Being a die hard fan of Mamoru Oshii's Kerberos Panzer Cops/JIN-ROH and the "Protect Gear" they wear, it was a no brainer that "Teh Merc" would be drooling in anticipation over the soon to be released game KILL ZONE, and is even one of the few reasons {Save MGS III, Shellshock NAM '67} that I finally bought another PS2... but I just learned today that...

We do not get to play as the "Orange Spectacled" Helghast soldiers, but rather we're apart of some rag tag group fighting them off? ---FUCK! *I was hoping to get "into the zone" by donning the freggin' wanna be "Protect Gear" and going Kill Krazy on someone else, or being the invader for a change. Why is it that we can never be the freggin' bad guys in video games like this? I mean it's the GUNDAM political "Civil War" on an Intergalactic scale all over again. One should be able to choose which side they wish to be affiliated with. *I'm wondering if I should HATE MAIL Guerrilla Games or not... or at least send them a "Hey man, give us a fuckin' choice" kind of letter. HEREZ to hoping that in online death matches we're allowed to at least play a Helghast soldier.

...freckin' sons of bitches!

Two words: Politically Correct  :very_ang:

I'm all against it, I can tell you that much.

Many people are complaining about GTA but damn that's the only series on top of my head where you get to play the "bad" side...

A thing I would love to be able to do is play the Axis side on any WWII game. For example, how about a Japan campaign in Call of Duty?

A Japan campaign would be nice. But a German campaign of Call of Duty would RULE. Nuff said.

Political Correctness should have no place in video games IMO. *A gamer should have the "right" to CHOOSE which side they are affiliated in a video game. Like with the GUNDAM poll I had a day or so ago... Personally I'd have fought for the Zeon Archduchy not the Federation, but at least BANDAI started making games where one can "Choose" their sides and not stereotyping one side versus the other. But I guess all the non-Political Correctness is with "Guerrilla Games" other project of SHELL SHOCK: NAM '67.

*That's a good point that I hadn't thought of. Even so, it should still be an option to be the side invading the planet of Vecta as seen through the eyes of a mere grunt within the Helghast Military system. Every side has their story to tell... who knows maybe a "Gaiden" will be made or a series of novels based on the games. *Shit I could pen the dang things myself from the Helghast P.O.V.

just play some GTA

I think that's one of the reasons the game is so sucessful

sometimes, when I'm bored I'll run over all the pedestrians and get out of the car and beat him merciless with a bat and I'll keep doing it long after their dead and I'll do it just to do it, some fucking you up shit, squashing your fucking puny brains all over the place, and you'll look for god, but you won't find him, you'll find me and a Louieville Slugger.

In all honesty I cannot stand the GTA franchise. In those kinds of games I prefer the not-so-free-roaming "Somewhat free but linear" missions of stuff like Max Payne or The Getaway. *I do think it's high time gamers get to choose what side their on in games {especially FPS games} because even if the game in question might be based on historical events... you cannot simply act like the other side didn't happen. In all honesty while I do not agree with Hitler's views, the "SS" or the Nazi, the genocide committed against the Jews and what not... it doesn't mean I'd never want to play the Germans in a MOH game or something. Starting off a mere grunt who was pushed into the German war machine and is merely trying to survive. Trying to hold back the allies at Normandy etc. Possibly taking part in the plot to assassinate Hitler along with Rommel and a few other high echelon members of the German army.

...in the case of KILL ZONE it wouldn't be as distastefull at all. It's a future war inspired on real life battles of the 20th Century. ---I don't see what's wrong with being able to play as one of the "Invaders". I'm sure those invaders have feelings too... some probably questioning their reason for being there etc. *Though I admit part of my malfunction with this on the "Kill Zone" note has more to do with wanting to know what it would be like to be running around as a heavily armored troopers in the vein of Oshii's Kerberos Panzer Cops/JIN-ROH

I think it has as much to do with development time as anything, Merc. A second story doesn't sound like much but that's a lot of extra work.

I would shoot down whoever would make that campaign.
What the Japanese and Nazis did in WWII is nothing to be made a game.
I, for one, was happy to play as valiant American, British, and Russian forces in Call of Duty. That was a beautiful game, and I'd rather not play as war criminals.

Believe me, it's NOT a lightly emotional issue.
It's the equivalent of playing as Hitler for Jews... playing as Satan for Christians... playing as eh... a Japanese soldier for Chinese and Koreans...

Hell. Would Americans want to play a game where they pilot a plane into the WTC?

While I can respect your PERSONAL feelings and righteous indignation on this, I still disagree. Since GOD himself gave man "Choice" why should game developers because their afraid of offending some dip shit somewhere cause they're over sensitative not make something playable. Sure the Germans and Japanese did some Evil shit back in the day, but that doesn't make their stories any less interesting... and not everyone agreed with what they were doing either, creative liberties could be taken here since it's a game. I'm not talking about games where you play Joesph Mingala {however his name is spelled} where you're conducting human experiments on Jews, or a Japanese Kempeitai officer torturing and maiming the Chinese and there own people... we're talking a simple "CHOICE" to play things out from a different P.O.V. within the war spectrum is all. Within that I see nothing distastfull at all, but I'm sure you'll disagree.

@ Underdog: Yeah I see your point about having to take more time to implement "Alternate" stories depending on what the gamer would choose {i.e. "which side your on"} ...but this is where I'd go the NINTENDO route with the whole Quality over Quantity mindset. KILL ZONE has taken 2 years of dev time to get this far, I'd have rather waited another half year to get to play from both P.O.V.s myself.

Meh just go and play the Battlefield games. Sure its not totally the same since there is no story but hell every day i'm running through the jungle with an AK-47 mowing down American and ARVN troops who get in my way. And before Battlefield Vietnam i was driving german tanks and piloting Japanese Zeros (sometimes into battleships) in BF 1942.

Get a brain, man. And once you get it, go read some history books. Not fifth-grade history books, but the real deal.

were we playing as the good guys in Metal Slug 1 or Nam 1975? That was never really established.
