It's the same thing people did with the release of the PS2. I remember seeing several PS2 'boxes and receipt' on eBay. No surprises here, people are stupid and can't read.

While I agree that there was some embarassingly crazy behaviour there from a fellow Brit - but I do think this whole 'misrepresentation' and deceit is a bit 'off'.

Do you agree with this kind of selling - I'm undecided.....

Although - what price for stupidity? Well £115.00 and £5 for postage at the moment!

I don't really agree with it, but if people can't read a description, this is a good and expensive lesson in learning to read. The seller should have been a little more up front and been specific, but then how would he make that much money?

If I were the buyer, I would have taken the negative and save myself the equivalent of $200+ USD

Now if only international bidders could read English when you say 'no international bids, internal US only...'

It's pretty much amazing to see how one can spend so much cash on a single box without reading carefully the contents of the auction.

Anyone knows how much was the reserve price set up?

This final price is insane. Pure comedy gold.

I don't think anyone "agrees" with this type of selling. ok, the buyer was dumb, but the seller was clearly out to deliberately con someone. If he wassn't he would have put "This auction is the the console BOX only, no console/controllers/leads included."

I hate misleading auctions. I once bought a games of this guy I thought was in near mint condition (the description said "great condition" and the pic -a genuine photo not a stock picture- looked great). It arrived in average condition (not like in the pic), and I emailed the seller about it and he replied saying "where in the auction description does it say the item is the same as in the picture?". My reply? "CUNT". Ok, it wasn't much money so I didn't really lose out, but still, I thought it was very misleading.

Very misleading my ass. You got scammed. "where in the auction description does it say the item is the same as in the picture?" dosn't cut it.

If it said "this item in the picture is in SIMILAR condition to the item for sale in the action", wouldn't pass the sniff test either.

If it said "this item in the picture is similar to the item you are bidding on, but the item you are biding may be of equal or lesser quality", and list the actual quality in the discription, then it would be kosher.

Unfortunately, the example you gave is a classic case of fraud. It's called "the bait-and-switch." You bid on and paid money for a "near-mint" item, what you got was an "avarage" item. He clearly sent you something that wasn't in the auction discription. Therefore: scam.

(sadly, ebay being the way it is now, makes a terrific breeding ground for these ass parasites)

I'm sorry to hear you were conned, good job not too much cash involved - touch wood I haven't been shafted yet on ebay or on the market here, things have gone well.

The general feeling seems to be here that it is wrong but that to certain extent buyers take some responsibility for being 'stupid'.

I have to be honest it took a couple of goes looking at the auction to realise what was going on - I didn't notice straight away it was a box only after a few views did I see the title properly and the description. In the heat of the moment with e-bidding being so quick and easy it could happen to many poor souls.

I guess if we all help each other out here we should do ok! ;)

All right, I've gone through the house and rounded up all the Console boxes I think I can live without. Now, I will alter the boxes (possibly an LED?) and sell them as modded boxes, jacking up the price 400%. Well, maybe I won't, but it's an idea...

He's not hiding anything about his auction. This kind of selling is the kind a normal person would encounter on any given day of the week, deceptive and sneaky.

People just need to learn how to deal with the world when their head is lodged in their ass.
