Aesthetically, the movie was beautiful. The scenery, the music, the lighting. It's a great movie to watch.

Horrible horrible movie. After hearing so much about it I finally got a hold of it and didn't even finish watching it b/c of how boring it was, I disliked the scenery and soundtrack in particular.

If you think this setting is great, you need to check out Konami's game Snatcher. Same atmosphere...great soundtracks too!

You and my wife should compare notes then. She HATES the film as well. *I think you have to either be a fan of the Future Noir/Cyber Punk sub genre of Sci-Fi... just let yourself go and immerse yourself into the atmoshpere of the film overall and try to look at it as an old 40's Film Noir that just happens to have Cyborgs and take place in 2019. When the movie debuted at the Cinema in 1982 the term "Cyberpunk" had yet to be coined, Gibson had yet to write/publish Neuromancer and people were drawn into the majesty of it all. The problem my wife had with the film was that it "moved too slow" and didn't have enough action in her opinion.

---Well that's the point. It's 1 part future noir, 2 parts social commentary and all about the journey of a man to find out what he is through those he hunts. Could be used on many levels as a metaphor for life itself no different than how THE MATRIX films are today. The other reason you hated it was because it was indeed built up by people like me, and you were expecting to be blown out your seat. In a "Post Matrix" world that's not going to happen, but if you watch it again for what it's for, you might find you like it. I personally hated the film the first 3 times I saw it, but then something happend on the 4th viewing, and getting to see the Director's Cut on the big screen in 1999 when A.F.I. had their Top 100 films of all time in select theatres was one of the better cinematic moments of my life.

nothing special.

i am a harrison ford fan and a cyber punk fan but i didnt particularily care for the setting or acting or characters or plot. i had to force myself through it just to say i saw it before. i watched it maybe 2 or 3 more times to try and see but nothing happens. just average movie.

well i was just going to ask to recommend to me the best cyber punk movies. i like reading cyber punk and i like player cyber punk games, but i hardly seen cyber punk movies!

i think blade runner may be the only one i saw. i never watch sci fi channel i think its stupid so maybe i miss a lot of cyber punk on there. i like a different form of cyberpunk i think, involving anarchy and hacking and a complex overly technological world or something. blade runner only had the cyber punk futuristic setting and ford didnt make me like his character! i give it a 6/10. didnt hate it but didnt like it.

Meh. I also saw this and enjoyed it, but it gets far too much recogintion IMO. Just slightly above average IMO.

Matt

Edit: ANd I think 5th element is a pos that should have never been created. Man what a horrible movie.

Most "cyber punk" cinema, in my opinion, falls on the barest outskirts of what I'd call "cyber punk". Blade Runner to me, is the most cyberpunk film of all time, aside from its format (noir), the film oozes the cyber punk aesthetic: overcrowding and dirty megaopolis, neon signs everywhere, rain-slicked streets, computers and technology permeating every aspect of the culture (the umbrella with the illuminated handle is real nice), etc etc.

To this end, the most "cyber punk" films I can readily think of are:

-Akira
-Freejack
-Hackers (modern day setting, but it was a pretty foward thinking movie for its time, pre-dated the whole internet/raver culture explosion)
-Brazil
-The Fifth Element
-Johnny Mnemonic
-Total Recall
-Judge Dredd (go back and watch this again if you disagree)
-The Matrix (to an extent, and did anyone ever get the Shadowrun connection?)

Bear in mind I said these are "cyber punk" films and did not comment on their actual QUALITY. However, I even like Johnny Mnemonic for its aesthetic, despite its rather rambling plot.

Other movies that are called cyber punk that I disagree with are:
-A Clockwork Orange
-THX 1138
-1984
-Minority Report

These films are utopian/dystopian in their aesthetic, cyber punk only uses such societies as its backdrop, and does not focus on it. Plus I can't stand the 60s trend of depicting the future as a box with harsh backlit walls everywhere. I don't think mankind wants to live in a doctor's office all day.

No I'm hoping the future's going to be like Soylent Green.

Just finished reading 'Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep'.

I was really surprised how radically different the setting and some of the characters were. I knew the movie wasn't a straight adaptation, but I wasn't expecting the book to be that different.

The parts about Mercerism were weird, the Android Police Station was weird, and the Electric Sheep were definitely very weird. I'm almost glad they weren't in the movie... they would have detracted from the film's simplicity.

Still it was a great read, and highly recommended.

I just watched "Immortel (Ad Vitam)" and recommend it to any Blade Runner fan.

Its a French film by Enki Bilal (who also wrote/draw the comic like 20 years ago).

The movie is very interesting, takes place in NYC in 2095. The film itself is a mix of real actors and CGI, definitely not perfect but contribute to the dark atmosphere and unconfortable feeling you have all along the film.
