just got this email

C'mon now, don't frown. You and Manci Games gave it our best shot!

After much blood, sweat, and tears, Manci Games Magazine has decided to call
it quits. While our subscriber base has been the absolute best that one
could ask for, we feel that the market simply is not big enough to support a
monthly, full color, 48-page magazine dedicated solely to the retro-gaming
market.

The Bad News: No more Manci Games after Issue 2.

The Good News: All paid subscribers will receive a full pro-rata refund!

If you paid by Paypal, your refund will be sent back via Paypal. If you
paid by check or money order, a check will be issued. All refunds will be
issued by June15th, 2004.

In order to make sure that the returns process flows smoothly, we will be
ensuring that everyone who subscribed through 10:00 PM on June 3rd, 2004
will receive a copy of both Issue #1 and Issue #2. This will allow an even
10/12 pro-rata refund to all subscribers, while also giving any late-comers
the
opportunity to acquire both issues for $2.00 each. Expect these to show up
in your
mailbox within the next two weeks.

Thanks again to all of our subscribers. You guys are the best readership a
new mag could hope for. Also, thank you to all of our contributors. There
would not have been a magazine without you.

While Manci Games is packing it in, there are a few upstarts willing to give
it another go!

Be sure to check out:

Retro Gamer - http://www.livepublishing.co.uk/content/retrogamer.shtml
(Manci's Choice!)
Classic Gamer - www.classicgamer.com (Online Only & High Quality)
Video Game Collector - www.vgcollector.com ("The Beckett of Video Games")

Manci Games wishes the best of luck to all of these publications.
Hopefully, you will get to check out MG alumni within the pages of all of
them!

Manci Games Magazine might be dead...but Manci Games Publishing lives on.
Be sure to check the website again a month from now, as we will be unveiling
an exciting new project...

Signing off (for now),
The Manci Games Crew

Oh man... :(

Figures, with such a small user base I wondered how they could afford to give away a free issue.

And I was gonna subscribe once I got a cash flow :(.

Yep, got the same E-mail. Man, this sucks! I was really hoping for this mag to pick-up and give us another reason to look in our mail. I'm happy that we will all get a refund, but what I really want is for a mag like this to do well. I wonder what this"Other project" will turn oput to be?

R.I.P. Manci Games.

Hell of a run man.

Seriously, print VG mags are dead. You cannot pull it off. Not unless you have millions and want to print one more me-too mainstream publication with shitloads of adverts and NO journalistic integrity. When Maxim and other completely non-game oriented mags get in on 'reviewing games', you know it's a lost fucking cause.

I don't think print VG mags are dead, at least in the UK, where they appear to be doing very well, and aren't filled up with ads like the ones in the US.

Shame about manci, I thought it had great potential.

Didn't GameGO! die after two issues as well? Disappointing.

I got the email last night.

It really sucks.

I was really pouring myself into the mag in my own little way, with a KICK ASS SNK/Neo article for this month's submission (August Issue).

I'm anxious to hear what the new project is, which I'm guessing is going to be a retro site a la gamespot.

Should be interesting. I may just take all of my unpublished reviews and try to get them put on this site. Don't want to waste the work.

I was about to subscribe too! I thought Issue #2 was well done, it is really too bad that such a mag cannot sustain itself, but I suppose classic gaming is still a niche market :( And I see like 10 different VG mags on the shelf yesterday and I have to say, almost all of them are not even toilet paper material. :oh_no:

This is really too bad - I enjoyed my free issue #2, and was planning on subscribing soon. I hope that the Manci Games folks do indeed start up a web presence, since that would at least mean a permanent home for the content of the magazine. It's really unfortunate that most of these niche oriented game magazines seem destined to flop in the US.

That is really too bad. Outside of the price guide, it was really a well done magazine.

A monthly publication for a classic gaming did seem a bit ambitious though.

Why not go with a quarterly publication? I would have no qualms paying $10 for a well done quartely, heck I already pay nearly that much for a copy of GamesTM.

I don't want to sound sour, but when I first read about the magazine here and saw some previews I thought that it would not last long...

What is really a shame.

Well having a retarded name for the magazine didn't help either. Did they every explain what exactly "manci" was?

Wow. This was prolly the company's first magazine. He obviously didn't have any patience.

BTW, is Manci's VG price guide actually helpful?

Yea, too idealistic of an idea... I think retro gaming should be regulated to fanzines, personally. Works out much better.

Yep, I hear you. I had a FEELING it wasn't going to last very long simply because this is no longer the era of "Up Start" companies or magazines. The "Cult" market is still not big enough to warrant such a cool concept. I didn't want the dissapointment of this at all, thus I was waiting back to see if it survive 6 full issues, then I'd have subscribed and sent them a donation. I've learned in the past not to jump the gun on things like this, then get that damned letter stating it's all over. It seems the gaming world is destined to have craptastic mags like GMR forever. :(

Hahaha, so true. Actually I had never even heard of the magazine before and I was even hesitating whether to read this topic or not, mainly due to how gay "Manci Games" sounds.

Perhaps on their future projects they can actually use a "cooler" name?

And yes, I agree, the idea of a Retro Gaming Mag is cool, but sadly it won't last long in the Mainstream U.S.
