Most of the UK and European bands on those lists actually had pretty solid careers, maybe just the one hit in the US though.

I used to love that song back in the day. It was heavy rotation on that music show that followed Arsenio...what was it called? Nia Peeble's Dance Machine or something?

Dexy's were pretty influential over here, shame they never had greater (wider ) success.

Cathy Dennis was pretty good in her career, never really found a niche for herself, the only of her own hits i remember were covers. In turn tho, she's one of the most influential women in modern music, writing the multi million no.1's "Toxic" & "Can't get you out of my head", among others.

Aprt from looking like a pair of complete fags, I loved that "Would I lie to you" by Charles and Eddie, classic stuff.

wannabe- spice girls.

Come on, everyone loved them at one point. Until they decided they could handle their own image and records, the spice girls were on top. The stupidest move they ever made was getting rid of Simon Fuller.

It was hard to pick a top ten, so I just picked ten that emerged from the 90's alt scene that I liked...

The Cardigans - Lovefool
Folk Implosion - Natural One
Tripping Daisy - I Got a Girl
Deadeye Dick - New Age Girl
Green Jelly - Three Little Pigs
Blind Melon - No Rain
House of Pain - Jump Around
Flaming Lips - She Don't Use Jelly
Gin Blossoms - Hey Jealousy
Rancid - Ruby Soho

Yes, I said the Flaming Lips (that was basically their only hit).

Honorable mentions:
Butthole Surfers - Pepper
Ben Folds Five - Brick
Hanson - MmmmBop (Shut up, they wrote their own music, and played their own instruments)
Placebo - Pure Morning

It's amazing to see who's considered a one hit wonder.

Yes, many of the bands listed on here had MANY more than one hit, like the Gin Blossoms and Spice Girls for instance. Spin Doctors also. Check out http://www.amg.com if you want to check for sure :)

mmmbop is a damn fine song :buttrock:
my sister was a huge hanson fan, so naturally i liked em too.

rancid's a one hit wonder? ...and out come the wolves was a pretty good album, but i think theyre too worried about being punk, rather than making music, the album that came out in 2000 sucked ass.

i loved the wonders - that thing you do

Rancid's latest album Indestructible sounds good to me.

I'm going to try my best here to pick songs which were really the band's only hit...

No particular order.

1. Sinead O'Connor - "Nothing Compares 2 U" (it's good because it was written by Prince!)
2. Thomas Dolby - "She Blinded Me With Science"
3. The Refreshments - "Banditos"
4. Crash Test Dummies - "Mmm mmm mmm mmm"
5. Patti Smith Group - "Because The Night" (Yes, there was an inferior cover later :-P)
6. The Buggles - "Video Killed The Radio Star"
7. Thin Lizzy - "The Boys Are Back in Town" (Total old Springsteen ripoff, but I love old Springsteen!)
8. The Proclaimers - "I'm Gonna Be"
9. Allanah Myles - "Black Velvet"
10. Spin Doctors - "Two Princes" (Had to steal this one from you guys cause I got stumped at 10)

Did you know...

Hendrix's cover of "All along the watchtower" was his only 'hit'?

P.S. - Nothing Compares 2 U is a fucking excellent song.

Yep, that crazy bald bitch really outdid herself with that one. I can still picture that video .... well, at least you can't say she just got by on her looks.

I have also read that Janis Joplin was a one-hit wonder, technically or something. Isn't she some kind of legend? For some reason it feels weird for me to call a really well known legend a one-hit wonder. No matter what. I wouldn't consider Rancid a One-Hit Wonder because "And Out Come The Wolves" had another hit on it and so did the album before it. ("Time Bomb" and "Salvation") Actually this is what makes this topic so interesting is how the heck to precisely define this whole thing. Not a big deal though. :)

Yeah, I heard someone said this before too... She said Joplin, T. Rex, and Buffalo Springfield were all One-Hit Wonders...

...Bobby Mcfaren was his name for what it's worth, and it's not worth much indeed. Some mother fucka' gonna come and steal my bed so I can't get a good nights sleep is going to get more than a pearly white smiling "Be Happy" American TC alright. I'd "Put a boot in his ass that's the American way" ala Toby Keith... that would be a more fitting resolution indeed.

I think A-Ha has about 7 albums (in English). :P (Not counting a greatest hits I think...). Among the other released songs that I remember off-hand: "The Sun Always Shines on TV"; "The Living Daylights" [title track from the James Bond film].

I tend to avoid calling people one-hit wonders as I always remember other songs released by that group that I liked and had some moderate airplay/videos.

ex: "Broken Wings" by Mister Mister (also released "Kyrie", which I liked more). :P
Cathy Dennis had "Just Another Dream", "Too Many Walls". ;)

In the States they were a *gasp!* two hit wonder :)

I think the same applies to the Spin Doctors. "Two Princes" was big, but wasnt "Jimmy Olsen Blues" pretty popular, too?
