well, after working at safeway for 3 months, i finally saved up $350, now i originally was planning to save the money....but my mp3 player broke, so now i am in need of a new one.

my old one cost me about $200, nice sony one, but i didnt have case, so it kept knocking around in my backpack till it broke.

so, is the Ipod a good mp3 player choice? i already have 400+ songd ( illegall of course :smirk: ), and will probobly put all the cd's i have on it. the 15 gig one holds 3700 songs !!

so, how is it?

consider the ipod the rolex of mp3 players...

price high, quality high...
does the same thing as any mp3 player.

you can still tell time on a timex...etc...

I recently got one of the newer 20 gig iPods - it's absolutely amazing. I use it all the time - I've spent hours and hours ripping CDs to iTunes to stick on this thing.

if your last MP3 player got knocked around like that, i doubt the ipod is practical for you. actually, the ipod isn't practical in any case. it's a nice device, but i wouldn't carry it around so casually after paying that much for it. it's too expensive and delicate for something to be used casually and practically.

exactly

I'd become over protective

in some ways taking away any pleasure that would be derived from said device

Kind of like my old AES collection that I sold off because I was scared that playing the games might ruin it's "mintness"

I know it sounds kinda weird, but you could always get the iPod protective casing.
Honestly, though, they're sturdier than the look, especially starting with the second generation models.

The choice is yours, but the iPod is definitely a cool device and I recommend one.

Yep, I definitely recommend the iPod. I have a 30 gig one about 2/3 of the way full. My dad has a 40 gig one and is really close to running out of space. I can't wait until Apple releases an even higher capacity iPod. :D

They have one already - it's called the Power Mac/Powerbook with a second hard drive dedicated to audio only. :mr_t:

Ok, I'll stop being a moron for a second to give Abdul a piece of advice - get the real iPod, though, not the iPod mini. The price is almost the same as a regular one and you get smaller storage. True, the unit is smaller but it's not like the iPod is big to begin with. Besides, you can buy skins for the iPod to dress it up so save your cash.
Just my two cents. :glee:

I'll also say that while the iPod is obviously pricey, unless you plan on throwing it in bodies of water, dragging it through mud puddles, and generally treating it like shit, there's no need to be overprotective of it. When it's not charging, keep it in a slipcase. When it's in your pocket or bag or whatever, keep it in some kind of case or shell. Unless you're really careless with it, it's not going to break on you.

Too much cash for me. It's really cool and all, but I don't travel or spend enough time on the road to even come close to justifying something like that.

I use the Nomad Zen Xtra. For about $10 more than the 5 GB iPod Mini (~$260-$270), you get 30 GB of space. If you want the same thing from an iPod, you'd end up paying at least $100 more.

The Nomad Zen Xtra weighs a little more than the iPod, and is a little bigger, but it works really well. I've had it for a couple of months now and haven't had any issues. The user interface supposedly isn't as nice as the iPod (I've never used an iPod, so this is just what 'they' say).

I'm guessing you'll likely go for the iPod, since that's the route everyone else has gone that has created a 'what's the best MP3 player' thread.

The mp3 playing memory sticks are way nicer then the ipods imo.

They are solid as can be, don't have moving parts, so no hick-ups during workout etc.

And they are a lot cheaper as well.

But you've got to settle with 528 MB in stead of the many gigs that ipods have to offer..

I would save the $350 and just hum songs to myself. I like cash. Oh yes, I love cash.

I give the iPod a resounding Hell Yes. One of the best gadgets ive ever bought (and thats alot.)

The build quality, interface, integration with itunes, etc is all far far above anything else on the market. And the sound quality is at least equal to the best of the competition, if not better (though some different headphones makes a big difference, i like etymotics er-4p).

Ok!!! This may be a stupid question. Please don't flame. I just want an answer. Can you record songs from CD's to an MP3 player? All I know is that you can download songs from a PC to an MP3 player but not whether you can take songs from actual CD's into an MP3 player.

Well, you have to put the CD into your computer first..
in the case of iTunes, put the CD in your computer, hit the "import" button in itunes, wait a few minutes for it to rip the songs to mp3 or AAC, and you are done. The next time you plug the ipod in, it copies the new songs over.

its really quite brilliant. Plus itunes makes a great (free!) mp3 player / organizer / music CD burner.

What's a nice affordable MP3 player then since what I take from this thread is that the Ipod is like the BMW of MP3 players?

What do you call affordable? I have the Creative Nomad Zen Xtra Jukebox with 30 GBs of space and it only ran me $260-$270.

As far as ripping songs from CDs to an MP3 player, you can use iTunes, as commented above, or if you buy a player from someone other than Apple (you can't use iTunes to transfer files to ANY other player other than an iPod) I believe most offer you the ability to rip from the CD right to the player. If you use iTunes to rip MP3s from CDs with any other MP3 player other than the iPod, you will be forced to use another application to send the MP3 to the player. Most players come with software to rip/send MP3s to the player.
