Honestly folks. When I first read online and magazine reviews...I thought to myself "WTF, eight-and a half out of ten, nine out of ten! For a game based on Vin "XXX" Diesel?! It can't be true." I had to see if the reviews were true. So I plunk down my fifty, start playing around five o'clock, and I didn't stop until I finished a little after two in the morning. The game...is...good. Wait it's better than good, it's my pick for suprise title of the year, just like Prince of Persia was last year.
Now, to me, the game feels like it's broken up into four sections. The first hour feels like everything Breakdown should have been. You have no access to firearms, so all you have left to defend yourself with is your fists and a few melee weapons. After two hours in, CoR becomes a FPS. Shotguns and automatic rifles and handguns are your friends for an hour as you kill just about every guard that crosses your path.
Then there's the third section. This is the part of the game when I felt like I was Riddick...trying to get out of Butcher Bay. This is the stealth section, it's the longest/hardest part of the game. You've lost access to firearms again, and you must work your way down to the bottom of the prison, with only melee weapons...against moderately armored, automatic rifle packin' guards. Not easy. This section alone took four hours. Patience...is...a virtue.
The last section is straight up arcade glory, all the best weapons literally handed to you. The game is putting a cap on the story, so you're basically given an easy road to success. If you die at this point, put the controller down, you suck.
I left out lots of key elements to the game because I think this is a worthy purchase (if you bought Breakdown, you've gotta buy CoR), or at least a rental. And for those of you who like number-based reviews...
Graphics - 8/10 - some reviewers said this is the best looking game ever on the box. I think not. Lots of jaggies and background blur. But the framerate is constant and the lighting effects are great. The lip-sync could've used a little more work.
Gameplay - 9/10 - CoR delivered what Breakdown couldn't. FPS-Action that leans heavily on melee rather than run'n'gun like so many other FPS's. The production values are so high that there were times when I felt like I was Riddick. That's a thing not easily accomplished these days in gaming. Controls are tight and the button layout makes sense.
Sound - 9/10 - primo voice acting from Vin Diesel, Cole Hauser, Ron Perlman, Xzibit and Micheal Rooker. The guns are loud and in charge. Explosions are good. The soundtrack is sort of...non-existent however. As a majority of the time there is none (or I just didn't notice because I was too "into the game").
Overall - B+ - Vin Diesel said that "when you see Tigon Games in the credits, you'll know the game is going to be off da hook" Well Mr. Diesel, you are correct. I saw Tigon Games in the credits and CoR is "off da hook", indeed. Xbox owners, FPS lovahs, those who dig lots of blood and foul language in their games. Give CoR some play, you won't regret it.
