What a wonderful memory!

I still have the following catalogs in hand..........(can you imagine that as a poor college student in the early 90's but had no money to get those wonderful 16-bit import games.............)

Once awhile I still read those old catalogs just for fun (PC Engine, Mega Drive, Supergrafx, Super Famicom....etc)

lol i still have my DHGF club card, i used to order 78 dollar saturn imports from them way back in the day, plus i'd always get the 18 dollar overnight, so it was like 98 a game  , this was back when SFC games were like 89/99 a pop, about early 96 or so..

Loved that mag...

Remember when that editor wrote all those racist comments about Asians in the preview for...what was it? Some airplane game for PS. Hilarious. Totally overlooked it the first time I thumbed through the magazine....

What was that guy's name that used Ken from Street Fighter as his picture?
Nick Rox, maybe? Really liked him...

They had a great little store out here in the valley... it's where I bought my first AES, FF, FF2, AOF, WH2...2 Old Style sticks... and many import SFC games including the first SFII! I remember I drove out there one day and the store had closed up. I was in a bad mood for weeks.

Every page was a work of art. Super high quality, thats for sure. Of course, there subscriptions sometimes left something to be desired. One of my friends bought a 4 yr. subscription from them and didn't see an issue for 6 months and even then didn't get them every month from that point on. That was back in 99' so i think they were goin under at the point. Too bad, cuz that was def a sweet read.

I remember that one with Wonder Dog on the cover. Man I loved that game. I remember I wanted to get a Wonder Mega. But instead just bought Wonder Dog for the Sega CD instead.

Definitely the best US mag ever - still to this day, the best reviews ever. It's amazing they were able to keep the magazine running as long as they did, covering obscure imports that only the hardcore cared about.

I totally agree. Many a fine dump was taken while thumbing through the pages of DG ..... *sigh*. Play is a pretty good mag, but it just doesn't seem to quite have the excitement and biting commentary that DG used to have. Oh well, it's just sad that it had to end ... :crying: :crying:

I still have my collection of gamefan mags. most of them
mid saturn, pre dreamcast till they stopped production of the magazine totally.
I even have a burning rangers issue that I had to buy off the newstand
because it took them 3 months to send that issue to my house
it actually came with a page binded in the issue apologizing for the delay.
that was the last issue I got subscription wise from them. then they came back
later on for a few more issues before totally going out of business
which I just bought off the newstand.
great collection of mags though.
the art they used are superb.
never could stand the little man with the hammer though.
terry wannabe my ass.

...yeah those were the days indeed. Die Hard Gamefan was a much better magazine than most of the crap out there right now. I only have a few of my copies lying around since the bulk of my collection got water damaged at the storage facility my family rents during a bad storm a year or so back. *Thanks for bringing back the memories though.

Hey speaking of Ol' Sega, Do you remember the Sega Channel? Man, that was way ahead of it's time and it rocked.

I always loooooooooved GameFan. LOVED. It was the shit I thought. It's still pretty damn good, but it's not as good as *I* remembered it.

About 2 years ago or so I bought a mess load of them from Neo BomberMan, and I relived the "glorious past." Surprisingly, they weren't as great as I remembered. And the reviews was very bad on second thought. No room for real substantial text and some reviews were just downright HORRIBLE.

Still, a solid solid magazine, second in the US only to the glory days of EGM. :D

BTW, Nick Rox -- a TON of Sega fans HATE NAY LOATHE HIS ASS. Do a google search under rec.games.video.sega "Nick Rox" and you'll seeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. ;)
HELLA HATE THREADS ON ROX'S ASS.
"Blue Shadows!!!!!!!!!" AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!! ;)

I hafta say though, best layouts ever. Man. You could almost eat off of them. :loco:

GameFan was where I first found out WH2 was coming out for SNES, and I remember showing to my dad that night in 1994 or whatever "DAD! YOU MUST GET THIS GAME FOR ME!!"

Oooh and their WHP review was looooovely dandy. While my friend was trying to show off his combos in SNES Killer Instinct, I was busy drooling over the WHP review. GOOD TIMES GOOD SHIT.

But on 2nd thought, slightly overrated; the mag was/is. JMO

I loved the Sega Channel. I remember staying up real late at night at the end of the month (when they rotated games in and out) just to see what new games I was getting. The Sega Channel introduced me to a lot of Genesis games that I would've otherwised not even rented, much less bought.

Oh man, I did sooooo much drooling over the DG NGH reviews. I remember them reviewing Pulstar and having like tons of screenshots, and absolutely gushing over the thing in their review. I really wanted that game ..... DG made me one envious bastard :(.

When did Diehard finally go under? The last magazine I have is from 99'. The one with the Metal Slug X review.

Yeah, I still have all those Gamefan mags I bought. They were expensive though, being imported and all...like $15 a piece.

I remember when Castlevania: SotN was previewed (the Jap version) and the guy reviewing said: "give me six a year like this and I'll be the happiest man alive".

If it weren't for them I wouldn't have known about a lot of import only gems, like Brave Prove and Princess Crown.

Gamefan one of my favorite game magazine of all time i didn't catch on too it when it was frist publish. About time i did the days of the snes, genesis were geting close to a end. I'm glad i did from that point on read every issue of Gamefan that came out afther words up untill it was kill by those corperate bastard that ran the magazine into the ground it's a shame magazine like this are not around any more. Oh and i do remember befor Gamefan when Diehard were just a importer i use to look at there catalouge wishing i could aford all those imports that they sold. I all so remember gamefan was only magazine that seem to care about reviewing import saturn titles other magazine just diss it for no reason at all. What i wouldn't give to see a magazine like that agian but i know in this age hype and glitz it will never happen.

The final issue of GameFan is from December 2000. I remember picking it up and then going to their website. The website said that they were going down in the "anals" of history. So that was the last and final issue. I wish that I had picked up that issue when I had the chance. I guess I didn't know that it was going under until it was too late.

Yep, the magazine is definitely missed. Are there any true enthusiast mags anymore? I tried reading Play, but found their layout and aesthetics to be poor. GMR has had its moments, but that's about it for me. I miss a lot of classic gaming mags.. GameFan, Game Players, Gamers Republic, EGM (90's era), PC Accelerator..

Best gaming magazine EVAR!

I have all issues from Vol. 2 Issue 3 through to sometime in 1997, and sporadic issues after that. I wish I had them all, but I cancelled my subscription at one point because the magazines were arriving EXTREMELY late and/or damaged, so I ended up buying them at the store. Then the stores around here no longer carried them (and they went without somr issues for a spell, and I thought they were gone).
