I haven't watched the anime, but I have heard good things about it. A lot of people say it stays true to the manga, and since I read the manga, then it must be good. There should be other people on these boards who know more about the anime than I do but if I was you, I would pick it up.

Email ADV, they're generally pretty cool about stuff like that. Although I think the pins WERE supposed to be limited. If it says 'pins' on the cardboard sleeve that came with the box to hold all the shit in place, you should have gotten them.

As far as the Anime, I've only seen the first disc so far. The first 3 episodes or so are kinda boring and not all that funny, IMO, but it really picks up and has the feel of the Manga after that. From what I understand the rest of the series is as good as eps 4-5, so it should be good.

My disc 2 actually shipped 2 days ago, so I should have it by the weekend. If I get a chance to watch it, I'll let you know how it is.

Cool, thanks, although I don't see how english voices in this anime could be any good because there are a ton of japanese puns in this anime that wouldn't make sense if it was said in english =P

Uhm, I don't recall saying I watched the show in English (were you implying that? I can't really tell, sorry)... because I haven't. I watched it subbed, though I did read the Manga in English as well. As I've been sleeping with Anime for a while now, I can 'get the idea' when a pun is introduced in a Manga so long as it retains it's Japanese roots. I have also learned enough spoken Japanese to be able to understand the simpler shows. I'd never get the puns in Urusei Yatsura without assistance or be able to understand a Gundam show, but with simpler things, take the Cutie Honey TV series, I may miss things, but I am able to grasp the fundamentals and get a good enough concept of what is going on to justify watching the R2 discs even though they aren't subbed. I'd never be able to watch UY or Gundam without subs and expect to understand even a little of what is going on. Subbed in English works fine for me though! :D

What did I tell you when the manga first came out? :shame:

Anyway, it never gets as good as the manga, and the direction falls flat on its FACE a couple times, somethings are taken WAY differently then in the manga (like when Sakaki leaves Yamamaya. The anime REALLY fucked up with that one... :oh_no: )

However, the voice cast is excellent. (Mmm... Kagura)

And even with all those faults... I still love it. Because it's Azumanga Daioh, and Azumanga Daioh is great.

I don't know, there are some really funny scenes (almost all of the 'swimming' session in the school pool :D), but you are right, I don't know that it could be as good as the Manga. The bar is set a bit high with the Manga and just about any attempt at animating would tend, IMO, to not quite reach the bar. I'm just glad they didn't animate the manga 'line for line' and put other little stories in as well.

Hmm... why do you like Kagura's voice.... LOL :drool_2:

Nah nah, I saw some of the fansubbed version and there were a lot of japanese puns and I would think the puns in english would sound very dumb heh, I just wanted to know if the dvd was good clean video and such. =) Also, something that really bothers me....Fansubbers do 10x better job on translation+notes on the anime than the companies (like signs, and they explain a japanese pun on the top, don't forget karoke heh) and all I see from the companies are plain white or yellow text for translation and a lot of untranslated stuff, they don't explain things as well. Its like you see hear a japanese pun and your like wtf does that mean, whats so funny, with fansubbers...they explain it...I think the companies should learn from the fansubbers and do what they do.

Fantastic series. A series about NOTHING, no fanservice, nothing, but so hilarious and good. Buy it with your eys closed. But only if it had the original japanese dub option.

The only manga thig ommited that I really missed is the Magnatron Burger ;)

Fox1- Have you seen any Animeigo DVDs? They give you the onscreen liner notes just as you are describing.

The reason you can see these titles in the fansubs are because of the limitations of the DVD format for subtitles. One of the limitations in terms of subtitles that most companies don't try to combat is how many titles can fit on a screen and that if one set of titles is in area 'A' field 'A', unless you turn those subs off, you are stuck with those subs for the time until it's supposed to 'turn off.' Subtitles on DVDs are a real pain in the ass. Watch some of the older Pioneer titles. When you see onscreen translated text in an actual digital sub format, you VERY rarely see text subs along with it. One set of subs would need to be turned off to turn the other on, if that makes sense.

Animeigo does some crazy amazing shit with their subs. You should check out Urusei Yatsura for a shining example of how subs should be. Another title that comes to mind that matches what fansubbers can do would be His and Her Circumstances. They do some seriously ultra crazy psycho shit with their subs on that one.

It's funny :)
the US dubbing is good they must of tried hard to find a cute voice actress for Chiyo-chan, she reminds me of the voice actress that did Sasami for Tenchi Muyo.

I love eps 5 lol
funny when Chiyo is remebering the bad car ride she took in the car lol ;)

The part the anime did best was the last episode.

Best translation from the manga in the whole series.

Also, when Chiyo asks Nyamo "the question" in Summer Trip 2.
Excel Saga style censoring! You can tell this is JC Staff we're talking about.

Anyone who listens to the dub is missing out on the best part of the anime, the awesome acting. Osaka is such an enigma.

And isn't Kimura animated perfectly?

Yotsubato! is so much better in those areas.

It just doesn't have the soul of Azumanga Daioh.

I hope it gets animated. Maybe this Fall... even. I wouldn't be surprised.

Oh, and normal companies could do the same thing as fansubbers, in terms of subtitles, but as most don't seem to have the technical know-how or the desire to figure out the ins and outs of digital subtitles, they'd end up having hard subs on every show, just like in the days of VHS. If a company ever wants to commit suicide these days, that would be a damn effective way to do it. Hard subs for every DVD release! WOOHOO!

I like it when the companies at least give us descriptions of the puns and such, like Animeigo does in it's liner notes and several other companies when they do the liner notes, either on the interior insert thing or on the DVD itself.
