Hi everyone, thanks a million for coming by and helping this Neo-noob

I have saved up enough money by selling my my entire RPG collection on ebay and I am now ready to throw in some Happ parts into my Universal Pelican Sticks (don't worry, I got them both for $60, so I'm not destroying them =)

I've been reading around this "tech support area" as much as I can and there's a big debate between which stick is better, a Happ Super or Happ Competition. But no one really elaborated on them. Can you guys tell me why one stick is particularly better than the other? Such ass stiffness, sensitivity, loudness, etc.

Thanks again for the help everyone, after I learn how to solder a couple buttons and joysticks, I'll probably move up to making a MVS cab....and bother you guys again (you have been warned) :smirk:

They're both great sticks, from what I've heard.

The biggest difference seems to be the joystick knob shape. One is just a spherical knob (super) while the other is tear-drop shaped (competition).

Maybe someone can comment on the stiffness precision of the sticks.

Well if you want some semi-technical info you can go here for it:

http://www.oscarcontrols.com/joycompare/joyreview1.shtml

Other than that, I can pretty much promise that if you get a competition stick you will be much more satisfyed if you play a fair ammount of fighters. If your getting this for shmups/platformers only you may want to go with a super.

I just got done re-modding this stick for my friend. Initally he did not belive me that competitions were better for making "fighter" motions (dragon punch, hcfX2, ect.) and went with a super. He ended up having me put a competition in after about 2 months of problems.

Anyways, there is a really good thread about modding Pelican sticks over in the Unrelated forum.

-Regards

PS: I don't come around the Tech forum much anymore as other people seem to have this area taken care of, thanks for the PM. I always enjoy talking about joysticks.

EDIT: I did not answer your direct questions.

"Such as stiffness, sensitivity, loudness, etc."

Stiffness is based on what kind of spring you put in it. There are Heavy, Medium and Light springs. I belive that both have Medium springs in them. The Heavier the spring the "stiffer" it will be.

Sensitivity is probably a bas way of putting it. This is mainly going to be based on how new and what brand of microswitch you have in your stick. But if your going for which is more responsive then definatly the competetion (IMO).

They both sound the same in the RAS boxes, nothing to worry about there.

Thanks a mil ShaperMC, these two pictures alone on the website you recommended made me go with the competition:

super04_small.jpg

Happ Super: Not so "super" is it? Damn those ugly levers.....

comp04_small.jpg

Happ Competition: That's what I'm talking about

Here's the best deal I could find on ebay. Each additional button will be $1.59 each. Should I tear it up or do you know a better (cough cheaper cough) place I should go to? Oh yeah, how much would you recommend me getting a "Happ Controls push button nut wrench" (he sells them for $3.75 shipped) or do you think I won't really need one?

Thanks again SharperMC, your the only here who replied....

*crickets start chirping again*

I told you about Bob Roberts in my PM, but I would also like to recomend that you go with Competition Buttons, I prever them greatly for fighters.

An added IMO...You need more then one before deciding

(IMO) I really don't feel like getting into a heated debate over this..
You asked for an opinion I will give you mine and since you only got one..

I like Supers and Sanwas for fighters.
Shoot like them for everything this.
Also great for games like Baseball Stars 2/Metal Slug/Alpha Missions 2

Supers are soft and I can pull of any move with them..GREAT for fighting games..

I can sit there and do diagonal jumps all day with ease...without even trying for games like Samurai Shodown.

I can't do this with Competitions or Ultimate joysticks and I have all these type sticks..I switch them in and out of my Tekken 3..
I have a new set of Competitions in the Tekken 3 and I hate them but I wanted something different in that cab...a different feeling stick.

Most people that come over here to play the cabs don't like them as much as the Supers.

I won't comment on the Ultimate since I honestly haven't had them in any cab for very long..
But,they felt similar to Competitions when I did try them so I'm not even bothering with using them.

You know what I use Competition sticks for ..Puzzle Games....I put a set of them in the mini BAM cab.
In my opinion they are better for Up Down/Left Right ...less diagonal move required type games.

I put a new set of Competitions in the Neo Gold I couldn't pull of any moves with ease,The corner plastic piece that hits the switches in the Competitions just don't line up right whereas you really have to be dead on to make a diagonal move.

Where with the Supers the leaf type switches are hit must smoother and make pulling moves off much easier.
It's less clunky, more direct then a Competition stick..
Whatever direction you move a Super in your going that way..With a Competition if you just don't have the stick in the right spot it won't go the way you want.

My suggestion would be to buy one of each..or at least buy the set of Competition sticks and one Super..
Test them out yourself..
Then if you don't like the Super I'll give you the money for it..Send it to me.
I'll pay for shipping and the stick..

This way you can get a feel for both and can relate your opinion..
My opinion could be worthless, you might like the Competition sticks more.

I respect all opinions and this really depends on the Game Player themselves.

It really depends on the Game Player's feel..

You really need to test a few sticks before you are dead set on what to buy.

Here's an easy solution too..How do you feel about the sticks that are currently in the Universal Pelican Sticks..?
They seem very close to Supers in my Opinion (less the spring)

If you hate those go Competition ...

...........
I hope you get more then just two opinions on this.
There may be more people who like the Competions or other sticks.

I hate to direct someone some way and they hate what I suggested.. so think about the offer I have given and let me know.

Don't worry Chris1, this thread is so dead, the only "heat" we would get is from the summer temperature :eek_2:

I have been thinking about the "square" used in the Competition myself...I was thinking about the motion in my head, it wouldn't seem that fluid would it?

Well hopefully there will be a neogeo meet in my city soon and I can test out the joysticks

That's the part that makes a big difference to me...It just doesn't line up right at times causing for easily done move to have not been achieved.

I've sat with my cabs control panels open with a game playing watching as I move the stick(looking at the bottom) and seeing how this square sometimes will hit one switch and just just hit the other enough to pull off a move.
Whereas both switches need to be hit at the same time to pull of a diagonal move.
You have to be so dead on to fit that aquare into the corner of those two switches to achieve the move you are trying to do..
This making the sticks very aggravating at times.
There is no leeway..
With the Supers the circle piece underneath has no points/no corners to get stuck in.
It easily hits the leafs on the switches with no problems.

I'd say if you used the Competition sticks a lot then your feel for the sticks may make it where you can get that square into those corners everytime.
But don't make a mistake or slack off or you'll miss a move.
A new person to them may not be able to do it...and get very aggravated.

Since certain games need different feels Super's have more leeway where they are so easy to use.

I would say if you have used Competition sticks for years and have got used to them..(they require you to be really direct with your moverment).
Then using a Super may feel sloppy to you...

They are so damn easy to use that they may just be to easy for people..to soft.

Thanks for the help you two guys, and may I add, you guys are probably the two nicest guys on www.neo-geo.com

I just went to the neo-chatroom and asked everyone a simple question, "Should I get a Happ Competition or Happ Super?" Instead of getting a simple answer (what I was looking for), they started to gang up on me and rant on me for being a noob. Eh, I didn't want to relive highschool again, so I just pretty much gave up and left... :crying:

Once again, thanks for the help guys :buttrock:

Well Chris1 I'm going to try out a set of super's w/ hard springs that I'm getting from www.therealbobroberts.com . I currently have competition joysticks in my cab and when I get my other cab in, I'm going install them in that one. That way I can try them out and pick which one feels better for me. I'll let you know how it turns out. Laters... :smirk:
