Pointless requirements when updating profile

Why must I enter my/any birthday and possibly even write some nonsense in the biography box or more before being able to update my account?

Yes I could enter any day and yes if anything having it public might even generate more replies in a birthday thread but as a matter of principle, why is pointless optional info required?
