i agree that all elderly drives should be re-tested. it should be elderly that are 60+. if they have a health issue that makes them unable to drive, they should have their license revoke. they should be re-tested every year. here in california, we need this stuff because some old lady died out here in san diego by plowing her car into a hotel.

I'm sympathetic to their rights and all, but they should be competent. People's lives are on the line here.

Anyone who lives in L.A. might remember a couple years ago (give or take a year...memory fading...) an elderly driver lost control of his car ramming into a farmer's market in Santa Monica, and killed about a dozen people. Seriously. They think he had a heart attack or something and when he tried to jam on the brake, he stomped the accelerator instead, and just plowed into a slew of unsuspecting shoppers. It looked like Beruit. When I saw it on the news, I thought it was a terrorist attack at first. Tents and tarps set up all over to treat the wounded, dead bodies covered with sheets, ambulances and cops everywhere, the sky full of helicopters...

They should be re-tested.

hell yes! my grandfather is 80+ and half blind, and he still drives around everywhere. I think all drivers should be retested every 10 years (maybe every 5 years for 65+). Driving tests have become progressively more difficult over the years.

Nearly every day here there is a traffic jam caused by an old couple going 25 in the 45.

I remember that and a couple other incidents. I agree that they should be re-tested. I've almost been taken out by quite a few elderly drivers.
I distinctly remember a lady who could barely see over the steering wheel swerving all over the road...that was scary!

Sounds like the South Park episode "Grey Dawn" isn't too far out :D (well, at least up until the point where the old people take over the town ;))

Yes, elderly drivers should be re-tested. At least my grandparents have my parents drive them around when it's dark outside. They know that neither of them are the most competent drivers these days.

I agree.

Yeah, I saw it on the news. I was rather surprised when I saw it; I actually went into that hotel not so long ago, before the accident.

In Spain, they ARE retested. I am not sure of how often, but I know my grandmother (70 years old now) had to do it at least a couple of times.

I think it's a case of people bitching about their civil rights being "invaded" by the evil government, and getting their way - despite the fact that it's dangerous to the public.

Its crazy :oh_no: !

in this country old people have to declare that they are not fit to drive but usually its too late they have already gone blind, deaf and mental - then killed innocent people - then after these tragedies they are declared unfit to drive!

Anyway it won't get better - there will be even more of the buggers as in developing countries old people out number young people

Speaking from someone whos been hit by an older couple, I do infact think they should be retested every 5 years after the age of 65.

no liscense for anybody ober 80 under any circumstance. they should get free bus passes.

anone over 60 get tested ever year. not only driving but reflexes too. just make them stand there and have some employee walk past ever couple of minutes and pretend to do a karate chop to their face and scream real loud. if they dont react or try to block it too slow they dont get a liscense PERIOD.

i will be dead long b4 that so i dont care.

I think your plan for testing for reflexes is excellent...but, it shouldn't just be reserved for older people...there are to many fucking wus-ass bastards out there...you need to have at least some balls if you're going to be out there controlling a gigantic machine, that can potentially kill people!

I say yes because I know what happened to my parents driving skills after 60. They don't drive anymore, but it was tough being one of the "children" confronting your parent about giving up there drivers license.
