A Side) Float On
B Side) I’ve Got It All (Most)

I know nothing about this guy aside from what I’ve heard on the radio. The single was catchy, the 45 was cheap ($2.00), and I was at the record store anyway... so I bought it. I have to say, I’m rather impressed. “Float On” has a delightful, almost haunting guitar riff swirling amongst a tempest of funky chaos. The song, upon repeated listening, reveals myriad layers of sound... creating, in effect, a heterogenous patchwork of different styles that blend seamlessly together. I’m not sure why, but this guy reminds me of Brak (from Space Ghost CTC) when he sings. Take that however you want to... “I’ve Got It All (Most)” is more straightforward, both in sound and arrangement. To its credit, the song does build well, and the Oriental gong right before the heavy guitar riff is a nice touch. The lyrics are typical poetic nonsense, but I give the guy credit for singing clearly enough so that I might attempt to understand the song.

I was organizing some of my oft-neglected records (mostly indie rock stuff when I was buying anything on vinyl I could get my hands on) when I came upon my Badly Drawn Boy LP. I gave it a quick spin as I was organizing my collection and discovered, much to my amazement, how many songs I genuinely enjoyed. Modest Mouse and BDB work on a similar retro-vibe, so it’s little surprise that I enjoyed my little 45 in all its anachronistic glory.

Perhaps I will have to go back and revisit some of my indie rock records when I have the time...

I've always been curious about this band so I downloaded "float on" real quick from kazaa. Sounded pretty good for a few seconds and then it turned into incredibly weird electronic noises (obviously not the actual song) I guess there's some kind of piracy-protect or something? Oh well just thought I'd mention. I guess I'll never know.

I like 'Float on', but I can't find an mp3 of it. All the people on Kazaa don't realize that to simply press SHIFT when putting in a CD will disable most copy protection.

That's a good band. Got good news... Can't say I've adapted to the whole CD yet, but there's this one song on there that sounds like a Mr. Bungle song. The whole CD is real moody. Nice.

I ran my car into a COP car the other day/Well he drove sometimes life's ok/I ran my mouth off a bit too much oh what did I say?/While you laughed it off so it must be ok

Or something like that. Crazy lyrics. I like offbeat lyrics like that. Don't care for the pink album cover tho. :tickled:

Funny you say that, I just started listening to Mr.Bungle's first album again today. California is by far their best, although they are all so different. You should give tomahawk a listen, another of Patton's awesome groups.

It's great more people are starting to get hooked on Modest Mouse. I've been addicted for a while now. Lately I've been hooked on Rooney, though. they have a twist of 60's rock with a more modern approuch. If you like Modest Mouse, you may enjoy Rooney.

I saw Rooney live at Lollapalooza 2003. In fact, the frontman came down to where we were sitting (about 8th or 9th row) and started chatting it up with some bloke he knew. Which, upon recollection, was quite humorous considering there was a very large gentleman behind us who was absolutely mad about this band. And, as soon as he got up and left, that’s when Mr. Frontman showed up. Someone told him when he returned and it just about broke his heart. All in all, consummate showmen they were. My ex-ish pseudo-girlfriend tried to get me hooked on them. I’ve seen their CD at Target for some paltry amount. 43¢ or something. That figure might not be accurate, but it was pretty cheap. Maybe one day...

Usually, when I make a post like the first one I made, I expect someone to make me an mp3 (generally because they love me).
