Anyone playing COH (City of Heroes) MMORPG?

The folks in my local paper'n'dice RPG group finally got me to break down and try my first MMORPG -- City of Heroes. Ein_boser_Schotte and I have been enjoying the hell out of it. I'm wondering if there are any other n-g.com members playing COH. If so, when do you usually play (days/hours), and on which server? Perhaps those of us that are playing could form an n-g.com supergroup? Ein_boser_Schotte and I have been playing on the Guardian server. I'm usually online between 7pm and midnight (Pacific time), playing a character named "Dash Bleu." E_b_S can be found running his character, "Tartan Avenger," while I'm at work (9-5pm), or sometimes after I log off (after midnight).

I sign on Guardian as Beau Garrison or Mr Panda sometimes. ;)

I'm not on often enough to form a supergroup though. =S

COH is my first MMO, too and GOD is it fun. The developers did a great job in recreating the comic booky feel :) I'm usually on Protector after 5 with a couple of my characters there (The Euphrates Kid, Crescent) but I'm thinking of making one for Virtue, the official RP server.

The only drawback is the utter lack of creavity on some ppl's parts. How many Wolvies/Punishers/Hulks need there be?

Indeed. When I started playing, the vast majority of the other Level 1s running thru the tutorial with me were these huge, bald, tattooed, ogre-things that made me wonder how many of these folks had ever read a comic book and were simply here to take a break from Everquest. The clever/creative characters aren't easy to find, but I think that just makes 'em cooler when you do run across 'em. On the Guardian server, I've seen some (physically) faithful recreations of Freakazoid!, Guile, and Astaroth. We saw a half-naked male & female duo named Romeo & Juliet last night. Just as we were commenting on how cool it was that 2 players actually bothered to create their characters with a duo in mind, we turned around to see Jake Blues & Elwood Blues -- Ein_boser_Schotte and I had been talking about doing this not 5 days earlier! As far as clever/creative ORIGINAL characters go, I've seen a few of these as well -- they just don't stick to my 30-second Goldfish Memory as the recreationist characters do. One thing that does really disappoint me quite a bit, tho', is that less than 3% of the characters I've clicked on for "INFO" actually have their Description (origin story) filled in. Even if you just slap together something hokey for the Description when building your character, at least it would show a little effort (not to mention giving the character the semblance of being a character, rather than just a string of powers attached to a name).

lol speaking of recreations...I saw the funniest shit last night. Some guys had assemebled a kick ass Star Trek team. Spock, McCoy, a few away team members and of course Kirk who , when pulling out his gun, yelled "Kahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhn!"

I'm on, I play on the Pinnicle server (of whatever) with some friends of mine. We've started a little super group and like most people, enjoy running around beating up thugs. I had originally planned on checking into Lineage II (I was in the beta for both games) but City of Heroes was just vastly superior. A bit more action oriented then your regular "click enemy, watch fight" MMORPG game. My character is called "The Metal Magician". I had a gag character on the beta called Hebrew Justice, but I decided not to revive him on the actual game.

That Star Trek team is the funniest thing I've heard yet. That's as good as my friend and his old character "Captain of Industry" (he designed the character soley around the newspaper emote).

AWESOME! Haven't seen these guys yet, but Ein_boser_Schotte claimed to have seen the Spock the other night. I was wondering about the possibility of a character design based on the yellow-jogging-suit bride from Kill Bill Vol. 1 -- apparently so was someone else: I saw "The Bill Kill" on the Guardian server last night.

Just before I logged off yesterday, I saw my 3 faves thus far: RadioactiveMann, FalloutBoy, and (best of all) Duffmann. RM is a Tanker-type, FB is a Blaster-type (IIRC) w/radiation-oriented powers, and DM has an assortment of healing/support powers (apparently, "that wonderful Duff" is the taste that refreshes).

I've got two characters on Freedom:

Psyclown = Level 7 Magic/Controller
Crying Freeman = Level 7 Natural/Scrapper

I haven't decided if I'm going to continue playing though...

It's a really fun game that I would love to put more time into, but I'm still currently addicted to FFXI and trying to split what little free time I have between two MMORPGs is not allowing me to fully utilize the fun factor between either of these games.

I'll probably give it a couple months and see how it goes, but as it stands now, I basically have to choose between FFXI or CoH, and FFXI is in the lead.

(and my characters own originality wise, especially Psyclown :) )

So you can create whatever character you want?

I may have to check this out. What's the monthly fee?
Well, just about any character you want. The terms of service indicate that you're not allowed to make a character whose appearance and/or name would constitute a violation of a 3rd party's copyright (not that the TOS seem to be stopping folks from making their own versions of copyrighted characters, as mentioned earlier in this thread). Also, there are no capes yet. The game designers have indicated that they want to add capes to the character design process, but they won't do it until they have the code perfected. You're limited to 3 body types, too: female, male, and huge male. You can vary the height of your character, tho', and the huge number of variant hairstyles, tattoos, clothes, accessories, colors, etc. really allow a huge range of possible designs, even with that 3-body-type limitation.

The first month is free, and then it's $15 per month after that.

Penny Arcade linked to a rather informative review of COH the other week -- unfortunately, the link isn't working now. Instead here's a LINK to the Penny Arcade editorial in which Tycho espoused a number of the game's nice features, and provided that link.

