My dad really, really wanted to see it so I went. Not too fond of the gaggle of semi-historical cookie cutter action/drama films that have come out since Braveheart re-sparked the genre though.

For me it was A) Too long, B) There are no real gods in it WTF?, C) Really tries to fuck with you- i.e. manipulates the audience a little more than I normally like. We KNOW Hector dies, ok? Stop dragging it out so fucking long.

The good? Well the chick that plays Hellen of Troy is an amazing piece of heavily mascara'd ass. Saffron Bourroughs who plays Hector's wife looks like she's turned into a combination of a dessicated Egyptian mummy and Calista Flockheart though. And she was so hot in thet 'Deep Blue Sea' too.

Brad Putt is a great actor. He turned in an excellent performance here. But there really is no way around the miscasting. He didn't pull this off in anything like the way Tom Cruise shattered expectations in 'Interview With A Vampire'. They made Achilles a total bad ass here- but harldy supernaturally protected from on high. I think they dropped the ball here.

Eric Baba was excellent and perfectly cast. Peter O'Toole was good. Brian Cox was perfect. Sean Bean was great. Orlando Bloom was good.

But still, I swear the thing had to have been 3 hours. And it was SOOOO by the numbers. If I see another semi-historical period war piece again where the hero dies in slo-mo with some sort of mewling 'enya' type shit in the background I am going to swear these types of films off forever.

Dunno if I can bring myself to this in a theater.
Russell Crowe was the shit in 'Gladiator', but when it comes to these kind of movies, all I can think of is Peter Graves in 'Airplane'.
'Do you like movies about gladiators?'
'Ever been in a Turkish prison?'
'Ever....hang around a gymnasium?'
Maybe I'll wait for the DVD or see it at teh cheapies.

I know this isn't what you asked for, but I do plan on seeing it on video with my one friend - An ancient Greek and Roman history major/scholar.

I want to see what they did wrong and right, if anything.
neobuyer, most of the comments you made seem to echo the sentiments made by many others who have seen the flick, so you're not alone in your comments.
lol @ the Enya remark.

Indeed it was and IMO if it took 3 2.5 hour long movies for the Lord of the Rings to be done correctly it would take 5 3 hour long movies for the Illiad and then another 3 3 hour long movies for the Odyssey.

Kinda. Ebert said that Homer should sue the producers of this movie, though.

I haven't seen it yet..
My friend Ron gives it a 9 out of 10 and he's not into these types of movies.(.A total Horror/Slasher flick fan).

He said it rocked.
...................................................

My brother in law however is a Gladiator/this type movie lover..He said he liked it better then Gladiator, as he relayed some of the better parts of the movie to me yesterday.

He HATES Brad Pitt with a passion, but said Brad Pitt did a great job in this movie and has a different respect for him now.

He gave the movie a ten..

Just save yourself some cash and don't go... the movie sucks, some good acting (thanks Peter O Toole), some bad and a very bad adaptation of a classic epic.

They should have called the movie "Brad Pitt in Achilles" and I would have been fine, this is so loosely adapted from the Iliad and Odyssey that it should not even be mentionned.

Waste of money, just rent it when it comes out.

I read the book in Classics 201 this past semester, plus I'm boycotting it simply for the extravagence. 200 million should never be spent to make a damned movie.

I'm at home, pissed off, just generally not on the computer anymore. Plus I'm working 41+ hours a week at two jobs. If someone can let Rot know I'm still trying to get around to the art for him if he still wants me to, if not he can go elsewhere.

i just got back and i thought it was pretty fucking good. take it for what it is, a 3 hour movie can seldom be epic.

1. previews led me to believe casting pitt was a huge mistake. the movie proved me wrong even though she shows off his fucking body for like 20 minutes total in the movie. all i kept hearing in my head was "self improvement is masturbation".

2. the achilles/hector duel was fucking spectacular. i couldnt remember seeing a better 1 on 1 on the big screen. i was thinking this as i was watching it, it hit me that hard.

3. some pitt lines could have been reshot as they sounded kinda corny.

4. some of the music seemed out of place. like when troy repells the first siege, some corny disney/victory music plays in the background that made me take notice.

i would definately see if you want. i just cant believe how fucking expensive matinee are now. $7.50? suck my cock. thats what i say next time.

Oh yeah!!!!!! I thought that was teh best part of the movie... It was so well-choreographed and made IMO that the whole scene is still in my mind!!!... The overall movie was okay for me... I think it's good.... I'll buy the DVD just for the sake of the Achelles/Hector fight... Sooo good!

The girl I went with really liked it... Prob'ly cuz Brad Pitt got naked too many times... Nudity is okay, but not too much...

8/10 for me.

Some dialogue was a bit forced. The battles were all great. They shortcutted alot of the story to condense it.

Brian Cox was great. This guy had no career 2 years ago now he is a high roller.
WTF?

Eric Bana stole the show for me though. Also Peter O'Toole

Oh, I gotta add... The score kinda sucks.... Whoever's idea to get rid of Gabriel Yared's original score and replaced instead of James Horner should be fired... I don't blame Horner entirely though... He only had one month to do the score... Here's the original score by Gabriel Yared: (http://www.gabrielyared.com/flashsite/index2.htm) --> go to NEWS then SCORE FOR TROY... Decide which one's better though...

