and what shotgun and everything means. I find myself always going with the kick option. If someone could give me a real quick breakdown of the rules I'd really appreciate it as I find FF fun to play, but am yet to score a point. The closest I ever come to American Football is watching the Superbowl each year.
Any help greatly appreciated.

Oh crap. I recently bought this (I'm awaiting delivery) and haven't even seen a Superbowl. I can imagine how much sense it's going to make to me.

It's probably more fun if you don't have any idea what you're doing. Or so I've heard.

Oh, man sorry you bought that crap. If you want to play a good Football game pick up one of sega's newer 3D football titles. Football Frenzy is extremely bad. :(

I don't think FF is nearly as bad as people say, it's actually pretty decent with 2 players.

Anyway, to answer your question, when you have posession, you have to advance at least 10 yards within your 4 (or it 5?) downs, otherwise you lose posession of the ball. Generally you should stick to passing play as it seems alot easier to make up ground and only resort to kicking the ball on your last down.

My grasp of the rules of American Football is pretty dodgy plus my FF runs in Japanese but I know enough to be able to get by in this game and hammer to computer opposition.

I hope this helps you understand the game better.