Basically, yeah, the limit's your imagination. The only thing that the create a character mode needs are a)capes (which is supposed to come in under a month ) and b)jetpacks! I would love to make a Rocketeer styled hero and c) shields

The gameplay is really fun and CoH really out GTA'ed GTA by making a true city. I'll never forget the huge smile I had when I was beating upa baddie and he decided to run ---he hopped over a fence, hopped on a dumpster, and up a fire escape! And I could follow him and duke it out on the rooftop!

I've just created (yet) another guys, Soldier Blade, on the Guardian server. I'm currently handling so many guys, that none of em hit double digits in levels yet lol

I was thinking these exact same things whilst playing COH this week.

You're on the Guardian server now? Cool! When are you usually online (days of the week, hours of the day, etc.)? I'm still using my original character, but since I don't get to log more than a few hours a night, a few nights a week, he only just hit Level 9 last night (he's also been running around solo for the most part -- the xp seem to build up much more quickly when you're running 'round in teams).

Ok, now that I'm home, here's a rundown of my heroes and their servers...

Victory Server - Hard Target (Natural/Blaster) - Blaxplotation movie - styled character.

Guardian Server - Red Velvet (Tech/Controller) - Mind controller. Very cheesy origin, that I refuse to get into lol

Triumph Server - Soldier Blade (Mutant/Scrapper) - Just recently created and my fave so far w/ a pretty lengthy origin (forced into being a Capt. America type due to his mutation).

Protector Server - The Euphrates Kid (Magic/Tanker) - my second favorite. Punk college student gets zapped by the Eye of Horus on a trip to a museum and assumes the god's power ( and yes, i know The Euphrates isnt in Egypt..i just liked the ring of it ;) )

I'm usually on solidly between 9-midnight EST, though I may pop in ocassionally before. Oh, did you see the announcement on the CoH pafe? Theres gonna be a Test server for players to enter in order to , well, test out the new features.

Hadn't heard about the test server yet -- I'll have to give Ein_boser_Schotte a heads-up on that, as he's usually available & eager to do playtests. It's looking like I might not get any time to play COH tonight or tomorrow night, but I should be back on Saturday. Your 9pm-12am EST schedule coincides pretty well with my usual after-work 7pm-11pm PST schedule. If you're on Guardian tonight or tomorrow night, look for Tartan Avenger, Ein_boser_Schotte's character (he uses my account when I'm not playing) -- I believe he's currently at Level 12 or 13.

I'm either on the Infinity server, as Kumagai Toshiro (a Hokuto Shin Ken user no less, or at least as faithful as I can be given the circumstances) or on Protector, as Pepsi Man (you'll notice him by the Yin Yan symbol on his chest and wielding an ice sword sometimes). I'm on sporadically, though, since I play it over at my friend Tyler's.

last I heard they were working on an expansion patch or something like that called "City of Villains" which would address those concerns of yours...

ya o know tyhey are but im not going to pay $30 for a halfassed pvp addon that prolly wont even be legit. chances are fighting will have to take place in arenas or be consentual (ie a pvp toggle you can turn off and on). it will not and cannot be integrated into the game fully if it is not there from the get go.

too bad too cuz this game could have been badass. instead its carebear pussy shit.

The game is called "City of Heroes"

If you don't want to be a hero, but would instead like to spend all your time killing other human players, you know how to pick up a copy of Star Wars Galaxies or Planetside, and get it done with. Personally, I think CoH is far improved for NOT having the PVP crowd included.

The community in CoH = mostly people who want to play as superheroes. They like to team up, and play the good guys. (while some Everquest fanboys have obviously gotten lost, they only power level for a little while before moving on)

The community in most MMO's = dominated by player killer and PVP jackasses who generally act like cunts.

I'll take the former. :emb:

WRONG!

there hasnt been a good pvp game since ultima online. the majority (read: all) of mmorpg is dominated by carebear pussies. no room for pvp cept on a pvp server (halfassed and no fun). thats why i still play uo (free shard) and not some new pos.

and even super heroes have rivals and fight one another. they dont fly around clicking on punks all day long.

I didn't say Everquest or SWG were good. I said that'd be the result of adding it to CoH.

CoH and Ultima Online may both be MMORPG's, but they're not the same kind of game. As as Richard Grriot pointed out, there are many reasons most MMO's have chosen a more Everquest-like route, and nearly none have taken an Ultima Online type route.

If what you want is Ultima Online, CoH is not it. It wsn't a secret this game would launch without PVP. They've spoken a few times of patching in a "Hero Tournament" in thefuture for rivalries, and if that's too pussy tugh titties- this game isn't for you.

yah i know coh is just like the other 40 MMOG out there. run around killing AI shit and putting stuff in your bank. im gonna laugh my ass of when some no name developer releases a uo style mmorpg and steals all the moneys. and 3d needs to be fucked in the ass.

and by good pvp game i mean a game with a fully integrated pvp system. there hasnt been once since uo. there is either a toggle or zone style pvp system or a free for all kill fest. both are extremely lame and totally unoriginal. chances are coh will have the former.

This game is awesome. It's so much better then the rest of the MMORPG crap were you just kill dragons and it feals like work. It's just plain fun to play.

I play on the Virture server, sucks it's so damed crowded.

I use Vir Megator and he's a level 17 MindController

and I made Doctorine Dark from the Street Fighter Ex games.

Send me a tell, i'm usually on as Vir, so say hi and we'll bust some heads!