And according to Homer's Iliad, Achilles and Patroclus are not cousins but best of friends (and most likely lovers)...

Agmemnon (the Greek king) did not kill Priam (Trojan king/Peter O'Toole)... Or so I've been told..

And Hector's cousin did not kill Agmemnon... Or so I've been told as well... :P

Anywayz, just wanna share that....

I've REALLY been looking forward to seeing this movie, and although I haven't yet, I will soon. I hope the score doesn't suck, because I'm listening to Gabriel yared's score right now (thanks for the link), and it's fucking powerful. I can't imagine anyonbe else's work being better. Wonder they axed it.

Someone said that Yared's score was "too old-fashioned"... Somewhere around those lines.... That it was like 1950's epics....

I thought it was acceptable summer entertainment.

Nothing spectacular, but fun enough. It kept my attention for almost 3 hours, even if that meant laughing. 2 stars, better than Van Helsing.

I like that they didn't have the gods -instead they tried, as much as possible, to make it how it would've happened had it ever happened. In reality you'd have people strongly influenced by the Gods (as some of them were, notably Priam), but you'd also have a whole lot of personal interest pretending to be based on the gods. I commend the desire to try and do that kind of story. To bad it was only a decent movie.

The CGI was spotty: some things (like Troy) looked nice, others (like the boats) looked terrible.

Yeah, the original score was rejected for being to old fashion. I thought the new one wasn't very good.

The Hulk was the best actor in the movie, even edging Peter O'Toole. Eric Bana can hold his own in these movies.

Orlando Bloom was actually pretty good at playing a naive whelp (Bloom does a good job playing a manly elf and an elfy man). Watching him get his ass handed to him was quite painful and fun at the same time.

Brad Pitt looked like he really put some effort into the role, but I kept thinking of Fight Club the whole time [see minor spoilers].

Brian Cox (Agamemnon) also did some fine acting, but he never really felt like he was in the right movie.

I thought Helen was gorgeous, and I don't think many people on the screen are all that attractive.

As a funny side note: the whole movie appeared to be the Blondes (Greece) vs. the Brunettes (Troy). You show me one Greek who's blonde? Heck, you show me one Greek who isn't covered in body hair! Why didn't Helen have a unibrow and light mustache? :D

MINOR SPOILERS:

- I was pretty sure Agamemnon didn't die in the Illiad, but it was certainly poetic justice to see him die in the movie.
- I loved how stupid it seemed, when Hector leads the counterattack the the armies are in full combat, how everybody stopped to watch Hector and who he thought was Achilles square off. It as one guy spotted the two of them (surrounded by hundreds of people killing each other) and yelled "hey, everybody stop -key plot point happening right here!" It must have spread down that line pretty fast because you heard nothing between the 100k people attacking each other in the pervious scene. As soon as Hector won and found out he'd killed someone else, they all agree to break up the bloody melee... as though it was some kind of playground fight or something. When I saw it I couldn't help but blurt out "sorry" "sorry" "sorry" "oh, was this your arm? sorry" as the two armies separated.
- When Brad (I would say Achilles, but I didn't ever think it wasn't Brad Pitt) was trying to seduce that priestess chick, he says something along the lines of "There's somthing you should know about me" -I was waiting for him to say "I am actually just the mental image of Ed Norton."
- Were they trying to make a sequel or something? "Hey kid, what's your name? Good, here's the sword of Troy, go take the remnants of our people and find a new city!"

I've been told that:

Priam himself was finally killed by Achilles' son, Neoptolemus, upon an altar of Zeus in the center of Troy.

After the sack of Troy, Agamemnon acquired Cassandra, the daughter of King Priam, as his concubine, and took her home with him to Greece.

Agamemnon had an unhappy homecoming. He was either blown off course and landed in the country of Aegisthos, or he came home to his own land to find Aegisthus waiting for him. In either case, Aegisthus had become the lover of Clytemnestra, and the two together murdered Agamemnon and Cassandra shortly after their arrival. Aegisthus and Clytemnestra then ruled Agamemnon's kingdom, but were eventually killed by Agamemnon's son, Orestes (or by Orestes and Electra in some accounts). The homecoming of Agamemnon and its aftermath were favorite subjects for Greek tragedy.

Yes, the famous classical playright, Aeschylus, wrote the "Death of Agamemnon".

As the NY Times put:

"One notable sequel, however, has been foreclosed, by a killing that is certainly merited but that will nonetheless be surprising to scholars. I won't spoil it, but if I were Aeschylus, I'd call my agent."

Why do I get the feeling that hollywood "punched up" the story, Pitt's Achilles lives, gets the bitch... and everybody sings and dances around the horse in the finale?

Then, Achilles comes back for " Troy 2 : Achilles vs The PC Natural Disaster because we don't like making people villains anymore..."

fuck, would hollywood come up with an interesting original concept lately?

Yknow, I used to DESPISE Pitt.. I mean HATE Brad with a passion. Legends of the Fall (which I've done a 180 on) and Interview with the Vampire (still SHIT) really started it.. but since he's done some quality and great roles, I've really started to like him.

Se7en
Fight Club
Snatch
12 Monkeys
Ocean's 11 (ok, not great.. but a good flick)
True Romance

All great roles, big and small.. he's got great range.
