Curious what you all thought of him as an actor. I just caught both Out of Time and John Q. today. Both great films I thought, but.... heh... it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out a pattern there. Still, Denzel and drama go hand in hand.

I caught Man on Fire in the theatre back on Opening Weekend as well. I like him as an actor a lot. He commands such a strong on screen presence, and I love how he delivers his lines.

He seems a little over rated to me, although he was great in training day. Probably his best performance IMO.

As opposed to Denzel Washington the......podiatrist? Carpenter? Circus clown?

He's okay I guess. I don't go to a movie because he's in it, or anything. He just doesn't irritate me like so many other "leading men".

LOL. Smart ass. :D

I was thinking more "the person." Though none of us prolly knows him in any real way, there are outside bias such as stories or rumors or what have you. So just going strictly by his acting merits.

BTW, when you hinted about irritating leading men, would Mel Gibson be on your list? For some reason I think he irritates many people.

I thought his performance in Signs was kinda ho-hum.

Well, they're all pretty much irritating. I don't go to see any movies with big name actor's in them because they're in it. Brad Pitt is really good in Fight Club, but everything else is fucking boring since he plays basically the same character in every film, just with slight variations. Tom Cruise is good in Vanilla Sky and Top Gun, everything else is garbage. Etc, etc

The only exception to this rule being Schwarzenegger.

i thought man on fire was awesome. i like it when he plays the badass roles but i dont go see movies because he is in them. there are so few serious black actors though so he stands out.

DW is a good actor, but his choice of roles are abit uneven. I loved his role in Philadelphia (he was homophobic but suppressed his emotions for his client and slowly saw homosexuals as people and embraced them at the end), but most of his other movies are bleh...

"Teh Wife" goes to see Denzel movies because Denzel is in them... I go to see Denzel movies because the dude's a versatile actor and a PIMP. He's had his hit or misses over the years like the so-so 1991 flick Riccochet with John Lithgow, but then he more than walks the walk in flicks like Glory, Man on Fire {making that re-make a heck of a lot better}, John Q and many more. I could see where some think he's overrated but he doesn't just play a T-Shirt in every film the way some Hollywood media faces do + he's not one of those whackjob "Hubbard Scientology" bastids, nor a Kabbalah mainstreamer either and has the balls to stand behind his Christian faith in a town that's pure bullshit. For all of that I salute him. My favorite role with him will forever be in Training Day. The dude's come a long way since The Mighty Quinn and St. Elsewhere.

Training Day is probably his best movie. Easily one of my favorite actors out there.

funny because, though I tend to agree with you, I thought Brad Pitt was way better in Kalifornia, and Tom Cruise in Interview with a Vampire (Vanilla Sky - watched it a few times - very engaging film but I found most ofthe acting to be stiff and overdone).

Denzel does not appear to have a good criteria for choosing films - I consider him one of the greatest actors out there, definetly up there with Robert De Niro, Harvey Keitel, Gary Oldman, and the rest.
He's yet to do a role where he is immortalised (look what Tarantino done for so many actors - of way lesser capacity than Washington).
I generally don't like the movies he's in (Training Day is ok), but will watch a film he's in for his acting - the same way you would with Al Pacino.

Training Day is definitely Denzel's best movie, but I think he's a great actor.

Stinky-Dinkins: People say you look like the white Denzel? Interesting. People say Denzel looks like the black me. :smirk:
